So I was on the Injustice Gamefaqs forum yesturday and made a topic about the game needing more African characters, as Black Adam and Cyborg were the only ones. I asked for someone like Vixen.

Then People started saying how Cyborg isn't African, he's African American, then I said yes So he's African then they all started saying how he wasn't African at all but African American, so i asked how could you be both but only one at the same time. Then they started going on about ho it was ignorant to think all African people come from Africa? Which then confused me.

If someone is of African descent they are African right or am I crazy?

Justforvisit

Let me help you withAmerican definitions.

African- A black person who lives in Africa.

African American- A person who's black that lives in the United States.

Middle Eastern- Anybody who's brown that lives in a desert or arid country.(That includes North Africa)

European- Anbody who lives in America who's lighter then the tanning mom except Asians.

Asian- Anybody from Asia that has an Epicanthic fold.

Yeah right, there don't live any europeans in europe xD

Do you idiots miss everything? Did you even bother to read the entire thread? How do you even fail to get it after reading "Asian"? Did you seriously edit my post?

10/10 you idiot.

This. lol

But it makes me wonder.

If you are African and moved to the US, and then had kids, would they become African American?

My riends are Korean American, japanese America, Filipino American.

So if you apply the rule, they would be African American, but not "African American"....

I personally do not like the term African american. Im so far removed from africa I have heritage there. Then on too of that we have mixed with so many other races during slavery and after slaver. You will notice that most black american (term I prefer) look different than africans. I got so many different shades of brown in my family.

Yes and no. The reason the term African American is used, is because many African Americans don't know which country/tribe their people originated from. Yes all African Americans are descendants of Africans but they are not considered African.

They would fall under the umbrella of African American. They would be more specific though, like Nigerian American.

My question is why black people who were born in the US are called African American... I have German, Irish, Scottish and French ancestry but I'm always reffered to as American or just plain old white most of the time.

What a terrible elaboration on classifications. Some of those "definitions" are quite inaccurate. Also, what about South Asians (Indians, Pakistanis, etc)? Anyways, Middle Easterners do not all live in "desert" countries or have brown skin. There are a lot of individuals in the Middle East who have lighter/fair complexions (Depending on the region). Going by your definition of European, my entire family (extended included) is European. Conversely, a much better definition of European would be anyone who has predominantly (more than 90%) European ancestry.

A thing that annoys me about American history and sociology textbooks is that white people are always referred to as "white", while everyone else is an African American, Asian American, Native American, and Hispanic/Latino (with "American" sometimes added afterward). Is it hard to acknowledge that American whites actually originated from Europe and not the sky? :P As annoying as it is, I just say "white", "black", "Asian", and "Hispanic" in everyday speech. Why waste time saying the fancy terms? :P

All human life originated from the land that we know now as Africa. It's not the same as being a descendant of a nation or group or ethnicity.

My thoughts exaclty.  Why do people not form Europe have to be classified as " x- American" when anyone with European descent is just white? Doesn't make sense.

Not if you're referring to a time of which there was no formal African identity or nationality.

Just curious what part you're confused about. If someone is the descendant of a person born in Africa, that means their children's children will also be the descendant of someone born in Africa. Thus, if someone from Africa travels around the world and ends up in the USA, their children, their grand children, and their great grand children will all be descendants of Africa. Humans originated in Africa, thus, somewhere along our family tree, there is an African couple giving birth to one of your ancestors. As such, we're all descended from Africa, even if we don't know the original tribe name.

That boy is only African if his descendant was born in the land that was formally referred to as Africa at the time. Whatever you may feel about Black Americans being referred to as African-Americans, your claim that you should also be referred to as African-American due to human origin is weak because you're making reference to a time period where the name and Identity didn't even exist till much, much later in human history.
