Listen, your favorite bands suck. LJ's favorite bands suck. My favorite bands suck. But we have all successfully advertised their careers on a gaming forum. They all win

R.E.M., Siouxsie and The Banshees, Sonic Youth, Pixies, The Pretenders, U2, Beastie Boys, and The Jesus and Mary Chain.xdude85

Thats a good start but add these bands:

Cocteau Twins

Echo and the Bunnymen

New Order

The Replacements

Husker Du

The Stone Roses

The Pixies

The Violent Femmes

The Smiths

The Talking Heads (started in 70's but peaked in 80's)

------------------------------

But as for the most popular, it was dominated by these:

Michael Jackson

Madonna

Prince

Bruce Springsteen

Huey Lewis and the News

Duran Duran

You could rarely go 2 hours at any point on MTV and not hear something from 1 of these artists

I dunno, there were so many musicians back then who were able to make such a catchy melodies...

Anyway, my favourite songs back then were usually the ones from boy bands / male singers who played very melodic pop with decent amount of electronic instruments used for backgound such as Alphaville (Sounds like a melody, Big in Japan, Forever young,...), Tears for Fears (Shout, Everybody wants to rule the world, Sowing the seeds of love,...) or Nik Kershaw (Wouldn't it be good, Riddle, I won't let the sun go down on me,...).

I'll just post my responses from another 80s thread:

1. Like A Prayer-Madonna

2. Running Up That Hill-Kate Bush

3. When Doves Cry-Prince

4. Time After Time-Cyndi Lauper

5. Sweet Child O' Mine-Guns N' Roses

6. These Dreams-Heart

7. Just Like Heaven-The Cure

8. Self Control-Laura Branigan

9. Total Eclipse of the Heart-Bonnie Tyler

10. Atmosphere-Joy Division

11. Fool's Gold-The Stone Roses

12. Oh Father (Madonna) So hauntingly gorgeous. The sob in her voice gives this song so much emotion.

13. Cloudbusting (Kate Bush) I love the strings and the banjo in this song. It makes the track sound exotic.

14. Hounds of Love (Kate Bush) The title track of a masterful album. Nuff said.

Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears for Fears is one of my favorites of all time, but since Pirate all ready listed it, I'll link to Shout.

15. I Could Give You A Mirror (Eurythmics) I actually like this more than the much more famous Sweet Dreams.

16. Here Comes The Rain Again (Eurythmics) I love the transition from the darker verses to the warm refrain.

17. Live To Tell (Madonna) One of the greatest ballads of the 80s. It's such a mystical and beautiful song and the "If I ran away..." apart is one of the greatest moments in pop music.

18. This Charming Man (The Smiths) Morrisey's solo music is sh!t, but man that dude can sing. Listen to how nimble his vocals are on this song.

19. Breakout (Swing Out Sister) This song is a slice of jazzy pop euphoria and the deep vocals are addictive.

20. In Your Eyes (Peter Gabriel) Another beautifully mystical song. I personally think this song is better than any of Phil Collins' solo hits.

21. Behind the Lines (Genesis) I love this fusion of Motown and prog rock. Those two shouldn't mix, but they make it work wonderfully.

22. It's My Life (Talk Talk) This original version b!tchslaps the No Doubt cover.

80s was a good decade for music

Metal began to boom and most of the bands where great (bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Anthrax....ect).

Bands that where popular in the 70s pushed there starpower into the 80s (bands like Rush, ACDC, Clapton, Tom Petty, ZZ top, Aerosmith).

Then there where artist like Def Leppard, U2, Police, Van Halen, SRV, Dire Straits.....ect that took off in the 80s

He may be passionate, but also a snob. He's a music snob because he says others listen to crappy music because it isn't music that he likes. He says the music he listens to is better and everybody else are just sheep for listening to songs that were popular. That's snobby. He can love his music all he wants without saying others are sheep for listening to music he does not personally care for.

Destination Unknown - Missing Persons

In a Big Country - Big Country

Lips Like Sugar - Echo and the Bunnymen

She Bangs the Drums - The Stone Roses

Teenage Riot - Sonic Youth

Actually it's in the Wiki page he linked....so it's incredibly silly that he persisted. However, the band has routinely rejected classification, particularly as a gothic rock band. Robert Smith said in 2006, "It's so pitiful when 'goth' is still tagged onto the name The Cure", and added, "We're not categorisable. I suppose we were post-punk when we came out, but in total it's impossible [...] I just play Cure music, whatever that is." Smith has also expressed his distaste for gothic rock, describing it as "incredibly dull and monotonous. A dirge, really."
