According to the imdb, the first time these two films went head to head, Alvin came out on top with 20 million compared to Avatar's 16 million..

Yeah but its the first time these two movies have come head to head. So it must have knocked it off its top position at the box office.

that's really sad. an abomination of a film that no doubt is making Ross Bagdasarian roll over in his grave is winning. that's worse than meet the spartans being number 1 when it came out.

Are you kidding me, all of you people are ignorant... Go see the movie before you judge it, this is James Cameron were talking about. I'm sure your too young to appreciate the quality of movies he makes and has made, avatar is a very good film, not great, but good. One of the few films with a high budget that was pulled off right, so please dont judge things so ignorantly.

Too young? The guy makes blockbusters that would mostly appeal to 15 year old boys.

They're not exactly highly intellectual arthouse pictures.

Exactly.

The holiday season is a HUGE time for movie theaters. Along with that, people are with there families, so they want to see family friendly movies (for families that still have young kids). I would not feel comfortable taking my 5 year old to see Avatar, but would not have to worry about Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Not surprising at all.

Have you even seen it? The movie is excellent and is only 20 million away from hitting 400 million worldwide. It will probably hit that number by today and then some. Its not even the weekend yet. :| This movie is no flop.

Yup, I mean Titanic appeals to 15 year old boys right??? And sure there not the most *Highly intellectual arthouse pictures*, but there is something more to the films than you think. His scripts dont typically yell out their meanings to you, they are too smart.

I grew up on Aliens, True Lies, Terminator and Terminator 2. I hated Titanic and find James Cameron to have been heavily overrated for a while now... especially considering he's done absolutely nothing (in terms of creative writing) for over a decade. A new movie of his comes out and half the budget is spent on advertising and hype. If $300 million only buys "good" for an acclaimed director like James Cameron... I'd hate to have to know how much it would cost to buy "superb."

No need for insults either. Just because I find all the hype surrounding what looks like to me, just another action film that I don't feel like spending $10 to see, doesn't make me "ignorant." I may disagree with you, but there is no need to call me names.

Too smart! You're quite right!! It took me hours of research, complete with a candle wick, in the great depths of the University library to unravel the powerful subtext relating to Colonial America, the ill-treatment of Native people and neglected nature of war vetereans!

Why only James Cameron could implemented such suble findings in his film!!

Almost as powerful and moving as the philosophical and political ideologies to be found in his masterpiece True Lies!!!

Like I said the story is not an in your face type of thing. It sends its message passively, could you tell that the Navi were purposely resembling the native americans?? An Anti War message springs to place. And to foxhound, ignorant is not a name its a description. And you still can't back up anything you have said because of one simply fact, you havent even seen the movie.

Calling me "ignorant" is an insult. You purposefully choose the word to condescend towards me. I know more than enough about the film to know that it isn't the greatest thing ever made and not worth spending $10 on. Obviously, it hasn't received universal praise so my sceptical nature isn't entirely unfounded.

I understood the message completely, I'm not an idiot. The story sucked for using recycled cliches, an awful main character, and Cameron shoving down his very apparent message down my throat. Like I said, fun movie to watch, but awful story.

titanic is the most influential film in recent cinema history, and is worshipped around the globe, it succeed to the point that what the film critics say is no longer important, I personally think Titanic is one of the best movie ever created, it's a visual masterpiece that touches all around the globe without language barrier, and that is really what a movie is supposed to do. I did not understand a bit of English when I first view it, but titanic had the power to touch me.

I love the visuals in this movie but the messages in this movie were painfully obvious.

Its completely transparent towards being a depiction of Native Americans.

Some people say its an Anti-War film. Did they miss the last 40 minutes of the movie with that huge battle that involved killing people?

There is a thing called subtlety. This movie does not send out its messages passively because everything is so black and white, defined as purely good or evil.

Its about as subtle as a sledge hammer.

Actually, he's got a point. At least in a lot of places, it's becoming more and more common that the huge blockbusters are the only movies that get shown. It's annoying when you are looking to find a smaller movie. Then you see that it's not showing on a single screen in your city, while something like Avatar is playing on 50 different screens.

I'm not comfortable with actually rooting for Avatar to fail, but its success is a sad sign of the movie industry. The fact that this movie cost such a ridiculous amount of money to make means that it HAS to get shown on a lot of screens. And that's gonna make it harder for a smaller movie to get shown. And things get skewn even more towards the huge blockbuster movie.

Avatar really is only just worth watching for the 3-D Imax experience.

I disagree. I seen it in 2D and loved it.

A large part of its 237 million dollars budget was spent on technologies that are already licensed by others. It's not just money sunk into a single movie. Go complain about Spiderman 3 or 2012 regarding budget, not Avatar.
