A big problem with a friend.

So, yesterday in a chatroom I was constantly at the receving end of the great number of jokes my friend was making. I left because it got annoying. When she PMed me asking me why I left, I told her I was annoyed at her because of being repeatedly at the receiving end of the jokes.

She took it more seriously than I thought, and said she wouldn't do it again. I told her it was fine as long as she didn't go overboard. She left then.

So, today I told her I was sorry if my message was too harsh and she said she'd been really worried by that and it made her cry. (That was a bit of a surprise.) I told her it was OK if she made a joke about me once in a while but not all the time. She insisted that she wouldn't ever do it again and, seeing that we are both humorous, it was very disappointing.

I talked in chat to her, but our conversation was strained. She'd give three-word replies or none at all. I didn't think one message of mine would go this far. How can I be friends again?

Well, I have no idea what you should do considering you already said to her that it's ok for her to do the jokes as long as it isn't all the time.

My only guess is that after some time she may open herself to you again. That's my best bet, though it isn't very helpful. Hope you get to be friends again. o/

I think she's being a victim of her own hormones, give her time.

It sounds that she is either very oversensitive, or that the teasing was a somewhat classicly immature indication that she "likes" you, to use the parlance. If the former is true, then time and showing you're not upset should go a long way to fixing matters. If it's the latter, then the issue is probably that instead of responding playfully you took it seriously, and in addition she's not getting anywhere. Then again, maybe it's something else, but those are my best guesses based on the information at hand. In any case, time, not agonizing over this, and holding up your end of things until she feels comfortable to come back into the fray is likely the end result.

You could try joking about yourself in some way, it could help lessen the tension.

Why don't you call her on the phone and actually talk to her? Sounds like she's pretty hung up on you.

I don't mean to go against the crowd here but when I read that I think you are the one making a big deal of nothing. You had a little tantrum and left the conversation when she was having fun. If she is poking jokes at you and you are just sitting there taking to the point where you had to leave for some personal time maybe she is just bored with you. Learn some comebacks. I didn't have a 'little tantrum.' I 'left' and later answered her that I was annoyed a bit. I didn't scream about it or anything.

Oh, and she most likely overreacted because being picked on by many people at the same time as she told me some weeks before and probably thought I was doing the same.

It's a little awkward, but if she's your friend she'll get over it with a little time. Try joking with her for other things and bring up subjects that you two usually talk about. She's probably chastising herself about upsetting you.

Sounds like you either need to lighten up or find new friends.
