MC reveals that he hasn't written down lyrics since his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt.

By Jayson Rodriguez

NEW YORK - Jay-Z, whose "Rain Man" recording process finds him mumbling words to himself in the studio before stepping into the booth to spit out a complete song, definitely has the corner locked when it comes to rappers composing full songs in their heads. Young tikes like Chris Brown and Sean Kingston even cite Hov as an inspiration for their own songwriting processes.

"I've inspired a generation of bad writers," Jay joked to MTV News last week.

But the Def Jam president and iconic rapper obviously wrote down lyrics at one point in time. In fact, he revealed the last time he actually did so was for "Can I Live," a standout track on his 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt.

"What happened was, I was doing that song with someone else, and they heard the first verse and they was like, 'Man, you take that song. Finish it, 'cause it sounds like you got a lot more to say,' " Jay explained in a lengthy interview in which he discussed lyrics and songwriting. "You know, that type of thing. So I just wanted to get it down quick, I didn't want to keep going over it. It was like [the album] mastering time, so I just sat down in the booth and wrote that [verse]."

The verse contains multiple gems over the woozy, horn-laden production, like the lines: "I stepped it up another level, meditated like a Buddhist/ Recruited lieutenants with ludicrous dreams of getting cream/ Let's do this, it gets te-di-ous/ So I keep one eye open like, C-B-S, you see me stressed, right?"

According to Irv Gotti, who produced the track, the song was supposed to be a collaboration between Jay and a member of the rap group Original Flavor. Gotti mentioned he believed Nas was also set to appear on the track, too. But after the OF member passed on the guest appearance, Jay got to work finishing the song.

"From what I remember, he actually didn't write the full verse," Gotti wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. "But since the verse was so long, he wrote a few words down, and that made him remember the whole verse."

Although Jay has since long given up writing down lyrics himself, his advice for one of his nephews, who's an aspiring MC in his own right, is to write as much as possible. Repetition is the key to perfection, according to Jay.

"Why I tell him to write every day is because iit's like anything else: [You have to] practice," he said. "Basketball players play basketball their whole life, they practice every day. It only makes sense. You can only get better. The repetition. The more you do it you can only get better."

Jay has long since removed himself from the writing process, however he admitted the notion of actually penning lyrics does still appeal to him. So much so that he wanted to write down lyrics for The Black Album, which he believed was going to be his last album. But he couldn't shake the process that he's made so famous.

"It just felt better [the way I do it now]," Jay said. "In my mind, I wanted to sit down and write and do this thing a certain way. But your natural process is your process. It's difficult to go back to what you were doing when you were 15 or 16, but my process is different [now]. It sounds great on paper, 'I'm gonna sit down and write this entire album like I did before.' But once you get back in the studio and you been doing this process for years and years, it just felt natural to do it the way I been doing it. No paper, no pen, just listen to the music and do it."

Jay-Z hasn't influenced anyone. Who can seriously like this piece of trash. His wack rapping is only saved by the great beats he gets. After Reasonable Doubt he fell off hard.

Eminem's acceptance speech for best rap album (The Eminem Show):

"I made me a little list of MCs that I wanted to name off that inspired me to, to bring me where I am today - cause honestly, I wouldn't be here without them. So the list goes like this, and it's not in this order, but the list is this: Run-D.M.C., the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Kool G. Rap, Masta Ace, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Dr. Dre, all of N.W.A., KRS-One, Treach from Naughty by Nature, Nas, 2Pac, Biggie, Jay-Z. Thank you, 'cause I learned from all of you. Thank you."

^^^ that

I disagree with the great beats except for Reasonable Doubt and a few Preem joints. Atleast he admits he's bad. His lyrics have dumbed down to the level of retardation. If he still has it in him hopefully he can do an album with the skills he had Reasonable Doubt and before. He had one of the sickest deliveries before RD

Sorry I misunderstood the topic, Eminem does fall under the category, Eminem is weak, he doesn't bring anything to the game. Eminem is a moron, which isn't unexpected, because in his quote he just lists off a bunch of artists who made a good album. If Rakim, KRs-One, or Biggie had any influence on him, he might have an ounce of talent. If someone were to influence you, you might require some attributes of them, Eminem doesn't.

I think what he meant was that these new writers are trying to be like him and not write their lyrics down. Could it be that or am I just reaching...

