Without a doubt the biggest sporting event in the world kicks off (pun intended) in... about 54 hours from now with the hosts Brazil facing Croatia in Sao Paulo. Who are you cheering for? Who do you think will win it?
I used to care so much and get all worked up for world cups and football in general. Not anymore though. In fact its been quite the time since I gave a **** about sports.
With that said, I hope Belgium and Algeria will at least go far in the competition.
Edit: I just found out that Belgium and Algeria are in the same group. Coincidence? I think not!

Belgium will advance unless they collapse horribly somehow. Now Algeria... no idea lol. Russia and South Korea are both stronger teams.
Why don't you care about sports anymore? For me it's one of the best distractions from the tedium of daily life.
I don't know about that, Algeria is not a football team to be taken lightly I think. They're not among the top echelon of football national teams granted, but they're good nevertheless.
I think my mind has become too occupied and my worries and concerns, struggles and battles have intensified over the years to such a point where I could no longer continue to care about sports and other trivialities. Having fun is not enough of a good reason for me to commit to something and invest in it, it needs to serve a higher purpose, a purpose that would be conducive to a better future.
@VaguelyTagged: I see you're still stuck in that phase of loathing and condemnation the prejudiced and unjust homeland. Make the transition bro, transcend beyond the physical and leave it behind.

you're right but i feed off of it. hatred is what keeps me alive. lol
Finally. The only sporting event worth caring about except for Champions League, Europa League and Euroleage.
I'm supporting Germany cause I'm German.
I will be surprised if Algeria even manages to get a draw.
The real question is: What is Israel's group?
Ohohoho you shouldn't be talking
But I don't have a state to begin with. In fact I don't have one because of the state that does not belong to any group
Burnnn :3
Yeah well you have a football team. And it sucks. SNAP!
And our football team is the best one among those with no states
"FIFA’s latest rankings released late last week showed Palestine up to 94th in the world, having moved up 71 places. That was on the back of four wins and one draw, which included victory over the Philippines in the final of the Asian Football Confederation’s Challenge Cup in the Maldives on May 30. The final was watched live by thousands in Ramallah and other Palestinian cities on giant screens set up in town squares and other public areas. Afterwards, the Palestinian Football Association president, General Jibril Rajoub, hailed the victory as “the best day ever in Palestine football history.” The victory will also see the Palestinians go to their first continental soccer tournament in January in Australia—if they can afford the costs of travelling there.
The Palestinian national soccer team is now at its highest-ever showing in the world rankings since it was officially recognized by FIFA in 1998, following the Oslo Accord with Israel and the formation of the Palestinian Authority. The team didn’t play a home match in the Palestinian territories for a further 10 years. Many players come from as far away as Chile and other parts of the Palestinian diaspora due to travel restrictions imposed by Israel on travel between itself and the West Bank and Gaza Strip."
Considering what we have been and are still subjected to by the state that has no group, I say we're doing quite good. Look we're going to our first continental football tournament but the team may not afford it lol
Palestine FA says official's Brazil trip blocked by Israel
Anyone feel like making a fantasy football league? I'm English and an England fan but we are not making it out of the group stages. I cant be supporting another team as that is not what we won WW2 for. So instead I am just going to support other players from all other teams.
I'm English So I will be supporting England, being realistic getting out of our group would be an achievement with Italy and Uruguay being very tough.
I expect Brazil to win it with the home advantage, and my dark horse outsider for a win is Portugal, if Ronaldo actually has a good World Cup Portugal could go all the way.
As devastating as Messi is, when both players are top of their game Ronaldo is a bigger threat, more raw pace, power and all round game, he scores and creates goals from every possible avenue.
The Economist put up two great articles in this week's issue related to FIFA (and football in general) and I'd say this one is worth a read. Just scratches the surface on how corrupt and mismanaged FIFA is.
I'm gonna be rooting for holland, but I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't even make it out of the 1st round.
It's my first world cup in the Netherlands....I'm even seeing orange when I close my eyes. The stores are orange, the supermarkets are orange, the house windows are orange, cars are orange and there are orange flags every-freaking-where....Holy overreaction batman >_< Is it like this every time?
@korvus Yes it's always like this, dutch people even go in groups to the host country and set up oranje camps and march through the streets blowing horns and wearing all orange.
@deeliman: sometimes I wonder how the Netherlands is a functioning developed state. It appears as if you guys are in a perpetual state of partying and celebration. I have no idea how you find time and energy to labor for you know, other things.

I'm being given orange world cup hamster figures every time I go shopping...

I guess meer Marokkanen after all :3
You have no idea....I'm used to Portugal, where everything opens at 6:30 in the morning and closes at 10/11 at night, monday to sunday....here things open between 9 and 10 am, close at 5pm, sometimes close for 2 hours at lunch time and don't even open at all on sundays and monday mornings, sometimes even closed on wednesday mornings too.
Half the time I want to go shopping somewhere it's closed. The minimum wager is also 3 times higher than in Portugal. Lots of time and money to party!
@GazaAli Well, we do have the least work hours per week of all European countries (probably of all developed countries, but i"m not 100% on that). So i guess my answer is that we don't work :P
@korvus You better get used to getting them during wc/euc, and ah isn't the only store who gives things like that when you shop there, pretty much every big supermarket chain does it :P

It's mind boggling really. I mean, where does all that money come from? How is the Dutch economy able to sustain such prosperity while allowing for all this laxity and labor privileges?
