This should be classified as a hate crime. Where is the public outrage over this? Why isn't this all over the news?

"A white man who was punched in the face in Union Square by a black man who was spewing anti-white sentiment died early Monday at Bellevue Hospital, a police source said.

Jeffrey Babbitt, 62, fell into a coma after he was randomly attacked Wednesday afternoon by a man who was yelling, Im going to punch the first white man I see!

Lashawn Marten, 31, was arrested on charges of misdemeanor assault in the attack. The unprovoked punch knocked Babbitt backward, and he hit his head on the ground.

Babbitt lived in Brooklyn and was caregiver to his mother, who has Alzheimers disease, neighbors said.

After Marten assaulted Babbitt, he attacked two men who tried to help the stricken man, and then challenged two responding cops, officials said.

Marten is being held on $1 million bail. Charges against him will likely be upgraded."

It is a hate crime and...

After Marten assaulted Babbitt, he attacked two men who tried to help the stricken man, and then challenged two responding cops, officials said. Marten is being held on $1 million bail. Charges against him will likely be upgraded.

public outrage? He isn't a free man.

Its probably not all over the news because the man was arrested and they are upgrading the charges after a further review. Nice race baiting by the way. I don't care if its a hate crime either way, the man will be thrown behind bars.

There isn't much outrage because that is blatantly a hate crime and he is being punished for it, and it looks like accordingly. There isn't much beyond average levels of grief and hatred to be had here.

Everyone got pissed off at Zimmerman because no one was sure if it was a hate crime and he got off on self-defense. Even if it was, there will always be those that think he got away with murder spawned from racism.

Yeah it probably is a hate crime. The man is clearly going to be tried on much higher charges and has been in custody since the incident. The problem with the Zimmerman incident is that hardly any action was taken or even looked into after someone was shot and killed. Trying to link these two together just makes you look like a race baiting cvnt.

That's actually not true...they did investigate and they simply found there wasn't evidence that contradicted his story and that there wasn't a case for prosecution. Looking at the joke of a trial that happened after the public outrage, I think it's pretty obvious why that was.

Agreed.

The perpetrator openly stated that he intended to select a victim on the basis of race.  Failure to upgrade the charge (currently just "misdemeanor assault") to a hate crime charge would be unconscionable.

I'm not getting into the semantics of the Zimmerman trial, my point being he's clearly trying to bait here. They aren't similar. His only problem is that they didn't clap 'hate' right in front of the charges from the get go. There's no outrage here because this man will obviously serve time for the killing.

Well just saying, technically what you said isn't correct. I do agree these cases aren't all that similar either though...with that said...it is strange it wasn't labeled a hate crime from the get go. If the story is correct, the scumbag flat out said racist crap and seemed to pick his victims on that basis. Even if the guy assaulted lived (and the story was different), how wasn't the original assault NOT considered a hate crime? Why does this elderly man have to die in order for the appropriate charges to be brought?

I agree it probably is a hate crime under the law, especially if what he said and done are accurate to the story. He simply asked a question: Where is the outrage here? I answered it, because the guy is behind bars and will face justice.

No it wouldn't.. The only reason why something like the Trayvon Martin case blew up was how the public perceived a supposed prejudice with the police's handling of it.. If he were charged and locked up immediately, we wouldn't have heard jack sh!t about it.

Sounds like the assailant was drugged up or something. Tragic story, I've been seeing a lot more stories like this since the Trayvon case closed with Zimmerman getting off.

He's in jail, and the evidence is overwhleming that it was a hate crime, and he'll be prosecuted along those lines.

Should we put all crimes like this on the front page? No.

The Trayvon Martin case was unusual in a lot of ways, not only for the Stand Your Ground Law, but also Trayvon being underage, George Zimmerman not being arrested immediately.

Nice baiting mingmao. I'm glad you are branching out and having racially tinged threads rather than just misogynist ones.

I am surprised no one brought this up after I posted about it two days ago in the Texas dad beats his daughter's child molester to death. He won't be charged thread when I posted the Brooklyn man may be brain dead after unprovoked hate attack in Union Square article.

And yes, the man should be charged with a hate crime due to his statements prior to the attack.

The amount of race-baiting on this forum after the Zimmerman case is pretty ridiculous.

WhiteKnight77

what is there to talk about?  A racist black guy punched and killed a white guy.  It's pretty open and shut, they caught the guy

You missed the point.

Yeah. You're missing the 'bigger picture'. You all will wake up one day.

It's ok because the guy who died was white.

Pretty much how it works. You can't be racist towards white people. It shouldn't work that way, but it does.

Hate crime laws are pretty stupid.