Either way, RD>>>>>>>>>>>>95% of albums in history

You've got to be kidding me right? Eminem is one of the greatest rappers of all time. Don't knock him because he's white, the dude's got serious skills. He's got that rare "tupac" voice. The type of voice that says "LISTEN TO ME, I GOT SOMETHIN TO SAY". And his lyrics are off the charts as well.

Honestly, I'm not surprised by this. Jay-z isfake and I've been sayin this since forever. Reasonable doubt was alright, Im not gonna knock dat album. But I think he's overrated. And stop saying he's a business, because he's not. He's just a **** wit money that's buyin a whole bunch of stuff. Hell, this guy is trying to move the Nets from New Jersey to BROOKLYN. BROOKLYN!! Yeah, that's a great business man alright......

Yes, Eminem has alot to say:roll:. The only Eminem I like is the one from the Bad Meets Evil days. After that he just went for pure shock value. Jay-Z RUNS the rap game now. Wtf does his business skills have to do with anything? Go listen to RD, Blueprint and the Black Album and tell me if he's overrated. Man, you must be very overrated to be in the game for more then a decade.

Jay-Z is more overrated than 50 cent, he makes one classic album, and then consistently puts out boring rap, from than on.

Theres no way Jay Z is more overrated than 50.

Jay Z at least had a c.lassic album, plus a few more good ones (Blueprint, Black Album). 50 at his best (Get Rich or Die Trying) was decent, above average maybe. Andone of thereasons that album was so good was because of the beats anyway. After that, Massacre and Curtis have both been mediocre besides maybe a few songs (Curtis 187, for example is okay).

And btw Eminem isn't too bad. Well he may be now, but Slim Shady LP is a really good album imo.

The problem is he got full of himself, it wasn't enough to just rap anymore, he was suddenly a mastermind producer. (His beats are all trash anyway) Also wtf was up with those *funny* songs he put out? Eminem is overrated as ****. El-P>>>> Eminem

yeah, dude should have left the boards alone...and those funny songs on Encore were trash (the ones on SSLP were dope though)....*sigh* Eminem's fall off is probably one of the worse things to happen to rap...dude went from outshining Jay-Z on a track to being outshined by TI  good lord...

Eminems wordplay was super sick on his prime....the bad thing is that his voiced changed after The Eminem Show and it just became annoying. Many rappers fell hard too, not only him...I don't see another "superstar" rising on the rap game anymore..

Thank you."

Right,:|

Sorry I misunderstood the topic, Eminem does fall under the category, Eminem is weak, he doesn't bring anything to the game. Eminem is a moron, which isn't unexpected, because in his quote he just lists off a bunch of artists who made a good album. If Rakim, KRs-One, or Biggie had any influence on him, he might have an ounce of talent. If someone were to influence you, you might require some attributes of them, Eminem doesn't.

I don't even think Stan would say all of that :|

Jay-Z is more overrated than 50 cent, he makes onec.lassic album, and then consistently puts out boring rap, from than on.Demonic_Jin

Well he may be now, but Slim Shady LP is a really good album imo.

blueprint and the black album are both boring

even reasonable doubt gets boring after 22 two's. GRODT at least moves. Jay-Z and 50 seem quite similar. So Eminem isn't too bad? Other than the last 10 years, I guess :|

You guys really like to take things to the extremes. You're talking about two of the biggest figures in hip hop ever. Maybe they're not the best of all time, but every hip hop an appreciate or acknowledge the talent of Jay-Z or Eminem. They both have some great songs. You guys take this stuff too seriously, to the point where it seems like you are actually pissed off when someone mentions Jay-Z or Eminem. Stop spending all your energy on hating rappers and enjoy the music.

He had an EP, a group album where he dropped a lot of material, a mixtape where he dropped a decent amount of verses, a studio album, various freestyles, some random songs, and various guest appearences...dude has had ample opprotunity to drop some hot ish...only a few songs have been dope and none except the first two verses of No Apologies sounds like the Eminem that made people go nuts...

Yeah, Prodigy redeemed himself with that album/mixtape, that's why I say Em is the worse fall of in rap history, and Havoc was on to begin with? I was never a fan of his raps...

Well.. yea, Havoc was on during Hell On Earth. Either prodigy wrote his raps for that one, or some ungodly curse made them both fall off afterward. Now compare Havoc's solo album of this year to Prodigy's. On Hell on Earth Havoc managed to outshine P on a lot of songs.
