I like some of his material like these...

Kid Cudi vs. Crookers - Day n Nite remix

Make Her Say

Down and Out

Kid Cudi - Spazzin' Freestyle

And some others I'm forgetting...

He's alright but nothing special

Anyways, Cudi's album has some of the best production of any major label release this year; a shame it's wasted on such terrible rapping.

okay, at least we agree on the production value of that record...best production of the year by far i know it's not a traditional hip-hop flow, but do you not thing his flow sounds good and blends perfectly with the production on songs like "hyerr" or "cudi zone"? it's like a bone thugs-type flow using more melodies

That was kind of my point - look at how rap albums are selling these days - I don't think they do.

They don't know good music and they certainly don't seem to have an idea what sells. Certainly there's a point to be made that sales are down for all genres, but I don't think the reason they're down so much more for rap is that people suddenly stopped caring about the genre or anything. Execs just really suck at picking music people care about (look at 50 Cent trying to push albums with a single like "Baby By Me" for evidence).

And now more than ever is when the industry needs some good A&R's, because it's obvious that the industry realizes they need to develop new artists. The industry has spinned its wheels the past few years determining if it could stay afloat on established names alone, but it's obvious after this year that less than a half dozen (Jay, Eminem ... um, maybe Dre if he dropped something?) established artists really sell anymore. However, the efforts so far to develop new talent leave more questions than answers - namely, do these execs have any idea what they're doing? People like Asher Roth had tons of money put into promoting them, and utlimately, it's hard to say they made a big enough impact to even warrant a second major label album (honestly, I had to google the guy just to remember his name; he's that irrelevant already).

Yes, I got off on a bit of a rant here, but I suppose it all comes full circle when you take into account that this is a thread about Kid Cudi. He probably made one of the bigger dents of this year's new artists, but, by the same token, take into account the reaction his album drew. I'd say at least 50% of the feedback has been negative, and those people probably won't be coming back to buy his second album.

For the past few years, Koch has really been the label all the majors need to model themselves after. Most majors seem to be following this model:

TONS of promotion + mediocore (or worse) album = artist nobody is going to remember

whereas Koch's model has been more like:

Minimal promotion (often just word of mouth) + quality albums = an artist people will be loyal to

In an age where millions of dollars of promotion isn't going to bring you that much revenue anyways, promotion just seems like a waste. If you look at Koch's releases, debut albums like DJ Khaled's "Listennn" and Boss Hogg Outlawz "Serve and Collect" recieved pretty much no promotion, but were excellent albums, and the first week sales for their sequels were strong because pretty much everyone that bought their first albums was there to buy the follow-up.

Hmm ... people like to buy good music ... who would have known?

Well, by far the biggest problem I have with him is his terrible lyrics, but sometimes his flow can work and sometimes it's just downright annoying.

really? i gotta disagree with that. that 50 percent that your talking about is probably all hip-hop heads that were disappointed because it was kind of on a different level musically. generally speaking, all the reviews that i saw and people that i talked to (NOT in hip hop forums) really liked the album. its kinda like gnarls barkley...the odd couple was one of the best reviewed albums of the year when you're looking at it as just music...but if you visited hip-hop sites all day you probably got a totally different perspective of it because theres a lot of hip-hop heads that will hate on something that isn't "hip-hop enough". i'm not saying you're like this lol...but i just thought kid cudi's album was generally well recieved, and a lot less than 50% of the people who heard it hated it

Well, you have to take into account that the majority of the sales for Cudi's album probably came from said rap forumites. Granted, he did have a modest mainstream hit in "Day N Nite", but the album came out so long after that single dropped that it probably didn't factor into sales of the album that much.

I don't really factor in publication's reviews into an album's overall reception ... to me, they don't mean anything. Rolling Stone and Spin can talk all day about how great Kid Cudi's album is, but they aren't the ones buying it. It's the opinions of the people actually buying the albums that really determine anything, and that opinion seems to be leaning towards "not good".

Honestly the hate it's received has been way over the top. Pretty good overall, IMO. Most of the time his lyrics are terrible, though, I'll give you that.

Common

Cudi

Cudi was way better live than I was expecting and was really moving the crowd. Ton of energy.

Common was dope as most of you would expect but I would've like to have seen him perform more of his older songs. But like I said, it was dope nonetheless. Common also did a 3 minute freestyIe and had lines about Tim Tebow, Brandon Spikes, Urban Meyer, Carlos Dunlap's recent DUI (lol), the SEC Champ game tomorrow against Alabama, and he even mentioned University Avenue which is the street that borders the north part of campus. And his band was ownage. They had a part where they were playing some old hip-hop joints (kinda like how the Roots do at their shows) and they were playing stuff like Camp Lo's Luchini and Digable Planets' Cool Like Dat, and Common was covering stuff like Nuthin But A G Thang.

^Envy you got to go. I was trying get a ride to Gainsville from anyone but no luck. One of my buddies who did get to go didn't even know who Common was.

I thought it could get rained out cause it's been pouring all day here in Jacksonville.

It rained on and off for the whole concert and it was freezing cold. But it was definitely worth it.

edit: here's the freestyIe

He recycles a lot of these lines in other freestyIes I've seen, the "Barack Obama" one, "the breathe in breathe out," and "I see my man with the camera so I pose." But the Florida Gator lines were dope.

They had a part where they were playing some old hip-hop joints (kinda like how the Roots do at their shows) and they were playing stuff like Camp Lo's Luchini and Digable Planets' Cool Like Dat, and Common was covering stuff like Nuthin But A G Thang.

haha hell yeah man...sounds like we saw a very similar common show i saw him about 2 years ago on a college campus where he had the band with him (probably the same one) and they were dope. he also freestyled for a few minutes after everyone ran to the front of the stage and security stopped the show to tell everyone to go back to their chairs lol. common puts on an amazing show, it's so cool to hear him freestyle live

Well, I gave it another shot a while ago, and as an experiment in music, it's a decent one.  As a hip hop album.. I just have to be honest here and say it's a failure.

He's good at fruity loops and is endorsed by a major label, therefore people will buy his songs.
