Whenever I try to tell people that modern math and chemistry wouldn't exist without Islam they never believe me.

ball_bag
That would be because you're wrong. There would not be a gaping hole in our knowledge; other people would've discovered it.

What I mean is, they were the once that discovered it. My bad.

So to summarize, Christianity sucks and Islam is awesome. Got it.

Theokhoth

The article never says Christianity sucks. Persecution complex much?

"So while Christian crusaders were beheading enemies and tossing their heads like over-sized hacky sacks, their Muslim counterparts had a whole honor code that led them to feed the armies of their defeated enemies."

I'll just leave this right here.

Sad but true. But to Be fair King Richard was the Nicest one of them, he and Saladin actually got along quite well (there was even a proposed marriage between the two families), but they also showed no mercy to each other at times. it was a truely fascinating tale actually.

We need to have a Cracked.com sticky, not every article needs its own thread...

svenus97
But Cracked is awesome :P

A sticky would be cool but then again mods would just tell us to check the site

[QUOTE="Theokhoth"][QUOTE="ball_bag"]You asserted (laughably) that Muhammad attacked only in self-defence. The quote from the Hadiths I provided directly contradicts this.ball_bag
Do you have any actual conflicts that directly contradict this? Not all Muslims believe in the Hadith Sahih.

The Battle of Badr. tl;dr: Muhammad started it.

do like how you just state "muhammed started it" do you even know about the repeated attacks on Muslims in Medina. Not to mention truce agreements that kept getting broken by the Meccan's. The thing between Hadiths and Quran is this. Quran is considered the word of God. Hadiths are collections of the sayings and actions of the Prophet and his apostles. Most of them were collected around 200 years after the Prophet's death. Frankly you can give me a quote from Sahih Muslim. and i can show you what the Umari Treaty (not the Omar treaty that gets trodded out and not even the extremist Salafi Muslim has ever heard of it), the saying of Abu Bakr, the treaty from the Prophet to the St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai. The very attitude that Islam's incredible growth was soley (or even at all) about the religion is only because of interpretation. in fact even the Wikipedia article is crossed over it. the Ridda Wars a.k.a apostates war. You look into the reasons, and then you look into what names they're using. it looks like an article that has two people trying to write it up (historians vs religious historians). but if you look into the reasons why the Ridda Wars broke out it was primarily because of refusal to pay taxes, and outright rebellion against the Islamic state. This was also a time of empires. Once the Arabian Peninsula was secured, the Byzantium Empire and the Sassanid Empire would stand poised to attack this new found nation for all it was worth. All i'm hearing here are people who are critics and know Islam mainly by it's worst followers.

misleading article is misleading. lol

they claim that islam isn't stuck in the dark ages, and to support this they poll american muslims on weather they accept evolution. they didn't poll all muslims.

...

first of all, even if every single muslim accepted evolution, that doesn't mean what the religion itself says agrees.

the article should be called "5 Ridiculous Things You Probably Believe About Muslims"

if it were about islam, they would be quoting from the Qur'an.

Phaze-Two

Having just put in the search words Islam and Evolution.

I found a number of sites on the FRONT PAGE, that ran counter to what you may think.

Link 1

Link 2

Link 3

Link 4

Link 5

Obviously the science of evolution and Islam's view of it are gonna not mesh completely. Islamically evolution occurs because it is the will of God that these things are to occur. in the theory of evolution God doesn't even appear in the equation.

The reason i think Muslims are against or apprehensive of the theory of Evolution (despite there definently being room to see how such a theory could come to explain how we came to be in the physical sense) is because its.

A. An Idea of the West

seems a lot of the late 19th and 20th century ideas get dropped off the cart.Because they're deemed Anti-religion, anti-Islamic, Athiestic in nature.

The reason for the Islamic 'Golden Age' was because Islamic world (at that time) adopted and formed new practices, ideas, and theories into the world.

Science and Islam Part 1

Science and Islam Part 2

Science and Islam Part 3

(no these are not 'scientific' miracles found in the Quran, nor is it something that exaggerates the achievements by these Islamic scientists)

To think that Muslims, who like their Christian counterparts, who worked in the sciences achieved and gave nothing for the modern world (Muslims scientists i'm speaking of here) of any worth. Seems to me at best disingenious, and at worst racist ethnocentric orientalism.

-------------

P.S.

I am not entirely certain if Harisemo is a conservative Muslim, or a bigot in the guise of a Muslim. can't tell anymore with the bi-polar trolling going on.

people, people.. people..

is it really that hard to go and do some research? You can at least go on wikipedia and check out islam for yourself, or islam in relation to science? What their beliefs are, and if the religion itself is a supporter of scientific data. Ect.

-

Also the funniest argument in this whole thread is the "its all a lie" one.

I understand being sceptical and i also understand the concept of truth, but if you really are that sceptical to any source then why do you even believe in your own knowledge? Everything is questionable to a point, so i dont see why anyone should bring up the good ol' everything you know might be wrong- argument (not talking about this article specifically, but rather any sources given out on this thread by other users)

seems to me like there is way to much bias here. There is no point to start an argument if your position on something is a stubborn as an atheist vs theist conversation.

