It's been nine years and the great debate over Jay-Z vs. Nas still isn't over. Earlier today (November 15), Hov appeared on Peter Rosenberg and Cipha Sounds's podcast, Juan Epstein, and during the interview, the Brooklyn legend said, despite popular opinion, that his 2001 diss record towards God's Son, "The Takeover" is better than Nasir's response track, "Ether."

"I think in the history when we look back, and I don't mean no disrespect to Nas, I think when we look back it's not even close," he shared, adding, "I just think it was a better record." [Listen here]

Jay and Nas exchanged in a lyrical battle back in 2001, which was arguably one of hip-hop's most exciting wars of all time. Although "The Takeover" wasn't part of the discussion, back in December of the same year, when New York radio personality Angie Martinez asked Hot 97 listeners what track they preferred, "Ether" or Jay's other diss record "Super Ugly," 58 percent of those who responded picked the Queenbridge MC's track.

Yeah the "beef" is squashed but its still a current debate till this day.

So Jay-Z likes his song more than a song that calls him a ****-riding ******. I'm not surprised.

I used to think 'Ether' was hands down better in every way. However, listening to it now, though it's still hard-hitting and some of the lines are ah-mazing, there are simply too many references to Jay's sexuality which isn't really backed up..  Overall, in terms of a diss, 'Ether' was more effective, but 'The Takover' is slightly relevant considering it focuses on the diminishing quality of Nas' music at the respective time.

But you need to remember that only a verse of the ' The Takeover' was aimed at Nas, whereas 'Ether' is a song entirely dedicated to Jay.. It's a bit of an unfair comparison, a better one would be 'The Blueprint 2'.

Word I always thought it was unfair to compare those two since the diss aimed at Nas was literally the ending of the song. Either way I always find myself listening to Takeover over Ether which shows which has the higher replay value.

Do you seriously ever find yourself wanting to listen to those songs cause I sure don't

Opposite case with a dope diss song that also bangs like Dollaz + Sense or something...

Yes, yes I do. Both hold up well. Nas brought more energy on Ether than almost his whole career combined and Jay-Z is deadly on Takeover. One of my favorite Kanye beats too.

Ditto, both songs are dope outside of just being diss records.

Takeover is the better track. Jay not only disses Nas and Mobb Deep...he puts on all of Roc-a-fella and actually backs it up which I think is cool. Ether is good...but you can actually bump Takeover.

Haha, even Jay knows it is a lie. Ether embarresed him enough to respound again.
