Is that actually considered normal in hockey?

I don't watch it at all, but I would have thought that punching somebody in the face was illegal whether in a game or not. The fact the referee was just watching just raises serious questions.

It's allowed as long as one of them doesn't hit the ice, then it gets broken up and they get penalties.

May I ask why you are allowed to punch somebody in the face in a hockey game?

Simple, they are allowed to punch you in the face back, basic rules of self defense. There is a penalty for it, so it's not like it's not punishable or anything.

It's just part of the sport? You're allowed to check, and getting checked hurts a HELL of a lot more than a punch does.

Is there anything stopping these guys from suing one another in that eventuality?

Thats awesome. I always wondered if the ice skates in hockey games have a shallow in between or are they flat?

Well as long as its a legal-clean hit yes, they cannot sue. However as someone stated in this thread earlier Todd Bertuzzi made an illegal punch to the back of Steve Moores head paralyzing him and breaking his neck, he was sued and banned from the league for a year or two.

Edit: In terms of checking you must not use your shoulders or elbows and your skates are not allowed to leave the ice. Fighting is an automatic penalty for both players, and the general rules are just punching.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't it make more sense to penalize people for punching one another?

I see, thanks for the info... I suppose as long as it's above board I have no problem with it.

Anybody who fights automatically receives a minimum of a 5 minute major penalty.
