I know, i know. There have been discussions on this before. But not recently. A ton have people have joined OTB since the last discussion of this (which i think was in one of those MTV threads on the GOAT mc or whatever), and I would really like to hear what they think is the GOAT album. ****, I don't even know what some of the older members consider to be the GOAT album. And this could spark some good discussions/debates/whatever the hell we have here on OTB :P, which we have been lacking recently.

In my number 1 spot there is a tie between Liquid Swords and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. In my number 2 spot there is a tie between Illmatic and The Blueprint.

Illmatic - http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:gifwxqwhldhe

The Blueprint - http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:wxfrxq80ldde

Liquid Swords - http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jpfpxqyhldse

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:gbfexqwjldfe

What is the GOAT album to you guys? And link us to some information on the album if you post, if possible. And don't post albums that are the greatest lyrically, or production wise. I mean GOAT. Not the greatest in one area. The greatest album overall. Like, Illmatic owns TMOLH lyrically, but TMOLH is greater because it beats Illmatic in every other way, IMO.

Oh and GOAT = Greatest of all time, for you who don't know :).

Since when does how praised something is decide how good it is? It is an amazing album, one of the greatest. But your reason as to why it is, is a bit iffy :?.

Well Ready to Die matched the praise of Illmatic, and even bested it in some places (check Rollingstone's top 500 albums of all-time for example). And unlike Illmatic, Ready to Die had major commerical success to boot while it took Illmatic 10 years to go platinum, which makes it even more impressive. Not my reasoning for why Ready to Die is the G.O.A.T., but just saying if you're going to go by the voice of popular opinion...

We are not considering sales, because if so then might as well add Get Rich or Die Tryin to the mix. This is taking into consideration opinions from individuals who KNOW hip-hop. Just peep the various related hip-hop articles published or the ones posted on the net, and most will point to Illmatic being the best. I mean, just look at THIS thread...Illmatic is the leading candidate thus far.

What hip-hop sources? The Source? Both got 5 mics. XXL? Both got XXL's.

Ready to Die and Illmatic are basically neck to neck in critical acclaim anywhere. The only difference is that Ready to Die sold waaaaaay more, which makes Ready to Die more impressive than Illmatic because it backed up the critical acclaim with the ability to appeal to the people.

You'd have a point with Get Rich or Die Tryin if that album actually had critical acclaim, too bad it doesn't. I'm not only talking about sales, I'm taking about matching the critical acclaim with sales. That's hard to do in hip-hop. You can have albums like Hell Hath No Fury that are media darlings and have a lot of critical appeal, but can't sell anything. You can have albums like Please Don't Hurt Em Hammer that don't have any critical appeal, but go diamond selling 10 million. But only a select few albums can match the critical appeal with sales, and Ready to Die is one of them, while Illmatic isn't. It's as simple as that.

It's just one of those albums that's aged really well. "Illmatic" is great, but it doesn't have the lasting effect I'd want of my favorite hip hop album..."Ready To Die" is awesome, but idk....for me, it's just missing something...36 Chambers is dope, and has the lasting effect, but there are certain songs I don't care to listen to.

MOTU has proven to continue to be ridiculously dope to listen to over the years. It's aged really well on me, and everytime i hear it, it still feels, and sounds as good as the first time...sometimes even better. Both emcee's don't miss a beat lyrically, and while people credit the poor production, I don't find any problem with it. Outside of "Wolfman Jack" every song is certified dopeness....every beat fits the mood of the lyrics, and while no beat on the album is super complex, or amazing by any sense, they set the tone for the album, making them occasionally a highlight of the album. Some albums suffer from overproduction, or having a beat that doesn't fit the voice of the emcee....every beat on this album, while simplistic, sounds perfect for each emcee.

Technically it's not the best hip hop album, but it's my favorite

lol, I'm about the smallest backpacker here. Backpack albums have awful beats, and lyricists that think they're much better than they actually are. Binary Star is far better than they think they are, and their beats are pretty dope if you ask me :P

I think I might've been the one to introduce you to that album:oops: I remember when One Be Lo had that album up on his subterraneous records website for a free download like 5 years ago, and I posted it in OTB and no one had heard it before and it was still pretty unknown by a lot of people on the net... now everyone and their momma on the net knows that record.

You were, and I love you for it ;) I think you introduced it to me maybe 3 or 4 years ago...I still listen to it, and love it everytime I hear it. It's like listening to D'Angelo's "Brown Sugar" for me...never, ever gets old, always sounds ridiculously dope.

I still think hip hop has the potential to produce an album that surpasses MOTU as my favorite. There is so much One Be Lo, and Senim Silla could improve on, on that album, and within all 18 tracks or so, none would probably make my top 20 favorite hip hop joints.....still, it's such a sick album, definitely my favorite.

Black Star album >>> BOBS >>> Train of Thought

Black Star album is lyrically epic, beats are sound too, mostly nothing to fancy, just simple and clean. One of my top 5 no doubt.

Man seriously I'm gonna go with Illmatic as well. Everytime I want 100% guaranteed Hip-Hop satisfaction I put it on. Check my Illmatic blog post, I updated it with a paragraph comparing it to Ready To Die. :D
