I go to South High School, home of the Rebels. Our mascot is Johnny Reb, and recently the Student Council decided that he was too racist and should be removed. Usually our senate is preoccupied with coloring posters for random school events which no one will attend, but now they've decided to draw attention to themselves by crusading against what they percieve as racism. I think it' s ridiculous, and would like your opinions on my letter. --------- To the South High students, teachers, staff, and administration: As a descendant of Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, it absolutely appalls me to see people of this school trying to get rid of Johnny Reb. Listed are several reasons why removing him would be nothing short of a travesty. Slavery was one of the most terrible periods in American history, and anyone who tries to justify it is a fool. But I don't think people are making a concerted effort to understand it. People assume that Southern slavery was based on racism, which is untrue. Slavery was out of economic necessity (which again does not justify or excuse it; it was still something that never should have happened). The Southern economy was based on plantations, and in order to maintain these plantations cheap labor was needed. Of course there were racists in the South and there still are today, but to generalize that the entire population was or is racist is quite ridiculous. Next, we have people confusing the Abolitionist movement with the intentions of the Union Government. True, both wanted to end slavery, but the similarities end there. The Abolitionist movement truly believed that black people were worthy of equal rights, and their intentions were of the noblest sort. The reasons the Union had for ending slavery were purely selfish. Southern plantations produced so much money that the individual Southern states were getting too powerful. The Union government was threatened by this. The Union didn't care about the well-being of black people any more than the South did, evidenced by the fact that it took until nearly 100 years after the end of the Civil War for black people to get the rights that they deserved. The South wanted to secede from the Union because they believed it was a right guaranteed by the Constitution. They chose to call themselves the Confederacy after the Articles of Confederation, the first written plan for American government. It favored state rights over federal rights. Once again, not everyone in the South was a racist. General Jackson, second-in-command of the Confederacy, was the very first professor in the history of the Virginia Military Institute to allow black students in his classes. Ulysses S. Grant, commander of the Union army, owned slaves at the start of the Civil War. Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate forces, did not. Less than 33% of white Southerners owned slaves before the war started. To assign a racist connotation to everyone in the Confederacy is in itself an act of racism. People fail to understand that Johnny Reb also represents hundreds of years of American Southern culture. There is certainly a negative aspect to it, but to focus on only the negatives is unfair. The slave trade started under the French and Portuguese flags. Is it now wrong to be French or Portuguese? It is all well and good to crusade against things that may offend people, but to crusade against everything that may offend people is unrealistic. Nothing would be left, because a racist connotation can be assigned to almost anything if you try hard enough. To take down Johnny Reb because you assume he is a racist symbol perpetuates the incorrect stereotype that all Southerners are racists. It is an insult to my people. But no one considered that fact, did they? My heritage is something to be ashamed of, right? That is the message put across by the removal of Johnny Reb. This is discrimination, and I won't stand for it. Symbols only have the meanings that we as a society choose to assign them, and rather than getting rid of the symbol, I believe we should attempt to correct these misunderstandings. Generations upon generations of South High School students have proudly graduated as Rebels. To change such a tradition at this point in time is illogical. If you want to examine this further, we can take a look at some other schools in the state. We have the East High Angels: potentially offensive to non-Christians. We have the West High Cowboys: potentially offensive to Native Americans. We have the North High Vikings, named for a group of people famous for raping and pillaging. Should we now change all of those school mascots? I am not a racist, and I am glad that the Union prevailed in the Civil War. I am not proud of the actions of my forefathers, and nor should I be. But there is not one group of people on the planet whose ancestors weren't guilty of some wrongdoing at some point in the past. I believe that people of all races, genders, nationalities, religions, and sexual orientations should be equal under the law. This motion to remove Johnny Reb is one of good intention, but I believe it is misguided and the process will only serve to cause further cultural misunderstanding. I respectfully ask that you do not remove Johnny Reb from this school. Sincerely, Jason -------------- Well? What do you think?

Is Johnny Reb a Confederate Soldier, or an African American. Because if he is an African American he is in the same boat as the Cleveland Indians and the Red Skins. (People have been trying to get them to change their mascots for years)

I think it's a very well thought out, well written letter. I'm not sure that will change their minds, but I agree with you. The "Rebels" are a part of our heritage, and much more than just the losing side in the Civil War.

My recommendation is to condense it......a history lesson isn't needed. Longer is not necessarily better, and may in fact end up boring the reader among other things. Stick to things that are directly relevant to your argument and the point you are trying to get across. It's more than likely they know their history.

Just my two cents.

Thats evident.

I understand how you feel, but you're fighting a losing battle. No matter how much you don't like it, most people who celebrate the Confederacy and the Rebels, are racist. I lived and went to high school in Georgia, just south of Atlanta. One day, the redneck "population" at school decided to wear their Dixie Outfitters clothing, with every intention to offend the black students. The Rebel flag is basically the Racist flag now, if I'm correct even the KKK flys it. Unless drastic changes in opinion occur, you're screeching to the choir, and they have no intention of listening...

That's about all we did. Robinson is 7-28 for his three years here and the university STILL will not fire him. They decided it'd be better to let HIM fire his entire staff. Obviously the problem wasn't with him.

