An 11-year-old boy in the US state of Tennessee has been held on suspicion of shooting dead an eight-year-old girl in a row over a puppy.

The boy has been charged with first-degree murder as a juvenile.

According to police, he shot neighbour McKayla Dyer on Saturday evening after she refused to let him see her puppy.

The Gun Violence Archive, a not-for-profit organization that compiles data on gun violence in the US, says 559 children aged 11 or under have been killed or injured in the United States in gun violence so far this year.

Source.

If only she had a gun, all this could have been prevented.

I hope he didn't take too long to line up his shot. That could be construed as "staring", which could earn him a suspension from school! :-O

This, but at the same time they hadn't learned their kid that weapons shouldn't be used in an argument as well.-

Wow, unbelievable. How utterly terrible that an 11-year old would think that shooting someone is an appropriate reaction and that it would be so easy for him to do so. Also the fact that 559 children age 11 and under have been victims of gun violence in this year alone blows my mind.

Kid has issues.....maybe a sociopath in the making......parents are atrocious and should be charged as an accessory to the fact since they allowed a child access to a deadly weapon.

Regulate how?

Google Search: "Gun Laws in every other advanced country other than USA."

You'll find your answer there.

I'm more interested in how he wants them regulated, and if that would have helped in this situation

@lostrib: I'm not picky about how precisely, because the likelyhood of gun-related homocides going down in the USA with regulation is huge.

For the sake of debate, let's go with, say, Sweden's gun laws:

Gun ownership requires license and is regulated by the weapon law (Vapenlagen 1996:67)[120] further regulations are found in weapon decree (Vapenförordningen 1996:70)[121] and FAP 551-3 - RPSFS 2009:13 "Rikspolisstyrelsens föreskrifter och allmänna råd om vapenlagstiftningen".[122]

The weapons law doesn't apply to air guns and similar with a projectile energy less than 10 joules at the end of barrel.[123] These require no license and may be bought by any person over 18 years. Firearms manufactured before 1890 and not using gas-tight unit cartridges are exempt as well.[124]

The gun license is obtained from the police, and one must be in good standing and at least 18 years old, but exceptions regarding age can be made. To apply, one must either be a member in an approved shooting club for at least six months or pass a hunting examination (jägarexamen). The former is mostly used to legally acquire pistols for sport shooting and the latter for hunting rifles and shotguns. A gun registered for sport-shooting may not be used in hunting. You are allowed to hunt without passing a hunting exam if you are chaperoned by someone that has passed the exam. A person under 18 years may not own a firearm him- or herself, unless an exception have been made. A person with a gun license may legally under supervision lend his or her gun to a person at least 15 years and older.

A person may be granted license to own up to six hunting rifles, ten pistols or a mix of eight rifles and pistols. Owning more firearms than this requires a valid reason. Firearms must be stored in an approved gun safe.

There is no specific permit for carrying guns. For civilians it's illegal to carry a firearm unless there is a specific, legal, purpose (hunting, going to range, etc.). The general guideline, for transport of firearms, is that the gun must be hidden and transported in a safe (unloaded etc.) and secure way (under supervision etc.). The laws and recommendations in how to transport weapons is found in "Rikspolisstyrelsens föreskrifter och allmänna råd om vapenlagstiftningen" (FAP 551-3 - RPSFS 2009:13)[120] and Vapenförordningen 1996:70.[121] A concealed carry permit can be obtained under very special circumstances, such as a proven and very real threat to one's life. Carrying a firearm in public is, otherwise, limited to law enforcement and specially trained security officers.

Another reason for gun ownership is collecting. A collector must have a clearly stated demarcation of the interest of the collection. To be a valid interest of collection it must be possible to obtain a complete collection, for example - Pre-World War II British handguns -. A collector may start a second (or more) collection if he or she has collected for several years and shown a great interest in gun history. If the collection holds guns of criminal interest, such as pistols or submachine guns, the police may demand a very high safety level on the keeping of the guns (such as security windows and vault doors). Collectors may also require a time limited permit in order to be allowed to fire their collectibles.

So in accordance with Sweden's laws, this homocide possibly wouldn't have been prevented. Does this mean Sweden's gun regulation, or any for that matter, can be dismissed? No. Just because one homocide won't have been prevented, doesn't mean all the others won't either.

These laws restrict the motives for owning guns, the amount of guns you can own, and where you can have said guns. That's already miles better than in the USA.

Unbelievable... Another waste of life due to America's lack of any gun control. Sadly I don't think it will ever change until someone has the guts to stand up.

If the kid's intent was to kill the girl, I reckon the kid didn't need a gun to do it...

This might as well be a political Rorschach test...with people seeing things that aren't necessarily there.

While I'm for more gun control, this kid could have easily taken a steak knife and stuck her in the heart with it.

It looks like horrible parenting plays a part in this incident. I'm all for the sterilization of most of our population. Yes I'm an asshole. No I don't care about your cry-baby feelings.
