15 year old boy will be facing life in prison for the slaughter of his family

The boy says that he abused him and gave him hell everyday. The 15 year old took his dad's pistol and killed his whole family while they were sleeping. Three younger siblings were killed, along with the mother, and of course dad. He's being charged as an adult and will be facing life in prison as the age of 15, juries reccomend the death penalty. Soo i don't get it..if he was having trouble with the dad why kill his whole family.