Ah, yes. The age-old KKK argument. The KKK is populated by a bunch of intolerant idiots, and their opinions should not have any bearing on actual important issues. If I started a hate group and decided to fly the Spainish flag, would it then become unacceptable for Spaniards to take pride in it?

Meh. I'm a life-long Colorado State fan, and will be attending it shortly. The idiots fired Sonny Lubick, the man who established the school as a MWC powerhouse, because he had a four year period of inconsistency. Before Lubick, we hadn't made a bowl or won a rivalry game in over a decade. During the Lubick years, we were knocking off big-time programs like CU.

That would be an issue to worry about in 200 years, if your group actually got to the magnitude of interlocerance that the KKK has. Like I said, whether you like it or not, that is how it is and that bunch of intolerant idiots, who fly the Rebel flag, have an influence and bearing on the fact that the flag brings racism to mind. I remember in middle school, hearing stories in history class about kids who were told as children growing up, if they ever saw the Rebel flag flying, to leave that area immediatly. Culturally, they were afraid of the symbol. It holds the same fear as a Jewish person seeing a Swastika flying. I continue to stress, as much as you may not like it, the underlying message is still there...

And while we're into "what if" scenerios, what if there was a town, somewhere in the U.S., that was originally a Germam colony. Would it be okay to change their mascot to "Ari" or "Adolf" and be the Aryans? I mean they're taking pride in their German heritage, are you saying if some of them were related to Nazi's its not okay? Of course it was wrong back then, but now they're just taking pride in where they came from, right?

But there is nothing that can justify the existence of the Aryan race and the Nazi regime. Slavery cannot be justified, but the Confederacy itself can be. The Aryan race was based purely on genocide. The Confederacy was based on economics, Constitutional rights, state vs. federal power, and many other things in addition to slavery.

You should include George Washington in there too, he owned slaves and there is a state and a city named after him. No one seems to offended by either.

  • Why is it alright for George Washington to support slavery and war but not the South? Both sides honestly thought they were being unfairly treated what makes the Confederates more wrong?
  • The Confederates stood for some inhumane rights to be upheld but they honestly thought they needed to protect what they believed in and fighting for what you believe is what George Washington was all about.
  • There are teams called the Bears and Lions but Bears and Lions sometimes kill people so does that mean the team supports what some Bears and Lions do? Of course not.

George Washington died almost 80 years before the Civil War, how the hell are you trying to connect the two? George Washington was fighting for a free nation, free from the tyranny of King George II. He was fighting for Constitutional Rights that they believed in, of which slavery was not. And I won't even address your last statement. :|

Thats evident.

I understand how you feel, but your fighting a losing battle. Unless drastic changes in opinion occur, your screeching to the choir, and they have no intention of listening...

Ah, yes. The age-old KKK argument. The KKK is populated by a bunch of intolerant idiots, and their opinions should not have any bearing on actual important issues. If I started a hate group and decided to fly the Spainish flag, would it then become unacceptable for Spaniards to take pride in it?

But the Swastika is an ancient Hindu symbol. So technically I could fly that and it wouldn't be racist. (Though I would have to explain the whole, Nazi's stealing the symbol part)

It's still extremely inappropriate and offensive. The Nazis single handedly transformed the meaning of the Swastika.

I would very much appreciate some more opinions.SmashBrosLegend

Very well written.. im not sure if they will actually pay any attention to it.. but your points are valid and i agree. Since you've taken the time to type it all up and taken the time to think about what you want to say, send it to them as is (i can't see how it can be improved) and let us know if you get any response. Good luck!

Does not matter. The Swastika is a part of my heritage

In Hinduism, the two symbols represent the two forms of the creator god Brahma: facing right it represents the evolution of the universe (Pravritti), facing left it represents the involution of the universe (Nivritti).

The swastika is considered extremely holy and auspicious by all Hindus, and is regularly used to decorate items related to Hindu culture. It is used in all Hindu yantras and religious designs. Throughout the subcontinent of India, it can be seen on the sides of temples, religious scriptures, gift items, and letterheads. The Hindu god Ganesh is often shown sitting on a lotus flower on a bed of swastikas.WIKIPEDIA

If you look, the Nazis took it and turned it on its side. The swastika isn't supposed to be like that. Don't even try to say they changed the meaning of it, it was been around WAAAAAAAAY longer than the **** holocaust.

It's a part of mine too--the Nazis massacred my people. Also, I'm deeply offended by your last line. That's completely unnecessary...

It was meant to say ****ing, i usually say that for emphasis not derogatory.

It is not my problem that Nazis took the symbol, and Europe even tried to ban the Swastika.

It didn't pass.

Please clarify what you mean here. I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, but from where I'm sitting it looks like you're belittling the massacre of millions of people.

What he was saying was that the Swastika's meaning has been completely changed, but there are millions of people who still see it as a symbol. I was trying to say thousands of years of history cannot be squashed and thrown aside because of something that happened in the past 100 years.

And for as why I said "****ing", that was how myself, and a few of my friends talk. When we want to add more emphasis, we usually say something(more often than not is a curse word). I know it's probably seen as crude, but that's the way I've grown up talking. I hope I don't come across as someone saying that those murders don't matter, because India has gone through many hardships themselves, it's just that the Swastika is still a symbol of my family's culture and faith and I do not like it when people talk bad about it. I cannot control the fact that Nazi Germany adopted the Swastika.

If you feel the need to moderate me, I will understand.
