Alright, I've been meaning to do this for a while, I think we're just gonna make this thread like a dumping list for local act's that you know and want people to hear more about, post them in this thread, youtube links, bio info, mixtape links, whatever you have on them here in this thread...if this thread gets enough posts we'll probably sticky this thread

I guess I'm just gonna start by listing some of the rappers/producers out here in Toronto that you should atleast hear once...

Rich Kidd

Rapper/Producer on the come up, producing for artists from Drake to K-Os to Billy Danze (M.O.P.) and Busta Rhymes, and with his 4th installment of his mixtape series 'We On Some Rich Kidd ****,' featuring him both on the beats and rhymes, he's not slowing down anytime soon..

Drake ft. Saukrates - The Search (prod. Rich Kidd)
Rich Kidd - Take It Slow (prod. Rich Kidd)
Blake Carrington ft. Rich Kidd - Everybody's Watching (prod. Rich Kidd)
K-Os - I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman (prod. Rich Kidd)

Tona

Tona ft. Ayah - Street of Dreams (prod. Rich Kidd)
Tona ft. Tenisha - Major
Tona ft. Lokz & Rich Kidd - I Got U (prod. Rich Kidd)
Tona ft. Promise - Got Milk (prod. Black Milk)

I'll put up more soon, keep the posts coming guys, even if it's your own music, who cares!

Well since I'm from northern NJ and it's all so close I consider many places local.

Mu Dills (Newark)

Snipe-Won (Jersey City)

GDP (West Orange)

Guttah State Records (multiple artists who also go solo) (Morristown)

Tray Pound (song features Pito, another local and he goes first. Tray is the big white dude) (Ringwood/Paterson)

Guttah State I'd say is the most local, since I'm from Morristown.

I'm from Houston, so it isn't hard to support local artist. But some of the lesser known one I support are K-Rino, The Niceguys, cARTer, Yung Chop, DJ Chose, Jayton, ABN

Asamov
--- Their debut album And Now is one of the best albums of 2005. The production is top notch and handled by Willie Evans Jr. and Therapy (aka Paten Locke). Willie Evans, Therapy, J Wonda and Basic all rap and the rhymes for the most part are playful mixed with braggadocio. The only song about a serious subject is "Bad News." Like I mentioned earlier in the WAYLT thread, I doubt another Asamov album is coming out because it has been so long, but Willie Evans Jr. and Therapy have both put out solo joints in the time since. Listen to Standing Room Only (feat. J-Live, Wordsworth & Cassidy), Past Futures, Boombox, Hookslide.

willieevansjrwillie.jpg

Willie Evans Jr.
--- Rapper/Producer/DJ from Asamov. Put out an underrated album a few years ago called Communication and notably produced the a couple songs on the Perceptionists' Black Dialogue album (Black Dialogue, Love Letters, Breathe in the Sun). He also put out a Lif/Akrobatik/Perceptionists Remix project called the Black Mega Remixes that's really dope (Black Dialogue Remix, Looking In Remix, Medical Aid Remix). Easily one of my current fave producers in the game, and he can rhyme.

paten.jpg

Paten Locke
--- Rapper/Producer/DJ also from Asamov. Put out his debut album Super Ramen Rocketship last year, which was one of the better releases of the year. Also fully produced Dillon's album Studies in Hunger. Check out Ventilation and Brava.

288696478841bea1d7ef.jpg

The Smile Rays
--- Made up of rapper Paten Locke, singer Daisey, and producer Batsauce. Smile Rays are pretty relaxing, and this is basically like a side project for Paten. Check out A Toast.

toughjunkie.jpg

Tough Junkie
--- To describe him in one word: creative. His album Grab What You Can was one of the best releases of 2009. Gained some publicity in 2010 for producing the reunion song Birds of a Feather with Dres from Black Sheep, Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest, Dave from De La Soul and Mike Gee from the Jungle Brothers. Check out Feel Free and Even More Better.

76510067.jpg

Dillon
--- Formerly known as MC Intellekt (listen to On My Day Off), he put out album called Studies in Hunger last year which was entirely produced by Paten Locke. Dillon used to be a chef which is where the name of the album comes from. Check out Identify and Game's Been Good (guest appearance on Rip One's album Epitome).

I'm from the peninsula (bay area) but moved up to Oakland so I'll stick with peninsula rappers because there's too many Oakland rappers and peninsula rappers get no love lol

Lil L/ L Matik's a Tongan gangsta rapper from EPA.  He aint put out anything in a while but he still doin it... he's probably the best tongan rapper (and the best known).

