After the disaster that was the Republican Convention, do you think the party can pull together?

I personally think the next generation will be so goddamn liberal that the republican party will simply just finally go the **** away for good. It's farfetched, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I maintain my view that either the Republicans get their shit straight, or die in obscurity letting the libertarian party take over.

I am honestly surprised that Gary Johnson isnt capitalizing more on this disasterous convention. Trying to sway GOP members to his party.

I'm very concerned no one will take the Republican party seriously with someone like Trump as their candidate.

As said earlier, the Republicans had eight year...EIGHT FREAKING YEARS to plan for this. They have been foaming at the mouth to wipe the memory of Pres. Obama and his administration off the face of the earth.

And this is what they came up with? WTH have they been doing?

@Maroxad: If the two major parties in the U.S. were the democratic and libertarian party, then this country would be a lot better. Not perfect, but if the republicans cancerous views were finally removed, than this country would be so much more free than it is currently. At Least theoretically.

The republican party won't disappear after this election or in the future. They may struggle to win an election in the next 10 to 20 years or longer at this point. They will be tied to trump and their 2016 election campaign in the next election also no matter who the nominee is.

If Trump looses the republicans may get in next time around but if he wins he will be the last republican president ever.

@Mercenary848: The unlucky ones who survive for a while in the aftermath might choose a leader and refer to him/her as president. I couldn't really say.

Well, there would still be the Constitution Party :P But yeah, these views would move out to the fringe.

Watching some of this convention and my god, it sounds so hateful. I find it a bit disturbing. One Republican, who wasn't at the convention though, said that Hillary should be lined up and shot for treason. Wow.

That is exactly how I felt. I don't get republicans, they think cruze would forget how Donald ran him and his family in the ground all year.

Trump called Cruz's wife ugly on Twitter (which she is, but its still something you don't say about another man's wife if you ever want to be his friend or in this case get an endorsement) and accused Cruz's dad of assassinating JFK. Why are people surprised he didn't endorse him?

Man, that was a total shit show. Day 2 was pretty much an empty room. Ben Carson seriously compared Hillary Clinton to LUCIFER.... Ben, what the ****, dude? At least when Hillary Clinton disagrees with Republicans her opinions are REASONABLE. When Republicans disagree with a Clinton presidency its because GOD WILL LEAVE THE UNITED STATES? You guys are officially nuts. I am a registered Massachusetts Unenrolled voter (so I can vote anyway I want in primaries), but I am re-registering as D. I can't take any R policy seriously, even the economic ones. That party is in the looney bin.

Clinton landslide 400-100 electoral votes. Bring it on, Trumpy

Trump and the RNC fucking idiots for letting Cruz speak without getting an endorsement. Also, I'm reading that Trump told his supporters/people/delegates to boo Cruz. If they would have simply cheered for Cruz regardless of the non-endorsement, they could have later spinned his speech into an implicit endorsement. But Trump and his people are so petty and dumb that they have allowed stories about lack of unity and embarrassment for Trump at the convention dominate the news cycle. Trump's raging incompetence makes me think that other world leaders would eat his lunch.

Also, I don't like Cruz, but I'm glad he embarrassed Trump after he insulted his wife and father. The people who expected Cruz to endorse a man who trashed his family are spineless.

Whoa, let's not forget Cruz's entire history over our perception of this one moment. Cruz has a reputation in the Senate of being an inauthentic sleaze who will do anything to further his own career for a reason.

Cruz's machinations since dropping out have been to set himself up for a 2020 run.

Anyone else wonder if the Rep. are secretly working for the Democrats this cycle? So if the Dems mess it up even worse over the next four years they are guaranteed the 2020 election? What other reasoning can their be?

I regained a lot of respect for Cruz that I had lost when his campaign weakly whimpered away, and I especially disliked his desperate move to put Carly Fiorina on his ticket. I voted for Cruz in my state's primary. Too bad he did not go after Trump and demonstrate this strength during the campaign battles.

Their statements on Hillary were sad.

iirc there were chantings going on across the convention

  1. "Lock her up!"
  2. "Guilty!"

Such hatred... These people need professional help.

But there is no denial this convention was a failure. Since this disasterous convention, the Libertarian Party support has reached record high levels.

There's a much simpler explanation. They spent several decades using coded racism and bigotry to to build their coalition, the party realized that the coalition would no longer be winning one and attempted to change, Trump decided to be more racist and bigoted instead, and their base said, "Heck yes! We're with him!"

Trump is just giving the Republican voters what they want, and now that he's the nominee most of those that previously opposed him have decided that it's better to support an overt racist/bigot than the woman on the other ticket.

The fact that the division is strong is quite telling. Political parties always swallow their judgement and support the nominated candidate. The issues and differences that they had, they just brush under the table and rally for "the good of the party". Surprisingly, many prominent republicans won't do that with Trump. Kasich, Romney, Bush, Ryan, even wacko Cruz won't give him their endorsement. I give them a nod for integrity. It's a shame Bernie couldn't hold onto his.
