Because light has seven colors to it, and our atmosphere lets in the blue rays the clearest so we have a blue sky.  We could have potentially had a red, yellow, orange, green, or purple sky had things been different

The sky is blue because air scatters short-wavelength light in preference to longer wavelengths. When we look toward a part of the sky not near the sun, the blue color we see is blue light waves scattered down toward us from the white sunlight passing through the air overhead. Near sunrise and sunset, most of the light we see comes in nearly tangent to the Earth's surface, so that the light's path through the atmosphere is so long that much of the blue and even yellow light is scattered out, leaving the sun rays and the clouds it illuminates red.

I think the ocean is blue because on the fifth day, God's pee was blue. And the sky is blue for very much the same reason, except the sky is God's vomit. >_> Duh.

Because light has seven colors to it, and our atmosphere lets in the blue rays the clearest so we have a blue sky.  We could have potentially had a red, yellow, orange, green, or purple sky had things been differentPercivalCox

This I knew, but perhaps you can tell me why the sky turns red at sunset. I've never been able to think of anything that could explain it, not that I've spent much time contemplating it. What I've come up with is some crackpot theory that when the rays of the sun hot the atmosphere at a lower angle (like at sunset) the color that is filtered is different. i have no scientific explanation for this, and if that were true the sky would probably change color as the sun was at different stages in the sky(moving from high frequency blue to low freq red.) This is the best theory I can come up with. Sad eh?

The sky is blue because grass is green and dirt is brown. What other color could it have been?