 Here's two songs:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phPzjeO9mHk&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKrEYs_f6Jg&feature=related

King Cydal's a rapper from East Menlo Park, not to be mixed up with the 90's Oakland rapper Cydal.  He's mainly a hyphy artist but he's done other stuff.  He's best known for doing a show with The Jacka and Big Rich in Mountain View but he has the potential to put East Menlo on the map again.

Here's two songs from him, one of which has the same beat as Real Hood off of Gobots 2... this came out first though so... lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEPaYzm4QK0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ9JWRp2Ihc&feature=related

J-Dash is a rapper from North Fair Oaks (East Redwood City).  He's not very well known outside of RWC/East Menlo/EPA but he's got potential to be bigger... as far as I know he's only put out 3 songs so far.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gl63o4PxFvg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAgN8nDZJhk

^at 3:00 they're in the stambaugh bridge... brings back so many memories lol

V-Boy's a latino redwood city rapper.  I aint feelin his stuff like that but he reps Redwood.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KHOmbdtkQw&feature=channel

Babee Loonie's a tongan rapper from EBL (San Bruno).  Only seen one video from him but he seems decent.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_m8Xe1fLuo&feature=related

Other than them there was an EPA's finest tape that came out in 06... there were some bangers on there

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKwvE1W4NZo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-vUncwYAQw&feature=channel

Those are the newer rappers...most of yall heard of Dem Hoodstarz by now.

Sean T, Chunk, Totally Insane and Blackjack are 90's rappers from EPA/East Menlo... other than that I don't know who else is from the peninsula.  I could include San Jose (its 10 minutes away from the peninsula) but SJ's a whole other scene...

Its funny because there aint too many places like the bay where there's 6 or 7 scenes (Vallejo scene, Oakland scene, SF scene, Richmond scene, peninsula scene, SJ scene, Pittsburg scene) within a 50 mile radius.

Damn this is gonna be hard, well the only artist from my town that I know has any kind of affiliation with rap and minimal at that is some dude named DJ Ravi, link to one of his song. (unless you speak Norwegian you will not have any idea what they're saying).  he's  also the co-founder of a another group from my town a jazz band called Jaga Jazzist and we also have a producer that is blowning up on a national scale but I don't remember his name.

Here's some songs from the Jazz group if anybody's interested though.

Jaga Jazzist - Animal Chin

Jaga Jazzist - Airborne

i mean this should be stickied WAAAY before hip-hop clothes but

there is a lot of music out there. i only want the best. the best tends to float to the top. most these cats are prolly local for a reason and i value my time too much to check them out unless respected members rep them (like paul w/ asamov)

and if we do check em out and they're WACK then that says a lot about u considering they're from ur area

personally speaking pomona actually has a fair amount of talent. above the law is awesome!

I don't mind this thread being stickied in the meantime as long as people are contributing to it. If it slows down a ton or dies then it really does not need to be stickied.

This is a really good thread guys.

I guess the quality of your contributions to this thread can be severely limited depending on where you rep, and, coming from Wisconsin, about all I can contribute to this thread is Coo Coo Cal:

Depending on how old you are, you probably remember "My Projects" (which I still hear refrenced to this day; Tum Tum is on the opposite side of the country and he refrenced it on his album last year). This project came from that era where Tommy Boy realized they couldn't make a living releasing projects (lol) like De La Soul forever.

I did love that single back in the day, and not even just because it was a local artist. That said, I've never heard anything else from him, and while I wouldn't be against listening to any of his albums, I also can't see myself going out of my way to hear anything.

I'm sure Milwaukee actually has a decent scene these days, but I've never been inclined to follow it, since it's never really had it's own identity (then again, the Midwest never really does; we just repurpose other region's sounds). I've got some DJ's in Madison playing some of my beats, lol. Guess that's about the extent of my knowledge of my state's "scene".

a_ratchet_fan

That "Real Hood" beat doesn't have anything to do with King Cydal ... that's Big Tuck's single "Not a Stain On Me" from two or three years ago. Big Tuck is a Dallas rapper; him and Tum Tum were signed to Universal a couple years ago. "Not a Stain On Me" was a HUGE single a couple years ago; surprised you haven't heard it. You can tell it was the inspiration for "Real Hood"; Jacka even shouts him out on the beginning of the track. I'm sure Cydal was just freestyIing over the beat; there have been a million freestyIes over that track. Never liked any of them as much as the original, though.

Anyways, any quick San Jose recommendations? I've been meaning to get into SJ rap for a minute now; just too many Oakland/SF albums out there to buy, lol.

