He might appeal and during the appeal, they could actually hand him a harsher sentence.

Hallenbeck77

I haven't been following the whole story, but doesn't he face a lifetime ban if he goes through with the appeal?

yep

And honestly, I kinda hope he doesn't because the yankees having to pay his payroll is awesome.

When will society open its eyes and realize athletes at that level, with millions of dollars on the line will take whatever they can get their hands on to try and gain even a small advantage over the competition?

I hope PED become legal again so I can stop reading about athletes/actors who put on 1-3 years worth of muscle mass in 3-6 months and claim to be drug free.

Maybe then your favorite athletes/actors will admit to spending thousands of dollars on a whole lot of drugs that improve performance, and not just anabolics, and people will understand that steroids aren't this magical thing that turns joe average into Mr.Olympia in 1-2 years, and before you even come close to achieving a physique such as that you'll likely go bankrupt.

>BRB taking some test/dbol and getting to 270, shredded in 12-24 months, just like Dwayne Johnson!

>BRB filing for bankruptcy

It does, I wanted him to get life and I'm a Yankees fan.  Get out of that huge mistake of a contract.

well they don't have to pay him while he's suspended

Very true.  However we only save I believe, 30 million?  He'll stilled be owed like 70 million when he returns.

That's how athletes get out of situations like this; watch he accidentally took some asthma medication his doctor gave him for an upper respiratory infection.

And were that the case this would have been over and done with long before now with no suspension.

He would still get suspended if they can prove he took it knowingly it has performance enhancing reasons - it'll just less of a server offense as taking Testosterone.

you don't know.

It's not.

And even if it was, every baseball player is responsible for every substance they take. MLB outlines every banned substance and players even have a dedicated number that they can call to see if what they may be taking is allowed or not.

Play stupid. You took it for health reasons, and trusted that your doctor knew best. You won't lose a sports contract if you needed to take a PED to not die - eg insulin.

Meh. Ballplayers have been using drugs or other things to help their performance for as long as the game has been played. Today it's steroids, back in the day amphhetimines, further back it was strychnine. And so on and so forth.

Caffeine is not probably(within a fair amount), and it's physically impossible to drug test for insulin; if it was there's nothing they can do about it.

Pretty silly a man with his money can't get legitimate pharmaceutical grade steroids and have a private doctor administer it. Pretty hard to fail a drug test for steroids when you have unlimited money, and can with stand the pain of testosterone suspension.

I'm a Yankees fan, but I can't stand Rodriguez. Not only is he a scumbag, but he just sucks at his job, and chokes so bad whenever he's under pressure (e.g. striking out whenever anyone is on base during the playoffs.)

Yep. Athletes have been doing this shit for as long as money's been involved (which has been forever). People worry too much about the "purity" of sport when it's never really been pure to begin with, not even in the days of the ancient Olympics.

You do know it only "PEDs", right? They didn't say anabolics, technically Coke Cola is a PED due to the caffeine. Fightingfan

How about Testosterone and Human Growth Hormones?

He took that and other PEDs. No excuses.

TRT it's legal in some sports (bullshit I know), and Human Growth Hormone for a hormonal deficiency.

It seems like every single one of them already has an excuse lined up similar to what you just said.

Just today, Nelson Cruz: "From November, 2011 to January, 2012, I was seriously ill with a gastrointestinal infection, helicobacter pylori, which went undiagnosed for over a month. By the time I was properly diagnosed and treated, I had lost 40 pounds"

The MLB doesn't care. Perhaps if he could show some legit medical records and had notified them prior to using, then he may have gotten off the hook.

Of course. Only an idiot would lose a contract for PEDs. Pretty easy to get a doc to forge some documents when you make 30 million annually.

They shouldn't be allowed in baseball. The side effects for some PED's are considerable and players shouldn't feel compelled to use these to just be able to compete and putting their health at risk.

I don't know why everyone cares so damn much about PEDs. A sports league with accepted use of roids and other drugs would reward work ethic and intelligence to a much greater degree than today. Today's sports leagues are essentially genetic lotteries. I don't see how it's considered more fair for people with the right parents to be the dominant giants in their sports, as opposed to people who strived to break free of their genetic limitations.

The main point of a sport is to win, what the player does to win should be up to him, assuming of course it's legal.

A-Rod SHOULD be banned because he used PED's and they're currently illegal, but it's incredibly stupid that they don't allow them in the first place.

You're right, some side effects can be pretty bad depending on the drug but who are we to tell them, "No, you may not become a better player, there must be an even field."?

What are we going to do next, ban players from the NBA who are too tall? Ban Usain Bolt because he's too fast?

If a player wants to risk his health to become a better athetle then he should be allowed to, it's not like they don't risk injury by training or eat like a normal person in the first place.

The only people that don't want to see steroids in their sports are the naive ones who think no one dopes behind the scenes and it's about winning with your heart rather than your all.

All of you saying PEDs should be legal have no freaking clue what you are talking about. The reason they are illegal is not because it presents health risks to the players, etc. (Although that is a factor).

The reason they are illegal is becuase its unfair to the players of the past, especially those that hold major records. It's the reason people boo'ed Barry Bonds when he broke Hank Aaron's all-time home run record. And in hindsight why its so shameful that Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa (and also Bonds) broke Roger Maris' single season HR record. Those players never had access to any performance enhancing substances. Therefore, its only fair that present day players play under the same rules.

Also, the argument that PEDs help level the playing field for genetically challenged players is downright laughable. Genetics hardly plays any role in whether a baseball player is good or bad. (Unless the person suffers from a genetic disease or disorder).

And the reason people booed Barry Bonds when he broke the home run record is the same reason they booed Roger Maris when he broke the home run record. Both men were villianized by the sports writers, not because of PEDs or anything, but because neither man kissed the sports media's ass. Unlike Babe Ruth, who was every sports writers best goddamn friend and picked up their bar tabs every night.

A-goddamn-men. If someone like Gaylord Perry is in the Hall of Fame then there's no reason why Bonds or McGuire shouldn't be.

And you know what the best part about the Perry comparison is, everything he did used to be legal in previous eras of baseball.

A perfect example of why players can only be compared within their own era.
