To be honest the thing that surprised me most about this story is that the girl isn't Japanese. Seriously, as hard as I try to picture this girl in my head all I can imagine is a Japanese schoolgirl. I guess it's due to all those Japanese horror movies and anime I've seen :P

She told detectives she wanted to confess before she turned 18 and could be tried as an adult

I don't understand how that works. Why would the timing of the confession and/or trial matter? Shouldn't the age at the time of the alleged crime be the determining factor?

Or is this just her misunderstanding the law?
