I've been trying to get any job, in retail/fast food/restuarants etc. I turn in a lot of applications but never get an interview. Does it help if you go in every day and turn in several applications to the manager, or keep calling and bugging them about it? I've only had 2 jobs in the past, and no references. Should I make my application more neat, or put fake references down, or even put fake previous jobs I've had?

One application per job; and one check up several days later to verify the manager received the application. That's it.

First off, if they find out you're lying, you're never going to be hired.

I would suggest finding some more influential or successful adults that know you and using them as references. Also, calling and checking to see if they are considering your application does help, but you don't really have to do it more than once.

Have you tried putting "will work for minimum wage and/or food" on the resume? Works every time for me. Except then I always get paid in food.

I've seen quite a few ads from retail stores and restaurants that are looking for help in my area. It if is possible for you I would just go out there and see what store are hiring and try to do a walk-in interview when the hiring managers are there. Nowadays I wouldn't trust anyone to actually call back for these types of position that require little previous experience. And when you are lucky enough to be granted an interview, you need to show them you are willing to put in more efforts and time than the next applicant, and willing to work for less wages too. It is especially true if you have little to no prior work experience.

Whatever you do do not lie about your application... that will never end well.

this, i would however suggest checking with the manager a couple times to make sure they know you're interested. i've gotten several of my jobs not because i was overly qualified, looked particularly nice or did anything special other than call them a couple times.

I don't know about this.. maybe sometimes.. but I find over aggressive people tend to annoy managers.. at least all the managers at these type of places I've talked too.. hate to be bothered when they aren't hiring.

Neater is better, you should definitely put down previous jobs (unless you got fired and they'll give you a bad report), but don't make anything up. For entry-level jobs, the most important thing is showing up, on time and sober, every day. If an application asks for references, put down people who will vouch for your reliability.

Unless that's all you can find. 20 hours a week while you're looking for something better is better than 0 hours a week. Also, if you do a good job, they'll give you more hours.

Is it even possible to get jobs that you apply for online or should I just try in store? I've applied to dozens of jobs online and got nothing, but I'd hate to walk store to store and ask if people are **** hiring. What's your opinons on this?

All of the minimum wage jobs I have got were from walking into the store after turning in an application. One of them gave me and interview and hired me on the spot. You want to walk in and ask for the hiring manager. Tell them that you turned in an application and ask if they are currently hiring. In my experience talking to someone is 10x better then just turning in an application. Oh and don't bother calling the store, you look lazy doing that. If you really want the job you have to go out of your comfort zone.

Don't lie. Employers usually don't even check referrences until after they've interviewed you so that would just be a let down. Make the application as neat as you possibly can, as honest as you possibly can, and call them ONCE every week or so.

I know this thread is old but I really need some advice.

How do you know if the employer actually wants you to come up there as opposed to apply online? What if I go up there and they tell me to apply online, I say I've applied online, what then? It sucks when I'm applying for things like dishwashers and servers, yet I can't seem to get even THESE jobs. I don't know how to play the game. I just called up this one place and asked them if they were still hiring for dishwashers and servers after I applied onlnine . THey never got back to me. A week later, they have the thing listed up there again for dishwashers and servers >_

For whatever reason I cannot edit and I didn't finish my reply. Basically, I know that if they put me in these positions I could do these jobs. A monkey could. But how does one get his feet in the door? I don't want to show up at the job and look like an annoying prick or call up to sound like an annoying prick I don't know how you guys did it.

Most of the time it comes down to avaliability. If you're only willing or can work very specific hours of the week then most employers won't take a second look at your application. Many retail places want people with full flexability in work schedule. This sucks if your in school or have other priorities you have to take care of. After that it's pretty much a toss up. Apply for the job, then go and talk to the employer. Talk to the "hiring manager" and ask if the position is still avaliable that you applied for. That process has been most successful for me. Sometimes it just doesn't work out. I've applied for many jobs where I can work the hours needed but for some reason they don't even give me an interview and the job stays up on the unemployment websites.
