2013 looks to be a great year when it comes to sci-fi flicks, and the movies listed in this thread are the ones I think will be the most prominent.

  • After Earth (M. Night Shyamalan, new scriptwriters, starring Will & Jaden Smith.)
  • Elysium (Neil Blomkamp, director of the excellent District 9; starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster)
  • Pacific Rim (Guillermo Del Torro, homage to classic Japanese monster/giant robot movies; starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba - and GlaDoS !)
  • Oblivion (Joseph Kosinski, with Tron Evolution being his only movie; starring Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko)
  • Gravity (Alfonso Cuaron, director of Children of Men; starring George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, Robert Downey Jr.)

IMO Elysium looks like it will be the best out of the ones listed, but only time will tell :)

EDIT: Restarted pool in order to add Gravity.

I'm assuming After Earth will be bad because Shyamalan movies always seem to be bad.

I was just thinking what a year it will be for sci-fi with the release of trailers for Oblivion, After Earth and Star Trek into Darkness in the last week. The last few years have seen more and more intelligent sci-fi in cinemas, with films like District 9, Avatar, Inception, Prometheus, Cloud Atlas and Looper as well as films like Star Trek, Dredd, Super 8 etc. Of course, we've had some absolute shockers (coughTransformers2/3cough) but that's to be expected.

Elysium is my pick so far, even though nothing has been seen. The cast and director/writer get me excited.

Pacific Rim is at the top of my list, just cause i'm a huge Kaiju fan, and have really liked a lot of Del Toro's work.

will likely see, Star Trek : Into Darkness, Elysium, Oblivion, and After Earth.

Gravity teaser trailer did absolutely nothing for me, i do'nt know anything nor am i excited. all i know is there is a space shuttle orbiting what looks like Earth. can't get too excited about that.

Elysium is the only one I look forward to. It has Neil Blomkamp at the helm, which is all I need to hear.

Pacific Rim could be cool. Guillermo Del Torrow is talented, and I'm a fan of Idris Elba. But, the potential to be complete and utter crap is high.

Gravity looks stupid, but I can't say much, seeing as how the only thing I've seen about it is a super lame-ass "teaser" that wasted my time.

After Earth could be interesting. I, however, am inclined to think that it will be crap because M. Night Shamwow has not made a decent movie in a long time.

Oblivion is fail becuse Tom Cruise.

It's like after Prometheus' huge success, Hollywood saw there was still a big market for blockbuster sci-fi flicks and green lit a bunch of them.

I mean how long has Niell Blomkamp been trying to make another movie? I'm personally looking forward to Elysium, because I like his down to earth, mockumentary take on sci-fi but Pacific Rim will probably be the most fun to watch in theaters.

ok. i just wanted to ask you then. what is Gravity about?

Sandra Bullock is an astronaut. Her shuttle is destroyed in orbit by space debris. She has to figure out how to get back to Earth. It's told in real-time. 80% CGI. A lot of long takes, including one 17 minutes continuous scene, and first-person shots.

The movie is rated and some effects houses delivered their completed scenes. It had test screenings 6 months ago. The studio either doesn't know what to do with it or they're saving it for the 2013 Oscar season.

The Elysium script reads like a Verhoeven movie except it's serious. I don't know how that one will end up.

Really? I watched the trailer for Pacific Rim and it looked boring to me. Like Americans trying to make a Gundam clone.

Del Toro is Mexican. And 'Gravity' only has director and cinematographer going for it. I'll need more than that to have more interested in a premise that could be a total mess and bore, over a film that no matter how bad is sure to entertain.

Del Toro might be Mexican but Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. are both American. :P

Anyway, you're probably right. I'm a little biased because I don't care for Del Toro all that much even if he looks like a hispanic Gabe Newell.

hard to pick which one looks most interesting, easier for me just to say what least interests me and that's Pacific Rim upon further reflection, I think it'll be a tossup between Gravity and Elysium for me, given I think both director's have great potential

After Earth: I don't like any of his movies, and ~"everything here evolved to kill humans", that's not how evolution works.
Elysium: Trailer is too vague
Pacific Rim: I don't like humanoid mechs. GLaDOS' name is Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, not what ever "GlaDoS" would be. And the voice seems horribly out of place for the movie.
Oblivion: Tom Cruise's ship looks like a penis
Gravity: Horrible trailer

I guess Elysium looks the most interesting :?

Baranga

Your synopsis is wrong.

"Science Fiction Thriller. Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone-tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth...and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space."

Sounds very interesting and I love that the director is continuing with the style he used in Children of Men.

I have to say that regardless of what I think about his movies, they're still making money. Nearly every single one has been an undeniable commercial success, which is why he continues to keep getting work long after people started calling him out as a hack. He most certainly shouldn't have quit after The Sixth Sense.

Damn I' ve been busy lately and just now found out about all these upcoming movies. Each of them has elements that would draw my attention but my choice would be Oblivion because Tom Cruise and sci-fi means immense awesomeness! I' ll need to see some more of Elysium to change my mind.