Ty - Don't Call Me

Ty - Motown Love

T Murda - Ignorant **** (freestyIe)

N1K3 - The Dungeon feat. Robby Guarantee

More **** from my hometown. Not bad considering my hometown rap scene is far from the biggest. More than some places I guess. Oh, and I no longer respect that Robby Guarantee dude, considering he just recently committed a murder with some other thugs smh.

To add onto this topic since quite a few of you already contributed some local artists to this thread, how did you all come across these local artists? Are they big in your hometown and do all your friends know about them? Internet? Radio?

All the artists I mentioned I actually found out about through the internet. When I first got my myspace page (don't worry it has long since been deleted) in 2004 I used the search feature in the Music section and found all the musicians in my area. I went through a bunch of them and came across Asamov, Dillon (then known as MC Intellekt) and Rob Roy after awhile. After messaging them all back and forth I found out that Dillion and Rob both went to my high school a few years before me, and Dillon also ended up going to UF and he is the one who first put me onto CYNE when I was asking him about GVille's music scene. The rest I kind of just stumbled upon on the internet as well.

The local acts in my area aren't too popular in my hometown. I mean sure, the people who follow the local scene will know Asamov, Swordz, Tough Junkie, etc. but in the scope of things, rarely anyone knows them. I don't really remember any local acts being on the radio, which is a shame because not only does my city have some talented artists, but fans most likely would gravitate towards them because they are from the same city. I can remember some of T-Pain's early songs with the Nappy Headz (from Tallahassee) being the on the radio but outside of that nothing.

Edit: Also recently heard that Supa Dave West is going to be remixing Dillon's entire album.

well with Rich Kidd, it was always me hearing about him through artists I work with in Toronto, some people comparing my work to his or talking about getting beats from him, so one day I just D/Led all of his tapes and I was blown away because he's making the type of beats I love making/listening to...It also turns out back in 06' he beat me in getting a spot on this dude's group mixtape, I only found out recently it was his remix that went ahead over mine haha, small world, and I think the Rich might be going over one of my beats in the next couple months/next year haha, so I'm really excited for that as well

As for Tona, I saw him preform with this guy Famous (might post him in this thread at a later time) at a Nas show a couple years back (I think the same show that got mine and Giangio's mugs in XXL Magazine lol) and I thought the dude was pretty dope, and since then he's never failed to impress me, really underrated in Tdot right now..

Basically I know these people either due to a friend I knew who was into rap, or the internet due to sites like ozhiphop.

Okay, I'm limiting myself to Melbourne rather than Australia, obviously.

Bily Bunks - Devil's Clay.

Probably the greatest Australian music video ever. Watch it. Anyway Billy Bunks is part of Booze Bastards and Hired Goons, and is somewhat of an underground legend. He's also a pretty damn good rapper. Don't sleep on Chopper!

Bias B ft. Lazy Grey and Bigfoot - Move On the Pavement.

That gets three out of the way in one go! Bias B was also quite involved in the graffiti boom in Melbourne back in the 80s.

Brad Strut - Beast on the Mic.

As underground as they come. Well i've heard of him, so maybe not. Whatever.

Pegz - What Would Happen.

Veteran, head of one of the largest rap labels in Australia etc.

Muph n Plutonic - Heaps Good.

Awesome video, and even if you dont' like Muph, Plutonic Lab is an awesome producer.

Tornts - Step Into my World.

Obviosuly thinks he's pretty hardcore! :P Part of Booze Bastards with BIlly Bunks I think.

Ivens - The Grudge.

Another good video, and more Plutonic Lab production. I'm not sure El-P would be too pleased if he heard the guy's styIe, though lol.

And last but not least:

Chopper Read!

"im just your average bloke who likes a bit of torture, law enforcer, smilin at your daughter"

Don't sleep!

For sure, but they're all from Sydney! Or in the case of M-Phazes originally Brisbane I think, though he currently resides in Melbourne.

That dude Ty I've posted from my hometown is up on iTunes with his single "My Sunshine." Big ups to him on that, not the best work from him at all, but the biggest I think the very small rap scene around here has gotten.

Beach Boy ft Glasses Malone - LA You Drive Me Crazy

if anyone listens to 93.6 here in LA you've probably heard this song by now. The original has my friends verse on it but they got Glasses Malone in the studio and recorded this version which actually sounds better then I thought it would be. Once this song hits the other radio stations it's probably going to get major play

I was digging for more hip-hop outta my hometown and this came up... Mineral Ink - You & Me

It's not bad, sounds as if it's on some nerdcore, intellectual type stuff. And it's interesting because if you payed any attention to my last posts, than you'll notice that not all rappers from here have the "hood" mentality. It really shows the interesting yet odd demographics of the place, as half of it is VERY rich and the other VERY poor.