It's a well documented fact that the crusading armies butchered cities full of people and were basically filled with the unwanted riff raff of Medieval society. I also don't understand your comment, I never said that EVERYONE in Europe was a butcher.

Then how do you interpret this verse-

"Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together before We split them asunder ? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?" Surah Al Anbiyaa verse- 30

Now this one-

"(God is the one who) sent down the water from the sky and thereby brought forth pairs of plants, each separate from the other."

Al-Rad Verse-3

And this verse-

"Allah Almighty (God) created every animal from water. Among living objects there are some which crawl on their bellies, some walk on two legs and some on four".

Al-Noor Verse-45

Now about humans Allah Almighty has said that man was created from clay and there is another verse-

"The status of human life has been achieved after sucessfully passing through the steps of animal life."

Yes I have read the Holy Quran and I'm sure I have read that verse in a translation of the Holy Quran. Secondly according to the evolution theory all life began from water as said in the Holy quran and same is the case with plants verse. I'm not saying humans evolved but I'm saying that animal evolution has been discussed in the Holy Quran. Anyway the theory of evolution may not be exactly correct but maybe there is something related to it in the Holy Quran which us humans have not understood.

no there is nothing about human evolution in Quran. i wonder what kind of s*** translation you've been reading lulz please read a proper translation like Yousaf Ali etc.

(82:7)

(13:3)

(24:45)

(71:14)

(22:5)

(23:12)

(11:61)

It's obvious that the word Evolution did not exist during the time, but the Quran consistently states "We will teach ye, what ye knows not". So why is it so hard to not see that life originated from the Earth 'clay', and that all life stems from water.

All life no matter how strong, requires water to live, and all life - including man - are made up of a large percentage water.

if you don't believe me, nor cannot your mind to that possible conclusion. try it out and see if you get back to us.

We stand apart from the animal kingdom, because God endowed us with the conciousness and the ability to turn the environment - literally - at our whims.

Since I'm Muslim (though I don't practice it) none of this really came to a surprise. But still, this is a good read for those who aren't truly informed about the religion.

Anyway the theory of evolution may not be exactly correct but maybe there is something related to it in the Holy Quran which us humans have not understood.SaudiFury

no there is nothing about human evolution in Quran. i wonder what kind of s*** translation you've been reading lulz please read a proper translation like Yousaf Ali etc.

We stand apart from the animal kingdom, because God endowed us with the conciousness and the ability to turn the environment - literally - at our whims.

whats your point? that quran says we evolved?

facts based on scientifically found evidence. facts about right-now testable evidences the verses of the Quran, do not seem to no, to the theory of evolution. difference between the theory and the Quran. Quran - God Will's His creation (universe, and life itself) into being. theory of evolution only explains how one species transitions into another. and before you jump down my throat. no it's not a cat transitions into a squirrel or crocodile. evolution is more like the Honda Civic 2001 transitioning into Honda Civic 2002 model (in a very crude model example). It by natural selection (changes in environment, predators, etc) and the passage of time. Hell... go to an old castle (like i've done in Spain) and see the armor. the armor is my height (5'3" ) which was considered NORMAL height at the time. the average spaniard is much taller today in a mere passage a 300-400 years.

i've examined that silly argument before and it's ridiculous...

why did it take so long for evolution to become common knowledge (thanks to science, not the koran) if it was really in the koran? (which, really, it's just not) lol. you'd think god would know how to make it more clear to us how evolution works, and make sure we understand.

and this all assumes god even exists... where's the demonstrable reliable evidence of that?

Well, it IS. But by sexual selection, not natural selection.

it COULD be, keep in mind, simply that nutrition has gotten better and therefore they grow taller because they get more calcium etc...

there are better examples of evolution happening in the recent past.

i was reading the greatest show on earth by richard dawkins and it talked about how they created new DNA information in a lab test by feeding bacteria different levels of glucose and citrate and the E. Coli bacteria evolved in order to better live in an envoironment where whatever of the two food sources was most abundant. (i could be wrong about how exactly the expierement was done... sorry) but the important thing is, scientists witnessed new DNA being formed. evolution is a done deal, thanks to science, not some silly book written by mystics in the middle east or anywhere else a long time ago.

#5.If You're a Muslim Woman, You Have to Wear the Veil
That comes from Sharia law, which comes from the Qur'an. They may not all follow it, but it's in the book.#4.Our Founding Fathers Would Never Have Tolerated This Muslim Nonsense!
One of the main reasons for European migration to the U.S. was religious freedom, but anyone who's read a 3rd grade textbook already knows this.#3."Muslim" Equals "Arab"
I think 95% of us can distinguish between a religion and a nationality#2.Western Cultures Are Far More Humane Than the Bloodthirsty Muslims
Most people aren't thinking about 200+ year-old history when they make this statement, they are speaking more about countries that practice Sharia law, which comes from the Qur'an, as stated above.#1.Islam Is Stuck in the Dark AgesAgain, people are referring mainly to countries that still practice Sharia law

There is absolutely nothing in the Qur'an about women wearing a veil. Please try to be a little less ignorant.
