[QUOTE="Laihendi"][QUOTE="dave123321"] Jim has said that mods won't let either of us just hijack hosting duties. We must be chooses by our peers. Have a feeling pirate will get it. I hope he implements my committee if he does.jimkabrhel

Your committee leaves the process vulnerable to corruption. Voters will vote for themselves which will result in there being no strongly supported candidates. Then there is nothing stopping the committee from nominating their favourites for each caption and putting them up against unpopular users with no chance of winning. This committee is a bad idea.

Corruption? This is an internet forum, and we're discussion yearly awards that mean nothing and should just be for fun. You are taking this way too seriously.

If you don't think this committee is a tool for corruption, then please answer this: why have a committee? Why allow self nominations if you are only going to accept a small number of them? The whole point of not allowing self nominations is to weed out people with no chance of winning. Why change that? What is the point?

What is the point of this whole thing? As I've already said, it's supposed to be fun, a laugh. You injected very little of it into the experience. Do committees work? Yes they do. Committee work is a large part of my job, and I've had to deal with a lot of different personalities and situation. Committee doesn't work all the time, but it's great for getting new ideas and for delegating responsibility.

You are dodging the question. I asked why we should have a committee, and your answer is a vague "committees work". What goal are you trying to accomplish by having a committee? I have already explained how Dave's plan will allow a small group of people arbitrary control over who gets nominated. You are ignoring that and supporting the committee without any specific reason for why we should have a committee.

And again, you are making it clear that you don't know much at all about the OTcars. I have done everything the previous hosts have done and more, and in a more timely manner than most. The OTcars is not a game - it is an awards ceremony. Please study the OTcars of previous years before you criticize my work as host again.

Lai, why do you want to host next year's so much? I mean, I get that you want someone with experience and all that (not that I agree), but you seem to be getting pretty worked up over this? What's it matter to you?

I am opposed to Dave being host because his plan to have a committee choose nominees is a very bad idea. I cannot support anyone for host who would favour such a plan, and I will do everything I can to stop that from happening. If that means I have to spend the next year campaigning to be host then I will.

Dave is buying his supporters by offering them spots on his committee. I think the people of OT are smart enough to know that what is best for a small exclusive committee is not what is best for the rest of us.

So, I think what Lai's saying is that Dave's plan looks like this. 1. Take over running the OTcars. 2. Change the format so that nominees are determined by a committee rather than by the community. 3. Offer people spots on the committee so that they'll support him taking over. 4. Once he has taken over, there will be a new elite ruling class. Presumably, the committee will nominate themselves for the awards and therefore sneakily win them all. Is that accurate?

I care about the OTcars. I put more hours than I can keep track of into the OTcars this year, and as 2014 host I intend to do the same next year. I respect the integrity of the nomination and voting process, and I trust the community to choose the candidates/winners that best represent what OT is. Dave does not.

dave1g.png

Dave's a nice guy and I like him, but this kind of elitism is not conducive to running the OTcars.

Calling Dave an elitist after gratutitiously patting yourself on the back for the job you did is just hipocrisy.

That's exactly what's happening. @ other Jim - This year's OTcars were a success, and I'm not ashamed of that. I'm proud of what we accomplished, and I intend next year to be even better. I have a 6 week plan to give us a smooth and timely OTcars. The 2013 OTcars were the fastest since 2008, but 2014 will be the fastest of all time if I am host.

It's not happening yet, since no one will be taking next year's OTcars until next year.

"if I am host"... those are the operative words. The community should have a say in how it's run.

What about the idea of nominations being done by a committee instead of directly by the community? Why do you feel that would be a better approach?

mhm. Lai seems too invested in this. Or at least taking it a bit too seriously with the corruption and values he sees in it. Though I guess that was to be expected given his speech.

Will allow for more nominations. A wider net. Dwindling participation among our users. Details will need to be worked out though. The committie will approve or disapprove of names generated by the community in the nomination round. How the nomination round will work is still to be determined. There will be a comittiee round after the nomination round. The hope is to allow for more people in the voting round.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Dave is offering positions to people to buy their support.

Also a committee will not result in more people being nominated, it only determines WHO gets nominated. The current system of adjusting the required nominations to become a candidate works perfectly to ensure a proper amount of competition in each caption. That system has been working since the OTcars were founded and there is no reason to throw it away.

I like Dave a lot, but what he is doing is wrong.

I say we skip the committee and hand the OTcars to dave.

Solves two problems at once.

New idea aside from the committie idea. My forum will serve as the basis of where we nominate and vote. Will implement a like button. There will be a board with topics for each category. Users will then submit their choice. The community as a whole can then like or dislike that choice. They can like or dislike as many names as they want, but can only submit one name. From there I will determine the cutoff numbers for how people qualify for the voting rounds. Discussion and stuff will remain here. The other stuff will be on the other forum since it requires a like/dislike button. In this fashion I think nominations will work out differently then they have in the past. Will allow for more and more varied choices. Voting in this way will also speed up the process of tallying since it doesn't require anyone to actually count. Will see if I can hide the count from users.

Once again, don't know why I am talking about this as if it happening anytime soon. Hope we get a mafia game approved.

*Sees Jimkabrhel's current signature.* O_O Now that is a masterpiece signature, I'd definitely nominate/vote for that if the OTCars hadn't already ended. :P