Tyler's Wolf

"[He's] the creator of LA's Odd Future collective who are quickly becoming the teenage skate punk equivalent to Wu Tang and Tyler is their RZA," said Andrew "Noz" Nosnitsky of cbrap.com. "His [beats] are built from sloppy and squashed Neptunes synths and his raps are like a half speed amalgamation of MF Doom, early Eminem and Lil B."MTV

made it on the list of mtv.com's most anticipated albums of 2010

I live in Hunstsville....yes this, that, and this Hunstville...weve been taking some L's lately, now thats out of the way. There are tons of rappers but I'll just go over the ones that have more of a buzz.

G-Side:

A lot of people here already know about G-Side (matter of fact, yall put me on them, I've never heard of them until I saw a post about them here). The group is made up of 2 rappers, Yung Clova and ST 2 Lettaz. They got some internet buzz with their track Speed of Sound. They've been featured on some pretty big music websites and magazines. Their well-recieved debut album came out it 08. It was produced by a local production team called the Block Beataz (I'll get to them in a minute). A bunch of yall already heard it. They also had a free mixtape back in 09. Their sound is typical dirty south raps with a more slight electronic twist to it.

Some tracks:

Strictly Business

Swangin

So Wonderful

Block Beataz:

I'd describe Block Beataz as Huntsville's biggest hip-hop production group. I would love to see more non Bama rappers get on their beats. Its hard to describe them so I'll just steal a blurb from Pitchfork, "woozy, synth-based, bottom-heavy crawl that treats big-room trance the way OutKast and UGK records used to treat 70s soul.". Yeah....there you go.

tracks:

Rollin

Only instrumental I could find on youtube but some of the tracks for the other artists I posted were produced by them. (see all the G-Side tracks I posted, and Whos hood under yelawolf)

Yelawolf:

Probably has the most buzz out of all the artists I've posted. He's not that local (Gadsden Alabama but screw it he's close enough) He recently got signed to Interscope Records. His first big mainstream break was when he was featured on Juelz Santana's Mixin Up The Medicine. He was recently featured on Big Boi's You Aint No DJ. He had a free mixtape earlier this year titled Trunk Muzik (It is free but only links I can find to it are share sites, I don't want mods trippin, Google it if you want it. He raps like a midwested dude mixed with a southern accent with a little bit of country influence.

tracks:

I Wish feat Raekwon

Trunk Muzik

Deer Mama

Who's Hood (G-Sides track but Yela has first verse)

Paper Route Gangstaz:

Got some intenet buzz after they released their Fear and Loathing In Huntsvegas mixtape (the name "Hunts Vegas" is funny to me, gambling is highly frowned upon in conservative Alabama but I digress). They've had some tracks after that make some splashes on some big hip-hop blogs and sites. Typical southern rap group. Block Beataz has also made beats for them too.

tracks:

Keyshia Cole

Bama Gettin Money (lol @ Final Fantasy sample)

Woodgrain

Naturalz Pt 2

since you're a G-Side fan too i'd thought I'd share this with you

"Going into next few months we are close to dropping the one. We have been releasing artwork or you may have seen 1.1.11 floating around the internet. This to me is the album that the industry past over all those years when they knew who we were and where we were. This is the album that your favorite rapper when approached to work with the Block Beattaz will feel like complete asses for not copping a track when we shopped it to them for the low. This might be the album that shakes the Earth at its core and sets the days of last into reverse back to day One. 1.1.11 "

can't wait  :D

I dunno mayne, Block Beataz are talented (though not as talented as their reputation has it), but Alabama just does not have a whole lot of great rappers. G Mane is probably the best I've heard, and he is, for all intents and purposes, a Bun B wannabe (but hey, with Bun slacking these days, I won't hate on that).

I just have a hard time seeing that scene blow up, partially because they're modeling it so much after the way Texas rose to prominence, but I can't see anyone from Bama's scene that people can latch on to the way Texas had, say, UGK and Scarface. Plus, they have some REALLY big d-bags, like Yelawolf and Jackie Chain.

Don't know what genre I'd cIassify this as (sounds like something from Stankonia though lol) but Rob Roy released a new video... "Carmencita". I know a lot of people don't like his music but this and "Fur In My Cap" videos have been dope.Â
