[QUOTE="wstfld"][QUOTE="BMD004"] That is absolutely ******* stupid. I don't know any Republicans who would have wanted America to do bad in the Olympics. gtfo with that nonsense.BMD004
Not rooting against the teams, just Chicago's bid.

Same thing. I don't know of anybody who didn't want that.

I live near Chicago, and believe me public opinion here was almost split.
I know the guys on one local sports radio station were celebrating when we were knocked out....so even some people heavily into sports didn't want it.

I can see Russia easily hosting the World Cup, either in St. Petersburg or Moscow. They are both capable places.

[QUOTE="wstfld"] The World Cup isn't about democracy. Its about how much money they can make. The 94 Cup made the most money ever, which is why I thought the US would win. Danm_999

its not about how much money they can make, its about background deals to win votes

Which are all predicated on how much money can be made for FIFA. FIFA probably won't make a hell of a lot on tourism in Qatar for example (what with it's rather backwards laws) than say, the USA or Australia. It'll make it's money in kickbacks and bribes.

fifa doesnt make any money from individual deals, its the individual voters on the fifa board, thats why the whole system they have is corrupt

FIFA are incredibly corrupt. I am convinced that votes were bought. Thanks to wiki leaks we can see that Russia was described by a US diplomat (can't quite remember who) that they were "mafia state".

Yeah I'm just worried we're all getting a bit "sour grapes" here I suppose because our preferred countries were looked over.

Danm_999

Well that's a bit of a stupid reason, most of the violence occurs in small specific areas. Downtown Chicago/the areas where the events would be held are pretty safe. (Besides, if violence was really that much of an issue they wouldn't have given the bid to "City of God" Rio de Janeiro :P)

But as I linked to...Vancouver is having a hell of a time with post-Olympic debt. Sure it would have been fun for the few weeks during the Olympics, but I'm not sure the after-effect is worth it.

I remember Malkin actually using the word Obamolympics. That should show how much it was about Obama and not benefit/detriment to Chicago.

I hope the US gets to host. I'm sure all of our brilliant minds can come up with something a bit more annoying, detrimental, and embarrassing to the spectacle than the vuvuzelas.

Depends how it's run. Here in Sydney, we made a profit from the 2000 Olympics of almost $2 billion US. Meanwhile, Athens four years later made a loss.

That's maintenance on the Olympic Park though, which isn't just used for the Olympics. Kind of a different issue considering the venue has been extensively used since then for sporting events, festivals and concerts; you're considering the cost it took to host the Olympics, and then use the facilities to host events for a decade.

If they'd only have used it for the Olympics, sure, it'd be a huge loss, but considering it's perpetually used as a major community and events centre, it's not exactly surprising there have been ongoing costs beyong the Olympics.

Not to mention that article is quite out of date and ignores that many unused parts of the park were since decomissioned.

We can't really afford it either. We have roads that need repairing and public transport improvements, not hosting the World Cup. It's really annoying to see our fellow Englishman's arrogance.

What hooliganism culture? We're not in the 1980's anymore. I've been to hundreds of matches in the last 5 years at least, and never seen crowd trouble. Sure there's the occasional incident here and there, like the one yesterday in Birmingham which hasn't happened anywhere in this country for many years now. English clubs were banned from Europe because of crowd trouble, and that culture of violence never returned.

Still - I don't really want to build new stadiums that will take a while to pay off when the Chicago/Illinois economy isn't great right now in the first place. I'll take your word for it that Sydney did alright financially, but the trend seems to be that the host city loses a ton of money. I can't imagine the politicians in Chicago running things well enough to be an exception to that rule.

Well, the issue wasn't really paying off the facilities in Sydney, the issue was that people still wanted to use them. This meant you had to keep maintaining them. That's not so much a negative honestly; it would be absorbed in the state budget for recreation and park upkeep. But you're right, since the Sydney games Athens and Beijing lost money. Plus, the financial climate is a bit more grim now than it was 10 years ago.

Oh it just doesn't happen at matches. Remember the Scots in Manchester?

I was shopping last week in Manchester, we won 7-1 and City drew, numbers of fans from each team were walking through town and started shouting abuse to each other and chased one another. It probably led into a fight.
