I agree that the law is flawed and I don't believe in slapping down a magic age that says "Okay, now you can legally have sex, but yesterday you couldn't". But these laws are set to protect the young crowd. Young teenagers are in the bloom of puberty and most will probably have sex at the first chance, no matter who it's with, and that's not good.
