Apathy is a psychological term for a state of indifference -- where an individual is unresponsive or "indifferent" to aspects of emotional, social, or physical life

From wikipedia

an absence of emotion or enthusiasm

From princeton

Apathy is not controlling your emotions. Your emotions do not exist or fluctuate. You cannot be happy, but you cannot be sad. If you never have the lows you can never have the highs and you will never know what it is to be happy. Every day will be the same for you because nothing will inspirea reaction in youand you might as well be dead.

Agree with the second part. Do not agree at all with the first.

Apathy does NOT bring happiness.

Howeve, you ARE responsible for your own emotions. And unless you are mentally ill. Your emotions are almost entirely YOUR responsibility.

For an argument like yours it's probably best to be very clear if you're gonna make claims like that.

How is that going to give you true happiness. I'm actually curious now. An explanation is in order, if you please.

Indifference doesn't make you happy either.

well revently ive decided that very little of what people (myself until recently) worry about actually matters everyone. just watching the news is enough to make anyone depressed seriously how is a woman getting attacked by a dog newsworthy? why do i hear about the star highschool student that died in a car accident but not all of the thousands of ppl that die in car crashes? a woman was raped in Iraq. yes these are all horrible things, but in what way do they affect me? they don't. i choose to not let them bother me because there are people in the world whose job it is to worry about them. i dont want to take away someones job now do i? im a little facetious but anyway. if you can control your emotions you think more logically and will make better decisions regret fewer things etc. need more clarification/ examples?

Well since happiness is the most primary driving force for living, wouldn't that be easier for all of us if we all plugged some wires into our brains that makes us uncontrollably happy all the time? Doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Mmkay, I see where you're at. I didn't mean to sound like I was trying to bash you at first, if I did.

I have a friend who thinks like you. Indifference to those that are not involved in your life is what you're describing, and it can make things a lot easier emotionally.

I'm not saying that I agree that that will bring happiness though. I'm a caring person and I'm only happy when I can care for and about others. To feel nothing would be hell for me. Good for you if you can be happy that way though.

im not trying to say i dont feel anything. i most certainly do. i and to whoever said being happy all the time is a bad idea i agree. when i say true happiness and indifference i only mean to say that theres no point in dwelling on that which you have no control over. i suppose my religion plays a huge role as well. if you believe (like i do) that this life is really no big deal you can very easily live with yourself. (BTW im catholic in case you're wondering) ps- please spare me the catholic church jokes/criticisms ive heard them and honestly (can you guess it?) dont care lol
