And? Everything coming out of Hollywood these days is a remake. The movie is a remake of a film called "Half Slave Half Free" I have it on vhs. A true story of a free man kidnaped into slavery. He was a violinist from New York sent to play in Washinton and then kidnapped by slavers and sent down south.

[QUOTE="BossPerson"][QUOTE="Flubbbs"]wut Wow. White folk really get uneasy when you remind them of their history. And blacks seemingly hate it when you remind them that it was their fellow blacks that sold them into slavery to begin with. :roll:lol looks like another garbage anti white movie.. news flash: blacks sold their own people as slaves and white people have also been enslaved. get over it

Interesting way to justify slavery...
Did you forget that slavers also captured Africans along the coasts?
Pointing something odd out = justifying slavery Yep. Totally.Interesting way to justify slavery...

I've seen apologists here with similar motives, can't be too sure
This thread contains pretty much exactly the kinds of responses that I expected from OT. As for the film, all I have to say is that it looks fantastic, I haven't seen any of McQueens films yet but I need to get on that.
It's not a remake of anything. It's an adaptation on the autobiography of Solomon Northup called "Twelve Years A Slave".The movie is a remake of a film called "Half Slave Half Free" I have it on vhs. A true story of a free man kidnaped into slavery. He was a violinist from New York sent to play in Washinton and then kidnapped by slavers and sent down south.

This kind of criticism of film (and storytelling in general) is stupid when it comes from feminists, stupid when it comes from "pro-blacks" and stupid when it comes from "pro-whites". Portraying an individual in a story as something doesn't mean you're commenting on whatever group that character is a part of. The only people who level these kinds of critiques are people who have no idea just how it is that creative people actually create.[QUOTE="Flubbbs"]

Generalize much?[QUOTE="hartsickdiscipl"]This kind of criticism of film (and storytelling in general) is stupid when it comes from feminists, stupid when it comes from "pro-blacks" and stupid when it comes from "pro-whites". I dont see why people are complaining about this movie without having seen it. I havn't either by the way but I am speculating about it. They are saying it is some white guilt movie. You really think that a high quality movie with excellent writing would stoop so low as to try to make white people feel bad about themselves?
[QUOTE="Jagged3dge"]Pointing something odd out = justifying slavery Yep. Totally. Now that you mention it, what is the point of pointing that out exactly?Interesting way to justify slavery...

Because there are some people who are stupid enough to think that whites were the first people to enslave Africans. Now that you mention it, what is the point of pointing that out exactly?thebest31406Because the general belief is that whites took slaves from Africa when in reality it was African warlords selling their own people into slavery to the whites?

Yeah but how does that pertain to the film at all? It's just a random fact which has no baring on events that took place within the film.

Yeah. Can't have a thread involving race without all the usual stupidity.

...he has previously directed two films. And one of them was a TRUE STORY based on a WHITE Irish IRA member. So yeah, not casting that ONE other film with a black actor totally makes him a hypocrite...Â
Not to mention he obv created a professional bond w/ Fassbender
These dudes are gonna be like Depp and Burton except good

Indeed. And yeah, the guy only did two films so classifying him as a hypocrite is a bit unwarranted. In fact, in the case of Shame, McQueen cast Nicole Beharie, a Black woman, to play a significant role in the film. Please Log In to post.
