1 Language conquer = disaster

I don't know about you, but every language give us a destinctive knowledge, each one teaches us different ways, some or easy, some are hard.

Earth being in 1 language is not worth it.

There is always a reason why we have different languages, is to become different, if we are think the same, we would do the same. If the world is the same we would have a horrible life, and nothing would be fun. Don't let 1 language to conquer, The more language we have the harder we would be conquered. But too much can be in the way. Keep the ones you have or be the same.

I think I see what your getting at but I'm not sure where I stand. One one side have one global standard language (ie English) would make a lot of things easier for business, travel, and general human interaction. Being an English speaking individual I find it comforting that I can go to any major country and it's only a matter of time till I find someone that speaks my language if I need help. If your in Europe chances are somebody working where you are shopping knows at least enough English to help you find something. It's great and I can't imagine how life is for people that don't have that going for them. On the other hand the loss of all the other beautiful world languages would be a blow to the diversity and wonder of the human race. I speak a bit of German because I think the language is beautiful. I have a nice assortment of foreign music because I like the sound of French, Russian, and Japanese. If these cultures were forced to adopt English as their primary language I think that some part of their unique culture would be lost.

So I don't really know which is really the better deal; one language or many?

Again I see what your trying to say but now that's just crazy talk. If alien life were to come to Earth I would think that whatever means of communication they would use would be nothing like any language humans use. Probably because real aliens likely don't have two legs, two arms, and a face with two eyes, a nose and mouth. Imagine a language that consists of high frequency tones produced by running air through two different windpipes at different rates. Or what sounds a mouth could make if it had different bone structure around it and a tongue that was split in four seperate controllable sections. But I'm getting off topic. I'm going to maintain my position of seeing both sides. Yes, the death of any language is a bad thing but so is a planet full of people that can't communicate.

Well, one thing going for English as a global language is that it's not just Americans and the British that speak it. You can go to any city, I'd go so far as to almost any major store, anywhere in Europe and chances are there is somebody that knows some English. This is because English is taught to kids around the world. So is Chinese but not nearly on the same scale. India and China may have much larger populations but a large percentage of their populations speak some kind of broken English.

The only reason that is the case is because of our economic ties.. When the United States finally gets dethroned as the super power by either China or India, or another unforseeable country.. English will most likely not be the most desired secondary language..

I have an idea what if we made it so that there is one universal language that way everyone can still talk to each other, but still keep our native language as well. Like how they teach kids to learn spanish at a very young age what if we learned our natural langauge and another language throughout school. Sounds like more work but were already doing it with spanish, and such and you won't lose all the other languages.

That's very true but even if the US goes into decline there has been almost a century of the world being focused on English. I think it's possible that instead of the Chinese learning German, French, any of the Indian languages they will just communicate to them via English if they can't use local translators. Easier to learn one language a lot of people already speak as a second language then to establish yours as that favorite second language. That said, if we have a century of China being in charge of the world via economic, military, and cultural influence then we'll all probably be speaking some broken Mandaran.

There are more people who speak English in the China than the number of people who speak English in the USA. Plus, in India, almost anyone who is planning on being anything more than a farmer learns English in school. My cousin in India is only 11 and has never been to the USA but the school still teaches her English and she can speek it well. English is pretty much recognized as the International overall language.

One language wouldn't do anything except bastardize culture. Is that a good trade-off for ease of communication? Who knows.

Now one currency, that would be disastrous.

Living in Belgium, I know just what it's like dealing with multiple languages. It's terrible. It divides people, causes mis-communication and takes an almost impossible amount of effort to know them all.

I'm within a few hundred kilometres of French, German and English (if you count across the ocean) and speak Dutch.

The US is an example of how it should be - a bunch of people speaking lots of different languages but still having tried to go towards one primary language. In my opinion, after WW2 they should've made Europe have one language much like the US.

Ease of communication will always override cultural heritage. With ease of communication can come greater tolerance. I'd rather see that in the world than a bunch of people starting wars with each other because they don't understand the other's language or beliefs.

The beauty of languages is you can learn more than one of them at a time.

There are three official languages: Dutch, French and German with Dutch and French being the primary two. There's no such thing as a Belgian language though there are some regional dialects on both Dutch and French.

i don't quite understand how sharing a common language would make the average person have a horrible, boring life. in fact, i can't see how anything would be less fun if everyone spoke the same language.

This is a very de-evolutionary line of thinking, I must say!

To be able to freely communicate with others is very important thing and if it is harmful to the culture, it is an acceptable price to pay.

There is always a reason why we have different languages, is to become different, if we are think the same, we would do the same.

What I've learned from this post = Everybody who speaks Spanish acts the exact same way as everybody else who speaks Spanish.

Thanks, dude.

I wouldn't say it's de-evolutionary to think like that at all. I recognized the pros and the genuine need for a global standard language in this day and age in the post you quoted. Unfortunately, like so many things, it's just not that simple. As someone that has spent time immersed in other cultures, married someone from another culture, and keeps in contact with several people from various cultures. I do think that the loss of a language would be a loss for the diversity of the human species. In places like Germany English is seen as "cool", everybody wants to speak it. Little shops and bars with English names are "in" in most places around the world. I believe that there is a fine line between establishing one global standard language and one global culture, if people are not careful they risk losing what makes them unique in favor of being like the English speaking countries. Look at Native populations throughout North America that are fighting to retain their language and their culture alive instead of being swallowed.

I believe that this is part of why so many people in Islamic countries hate the western world so much. They see their traditional values being replaced by those of a foregin culture. To resist and/or resent change is natural for people. For reasons beyond me what we call western society has a quality that people just slip into. One could argue that immigrants that become like us also influence our culture but from what I can tell all were interested in is their food.

Anyway, I wasn't saying that there shouldn't be a global language, I think it's the way forward for the human race. I just think it's something to be thought about carefully, realizing and taking into account the potential risks and sacrifices the rest of the worlds cultures would have to make and are making. It's easy to say it's an acceptable price to pay when nothing is changing for you. Imagine if it were your language and your traditions that were dieing in favor of globalization. Imagine a world where people didn't bother celebrating x-mas in favor of some Chinese holiday, imagine seeing your grandchildren not experiencing or being interested in cultural traditions that you hold dear. Imagine if radical Islam was the norm and you weren't allowed to treat your girlfriend as an equal, or if you had to accept an arranged marrage for your thirteen year old daughter. Would you still say that the world is a better place because we all speak the same language?

It's actually happening slowly in this world. English pretty much taking over since most people knows it, the problem with english is that their music doesn't sounds as great as other languages and it's very easy to be illusional. Imagine the whole world was english and everyone is talking about 50 cents and joining gangs (ruined world). Well I'm glad those type of rap are dieing since they have been affecting kids into be gangster (Kids tend to copy what ever they see).
