There is a lot of talk of classic albums, but those always tend to be chosen from 90s (or around there). Arguably, the 90s was when hip hop was at its greatest. It is rare nowadays to find albums that resonate the same way as these classics. I am curious to know what "recent" albums would say are classics or almost classics?

I would suggest:

Blue Scholars - Blue Scholars

Little Vic - Each Dawn I Die

Fashawn - Boy Meets World

Reks - Grey Hairs

Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor

Panacea - Ink is My Drink

Phi Life Cypher - Playback

I don't think this is a traditional classic, but it is pure lyricism. So I guess in my opinion a modern classic.

No one would post this as a classic so I doubt it will cause any harm.

Cunninlynguists definately are in the modern classics, APOS was a great album. Zion I's mind over matter is ten years old so I don't think it would be modern. If we go back that far, I think Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein should also be considered

Backpack rap just sounds like its stuck in the 90's (because it is).  Give that **** a rest already and do something original already... busy acting like its 1994 and Nas is the holy grail of rap.  Seriously... backpackers are some other ****.  They never actually buy the albums they say they "support" because that would be "supporting the evil record labels" and they diss everything else.

Blu is nothing like what you just indirectly described him as lol ^... ans BTH is an excellent album.

Anyway, I'd say CD, BTH, MAYBE Hell Hath No Fury, Stillmatic, Black Album, and MAYBE The Eminem Show (very big maybe lol...) are modern classics, and then others already listed like APOS...

***** - 5 stars

my thoughts exactly....though I'd have to add in the fact that they're more obsessed with sounding like the 90's, than just sounding like the 90's.

I find this hilarious in regards to Fashawn cause he just dropped a tape rapping over illmatic thus proving the point you was making lol.

Edit:

As far as modern ****cs go this is one that is up there for me, still bump this on a regular basis.

I personally don't agree with some of these selections. The Root's "Game Theory" could be considered a modern classic. Maybe Cormega's "Tha Realness"? maybe not. Dead Prez's "Let's Get Free", I think, would also be in contention.

Seriously. With the exception of only one or two other albums, literally every album posted in this thread that is actually a cIassic is posted by Rubbersoul.

I know. I still come back around to that album all the time ... it's a shame more people don't recognize how excellent it is. As you said, the amount of great music on that disc is just staggering. I wish whoever was running Koch would go back there, because it's amazing to think that label put out both "Serve & Collect" and "Defied" (and tons of other great music) in less than a year's time.
