i would strongly suggest against the prius myself for many reasons.

1. it is a bore to drive.

2. it makes you look like a pompous ***.

3. it is counterproductive in that it allows us to hold on to gasoline even longer instead of pursuing true alternative renewable energy. (wind, solar, geothermal, hydro-electic, etc.

but this video i saw pointed out another thing wrong with the prius. it has become just another icon. it's not the best, it's not innovative, it's not the most fuel effecient. it's simply what hollywood chose to popularize.

if i may point out the specific detail that caused me to post this topic.

"but factor in the prius's high sticker price, and it would take more than 400,000 miles of driving to make your money back EVEN IF gas shoots up to 5$ a gallon."

(This is comparing the prius to honda's insight)

so i guess what i'm trying to say is don't buy into all this hype.

the best way still to ecomodd is to get that 1985 geo metro that you wouldn't have in a century.

if all you really cared about was fuel effeciency, you would have an older lighter car, such as an audi 4000 or an old toyota tercel or something.

I'd say I wouldn't buy a Prius because it's ****ing uncomfortable to drive in. My mom has one and it's always a chore to drive it when I have to.

If only diesels were as popular in the US as they are in Europe. Nothing like having a turbo-charged engine that gets 48 mpg!

So is your major issue that the car is popular? I don't really care if something is a Hollywood icon or not...

Also hate to break it to you but unless your power company ONLY uses wind, solar, geothermal, or hydro electric ... any electric car you plug in will still be using fossil fuels.

I'd rather see people keep buying those cars so that there is an incentive for car companies to keep developing the technology further. If they don't, they won't make the cars.

I don't mind the hybrid idea, but let me know when they don't look like frickin space pods. They are super lame looking right now. Give me NORMAL cars that don't look like they are from the year 3000 and I will gladly get one.

Making electric or hydrogen cars cheaper and more practical to own is a better way forward than hybrids.

The only way to drive it was to always go as fast as possible. Use the engine as little as possible. My new car is much better.

2. it makes you look like a pompous ***.

but this video i saw pointed out another thing wrong with the prius. it has become just another icon. it's not the best, it's not innovative, it's not the most fuel effecient. it's simply what hollywood chose to popularize.

mistervengeance

Sounds like another Limbaugh talking point to me. :)

I'd say each hybrid purchase is a signal to the car manufactureres and Big Oil execs than we want to get off fossil fuels. So hybrids are OK with me.

but wouldn't you say it's the other way around? hybrids are another excuse which allows americans to stick to fossil fuels because they believe they're being green. people will stick to hybrids and gasoline and fossil fuels longer now, rather than move on to real renewable energy. this is the point i'm trying to make. hybrids in a way are adding to our oil addiction

I think you've missed the point of why people buy hybrids...

1. Who buys a Prius because it's a fun car to drive? I don't recall ever seeing anything in ads implying such so I doubt people buying the car want it because it "Looks like it's gunna be fun to drive!"

2. This thread makes you look like a whiny bastard that gets so bent out of shape over other people's choices in cars that you feel the need to lash out at them anonymously on the Internet. Works both ways...

3. Assuming you don't have access to purchasing an electric car or convert a car to bio-diesel, the Prius is probably your closet you'll come to(at the moment) to reducing your oil consumption. Assuming people are really serious about trying to save the environment, I imagine they have already invested elsewhere in their life to reducing their impact on the world.

Everyone I've talked to about hybrids doesn't buy them because they think they'll save tons of money, they do it because they want to reduce the amount of pollution they put into the air. I've yet to meet someone that has a hybrid that complained about the high sticker price. Yes, some people get sucked into the whole "uses less gas, more money in my wallet" train of thought but I hardly repersents the majority of hybrid owners. Furthermore, who the hell would buy an older model compact that has high miles, lacks modern features and probably isn't in that great of shape.

I would agree with you if Prius/hybrid owners were choosing those cars over (for example) electric cars.

Since there are no electric-only cars readily available like hybrids, your "point" seems to me like nothing more than the typical right-wing anti-environmental rant, especially withthe "pompous dork" remark.

The whole point of buying a hybrid is to use less gas, which they do.
