Looks like the studio is trying to make it look like Oscar bait when in reality it (hopefully) has more going for it.sammyjenkis898To be honest, I don't really blame them after Shame lol. That movie deserved to win as many Oscars as possible but yeah the final film should be intense stuff.
wutlol looks like another garbage anti white movie.. news flash: blacks sold their own people as slaves and white people have also been enslaved. get over it

...he has previously directed two films. And one of them was a TRUE STORY based on a WHITE Irish IRA member. So yeah, not casting that ONE other film with a black actor totally makes him a hypocrite...Â
It's a film directed by Steve McQueen so I shall watch it. But this time out he's using a screenplay by John Ridley (Red Tails) so I have some mild reservations.Â

As long as you enjoyed it, then that's really all that matters. But there's a great majority, including myself, that felt it was not a very good film at all and so I thought it worth mentioning.Â

If he really felt that strongly about it and had to preach it to other directors he would have cast the lead to the film that wasn't based on any previous source material to a minority actor.Â

Preach? That is laughable. A question was brought up about race and gender in filmmaking and he brought up the argument that directors not casting more non-white actors is more shocking to him then less non-white/female directors . Never did he say all lead actors should be black, and it is absolutely moronic to call him a hypocrite for casting the ONE lead role that ever could have been a black actor with a white actor. Especially when the character worked best as the stereotypical white upper class male businessman who everyone thinks is perfect.[QUOTE="DharmaMember77"][QUOTE="SaintLeonidas"]

Basically he shouldn't bitch about other filmmakers making white-centric films when he himself hasn't done anything to propel blacks, hispanics, and other races into the film world. Paul Feig was recently complaining about the lack of female centric films which makes sense since he actually directed two female driven movies.

Right yes, since he has only directed two films his opinion is clearly invalid and he should hold his tongue... Had no idea you had to have personally helped propel race and gender before you were allowed to speak out.[QUOTE="DharmaMember77"][QUOTE="SaintLeonidas"] Preach? Again, he has only previously made two films. Not to mention, he has actually only made one since saying these things and its a film about slavery with a black lead. So he is one for one since saying this, and one for three his entire career with one of those three not having a character who could have been casted as black. You seem oddly upset that an African American director took the chance, when asked about race in filmmaking, to make the incredibly true point that many possible non-white leads go to white actors. You claim he is a hypocrite because in his incredibly short career (two films) he didn't cast a black lead, which for some reason it seems like you think is the qualification required to be opinionated about race in filmmaking. Be a different story if this was David Fincher or someone with a long career and a lot of white leads, but I fail to see how anyone could possibly view McQueen as a hypocrite. SaintLeonidas
I know this probably won't win you over but...
Boyz n the Hood
Killer of Sheep
She's Gotta Have It
Friday
Menace 2 Society
etc.
These were all directorial debuts of black filmmakers and all of those films were black centered so using the excuse "he's only made two films" isn't really a solid arugment. My main problem with him was his condescending attitude towards other directors about not doing anything about the lack of nationalities in hollywood.

Watching this trailer again, it's hilarious how schmaltzy they tried to make it seem for dat Oscar bait. Saw it yesterday at TIFF and it's an incredible film that's really hard to watch but even harder to pull your eyes off the screen. The film itself is as far as Oscar bait as possible. Even if it ends up being the best film of the year (it's #1 for me as of now) I don't see it winning any major Oscars due to the intensity depicted. Some scenes can compare to The Passion of the Christ in terms of violence and intensity but they have actual impact to the story and are relatively few. Ejiofor's performance was definitely something special and I think Lupita Nyong'o deserves Best Supporting Actress for her performance as well. There was a particular scene in the first 15-20 minutes that gave me the sensation of wanting to get out of there but I couldn't look away despite that particular scene not being all that gruesome nor gory.
