Hey folks, I am a long time member and reader of gamespot forums. I post sometimes but not too often.

I have 2 questions regarded pop culture in todays society.

First question is, why do kids think its cool to buy tons of fitted hats yet they keep the gold sticker on the front and the bill completely flat? I never understood this and it looks completley stupid to me.

Before I ask my second question I just want to say this: I DONT like rap at all. I actually dislike it strongly, esspecially popular club style rap. At the same time, I will not ridicule people for listening to and enjoying this kind of music. I understand that everybody has different tastes and arguing about what music somebody likes is senseless and a complete waste of time.

Ok now that I have that out of the way onto my second question.......

Why do most popular rap / club songs have some guy constantly saying "hey" or "hoy" or "yeah" over and over and over again as part of the beat? This drives me completely crazy, what are they saying hey too? Why are they saying yeah over and over? Are they saying hello to somebody over and over again by repeating "hey"?.

OT please clarify this for me!!!!!!!!!

1: because they see other people doing it. Duh..? that's what makes things popular, lots of people doing it. It looks stupid to me too, but whatever. Not my scene in the first place, so i wouldn't be biased in its' favor. 2: I think it originated with freestyling and street rapping, where they had to do it Acapella, and the "yeahs" would just be reinforcement in the background. But as for now, it just is there to supposedly add depth to the instrumental.

in regards to the hats -- It's just a fad, like parachute pants or leg warmers. It's just a clothing trend, but it's been going on for a while already. To answer your second question... I don't know. Ask the artists themselves.

Leaving the sticker with a flat top is an Usher/Fat Joe/Soulja Boy thing. It used to be curved tops without a sticker, and that was much better. Anyway, people like Fat Joe and Soulja Boy, that's why it's popular. It's Bullcrap if you ask me

The people who wear the fitted hats with the stickers on them piss me off. Most the time they are shallow dumb wannabee gangster people. Its completely pathetic how so many dummies in our world find it cool to dress like a gangster.

These same kids would piss there pants if they were confronted by a real gangster who was about to blow them away.

Another thing I hate is people who wear sports hats for teams they DO NOT CARE ABOUT. I see so many idiots at the bars and walking around wearing White Sox fitted hats with the sticker on. They think its cool and gangster because Fifty cent does it and Dr. Dre did it wayyyyyy back in the day. Id be suprised If I asked some these people who are the best players on the team they wouldnt even know the White Sox are a baseball team.

PATHETIC!!!!!

Please help me regain faith in humanity people....please......

i am pretty sure that it started WAY before the likes of Fat Joe (whos career has died, btw) and Soulja Boy (who we barely hear of ever since his breakout song has faded away).

mustve been 50 cent then, he got really popular in the early 00's and everyone was an eminem poser back then. Then 50 Cent came out with that in da club music video, and they started copying his style. was like 2003. Anyway, in the 90's your hat had to broken in and if you were caught with a sticker, you'd get laughed at

I think I need to bump this topic back up in the afternoon when all the teenagers are out from school. They probably have a better idea about the stupid hat trend than I do.

I'm trying to figure out which theory of popular culture could apply to any of the two questions. For the first one, I think we can apply the "people are unthinking masses and will devour any item en masse" theory. That's the technical name for it. For the question about why hip-hop artists include various words... I don't think I have an answer for that. It probably came from someone stalling trying to think of a verse, the artist actually using it and people liking it and other artists adopting the method. .

I think that might be right.

As far as that hats, I always thought they were suppose to be worn like that. Aren't those things stickers of authenticity? I guess you could remove them, but I'm guessing kids you say something along the lines of "your hat is fake" for something like that. Rappers made it super popular.

I like the hat trend. :P But like others have said it is a fad. You don't see that many curved hats any more and they used to be all people wore. It was weird if your cap was flat a few years ago. About rap I don't like mainstream rap that much. I like some more underground artists but overall I'm not really a rap person.

1. I have no idea why you have so much offense to people who do that (I dont do that if you are asking), they arent hurting you by doing it. 2. Its catchy, thats why most pop songs in general have it. It isnt anything new.

They do it to show it's new. You leave the tags on the thing it shows you have money, cause you always got new stuff. I think I'm going to leave the window sticker on my new car when I get one. So the hoes know I'm financially stable.

Ha, I saw my friend with a hat in the exact description you gave. I dunno, its just the new style. I'm sure I'm gonna hate it when my kid wears his clothes with the tags still on.

If you go out to clubs / bars you are not going to hear these songs. You will hear the pop rap / dance garbage all night. Thats what im talking about here. These kinds of songs are played all over the place no mattter where you go.

1. Wearing fitted hats looks cool to some. I wear one myself because it fits me, and if it fits you, why not? Then I can ask myself this: Why do Metalheads wear spikey bracers, or paint their face white/black whatever they wear or paint, Know what I'm saying here? No matter what people wear or not, it's their own personal choice, Nothing is wrong with it. They wear what they want. 2. The "yeah yeah" thing is a way for some musician rappers to prepare to freestyle... When a rapper hear the beat, they just want to add the "yeah" into the beat so they got it all covered and ready to spit. It's a sort of a warmup for some rappers. And to the HEY and YO yay stuff in popular club music, it's just a fancy way for musicians to combine with the beat in the background.

The hat thing came from hip-hop artist. People in low-income areas were bootleg/knockoff clothing is common would leave the stickers on to show that they owned a authentic New Era hat and not a counterfeit.

I think this...yea people some times think that leaving the tags on clothes makes it look fresh...out of the store...but most people get it confused... cause it may look like they stole it.....hmm its a fad though. On to the next one.
