Ok I'm starting to get worried now. Earthquakes left n right.

I hope this isn't a precursor to a super volcano eruption, you know like the one in Yellowstone.
Damn! Now you'll get all the credit if the entire US is engulfed in magma :(What's next? Yellowstone? Off the coast of Oregon? :o

The Earth gets, on average, 17 earthquakes every single year averaging magnitude 7-7.9. What is really going on here is an increased level of reporting of earthquakes, perhaps because swine flu has officially died down and the media needs some new doomsday thing with which to scare the masses into tuning in and to make themselves money. :P

Or more of them are closer to land

Ya I've heard that most happen in the ocean and that's why we never hear about them cause we've never noticed them. If it's true just seems to be the luck of the draw on where they occur.
This hits a little close to home for me. My dad is on 15 day surfing trip in the middle of the Indian Ocean. They are iiterally right on top of the epicenter. We're trying to reach his and his friends' satellite phones as I type this. Hope for the best, guys, please.

You're just saying that, as to prevent rioting from happening in the forums. Because you already have a ticket for one of the Arks! :o :Psomeone correct me if I´m wrong but doesn´t this mean there will be a tsunami somewhere very soon?
anyway there are earthquakes all the time so there´s nothing to worry about

You're just saying that, as to prevent rioting from happening in the forums. Because you already have a ticket for one of the Arks! :o :P Somebody's seen 2012...OK, everyone who finds this weird, observe here the list of earthquakes magnitude 7-7.9 in 2010:
April 6 - Indonesia - 7.8
April 4 - Mexico - 7.2
February 26 - Japan - 7.0
January 12 - Haiti - 7.0
January 3 - Solomon Islands - 7.0
Total: 5
It is now April 6, 97 days into the year. If the rate of earthquakes magnitude 7-7.9 continues until the end of the year, we will have had approximately 18 such earthquakes. The annual global average is 17.
The idea that we are getting far more earthquakes than normal is nonsense. We are having more reports of earthquakes than normal. That is all.
someone correct me if I´m wrong but doesn´t this mean there will be a tsunami somewhere very soon?

Yea, there's a local tsunami watch in effect
This song is oddly fitting.

Well an earthquake doesn't automatically mean tsunami. I'm assuming you are thinking of the 2004 earthquake that caused the tsunami? Well the thing is that was an absolutely massive earthquake that caused a huge crack in the seabed which caused a huge shifting of a large mass of water which led to a rapid change in the movement of the water which led to the tsunami which led to me talking about this which led to me writing which led to a lot. In a nutshell. :P EDIT: however, despite this being a smaller earthquake it does not completely leave out the possibility of a tsunami. there could still be a tsunami. its just less likely to occur because of the smaller shakes would lead to smaller cracks in the seabed and also less likelihood of any cracks at all. thats completely up to chance, though.someone correct me if I´m wrong but doesn´t this mean there will be a tsunami somewhere very soon?

That was an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, outside the range of 7-7.9. We only get an average of one of those a year. If that continues on its current "trend" then we would get 4 of them, which would indeed be highly abnormal, but one single earthquake does not exactly constitute a trend.
By the way, did any of you hear about that 7.0 quake in the Solomon Islands? No? Could that perchance be because it happened prior to the quake in Haiti? :P

I know. I mentioned that a couple posts up. Earthquakes magnitude 8+ only happen an average of once a year. I stuck to earthquakes magnitude 7-7.9 because they are major enough to potentially cause serious damage, but frequent enough that one can at least reasonably hope to draw a trend from the occurrences of them thus far in the year. Any extrapolations from the fact that we got one magnitude 8+ earthquake in February will be utterly meaningless.
