7.8 Quake in Indonisia

There are hundereds of earthquakes a day, and on average 6-6.9 earth quakes happen once every 3 days, and 7-7.9 earthquakes happen about 1.5 times a month. The only thing that's increasing is the media coverage.

I wonder how long until we here in California really get hit with our "big one". Almost seems like the quakes are slowly building upwards toward us.

The Earth gets, on average, 17 earthquakes every single year averaging magnitude 7-7.9. What is really going on here is an increased level of reporting of earthquakes, perhaps because swine flu has officially died down and the media needs some new doomsday thing with which to scare the masses into tuning in and to make themselves money. :P

That was an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, outside the range of 7-7.9. We only get an average of one of those a year. If that continues on its current "trend" then we would get 4 of them, which would indeed be highly abnormal, but one single earthquake does not exactly constitute a trend.

By the way, did any of you hear about that 7.0 quake in the Solomon Islands? No? Could that perchance be because it happened prior to the quake in Haiti? :P

OK, everyone who finds this weird, observe here the list of earthquakes magnitude 7-7.9 in 2010:

April 6 - Indonesia - 7.8
April 4 - Mexico - 7.2
February 26 - Japan - 7.0
January 12 - Haiti - 7.0
January 3 - Solomon Islands - 7.0

Total: 5

It is now April 6, 97 days into the year. If the rate of earthquakes magnitude 7-7.9 continues until the end of the year, we will have had approximately 18 such earthquakes. The annual global average is 17.

The idea that we are getting far more earthquakes than normal is nonsense. We are having more reports of earthquakes than normal. That is all.
