I was watching some of that Pete Rock & DJ Premier tribute that 9th Wonder hosted the other week and when they getting ready to perform Devil's Pie by D'Angelo, Premo went on to say the beat was originally for Canibus but Bis turned it down :|

Devil's Pie (instrumental)

In retrospect, D'Angelo's Devil's Pie is probably a million times better than anything Canibus could've rapped to that beat... but still why on earth would he turn it down and settle for all the wack beats he rhymes over.

word that, that's pretty wack of canibus. However........

Rip The Jacker had a lot of better beats than this.

Any hip-hop artists rap over Devil's Pie?

I think it would be an understatement if I answered this question

Hell ****ing yeah it is!

But honestly I don't think you'd like it because there are a lot of slow joints.....but honestly, between it, and Brown Sugar, I'm still never able to decide which one is my favorite album of all-time. Most recently, it's been Voodoo though. The production is before it's time, and still there is not ONE album that has successfully mimicked the production of the album. Lyrically, D'Angelo is in his prime, and vocally D'Angelo's humble mumble flow is perfect for the production, and style of the album. For the rap fan in you, there's a song featuring Redman and Method Man :)

People need to forget about that video. D'Angelo is more than just a pretty face

In fact, because women looked at him as a sex icon, and not a musician he went into depression, and hasn't made an album in nine years. Terrible. I hope he drops an album while being fat.

Man, I just went back and listened to this album again. This is my favorite album of all-time. "Brown Sugar" is just so juvenile in comparison. D'Angelo is a genius. R&B Jesus. Christ, I'm only on "Playa, Playa" but there's a reason why I have 3,000 plays of D'Angelo based on two albums of actual material (though to be fair, I have a few miscallaneous songs, live albums, outtake albums, and a mixtape from D.)

Just got to track two, and D'Angelo just makes this "Devil's Pie" beat. Premo did a great beat, but D'Angelo's vocals are perfect in every way imaginable. I could never imagine anyone else on this...hell, when I was listening to the instrumentals, I was humming D'Angelo's opening vocals. The beat feels so bare without him--it's as if Premo made the beat specifically for D'Angelo

The main ingredients to this dish,
Goes like this, here's a list,
Materialistic, greed and lust,
Jealousy, envious

Man, D rips this beat to shreds.

That song is so sick...I could see other artists ripping it up and I'm surprised I haven't seen any artist try it but D'Angelo kills it.

I honestly don't think I will. I've felt this way since the summer, just haven't had the heart to make the switch. Back in February I had "Voodoo" as my 8th favorite album, but it's really gone up in my book over the past couple of months. The album just continues to grow on me, even to this day.

really though, what needs to be done in canibus' next album is: Some ill producer (black milk, premo,...etc), takes all his accapellas, and makes the beats over them...just like what stoupe did with Rip The Jacker. Thats the only way he'll release a classic

Exactly. Gotta admit, Bus is a pretty wack beat chooser. But, when others choose the beats for him... damn. classic ish.

Oh man. I remember.

I still listen to Rip The Jacker so much, its my favorite rap album man, its just amazing how silly some of his other music is in comparison.

He needs Stoupe back, does anyone know why he cut ties with him?Â
