A 111 gigapixel image is indeed an impressive number. But all that really does is allow one to zoom in a whole lot. At that point, it just becomes a game of "Where's Waldo". Which I personally think is just a tad bit goofy. After all, how often do you actually look at pictures under an electron microscope? That's "pixel peeping" taken to its ridiculous extreme. There's actually a reason to examine photographs up close, but the ability to zoom in really close typically isn't the whole freaking point.
In this case, people are drooling over the fact that they can zoom in like, 10,000% and see a blurry ass guy wearing a blurry ass t-shirt. You'd might as well take a 20mp image from your own digital camera, zoom in 500% and then drool over how that dark blurry blob is totally recognizable as a cockroach. In any case, the extreme zoom-ins still look like total crap. So why even bother when at normal viewing distances, the ENTIRE PICTURE looks identical regardless? The only way it makes any difference whatsoever is if you're peeping at pixels (and thus cropping out nearly the entire picture from your field of view), or if you just really want to cater to the (nonexistant) audience who generally demands the ability to zoom in 10,000% whenever they look at a picture.
Now don't get me wrong...this picture was created for a SPECIFIC purpose and it does what it set out to do. I'm just saying that what it intends to do is a tad bit goofy from any aspect other than that of the person who cares about the tech more than they care about the content.
More to the point...this is sort of a sad inevitability of the sad "megapixel race" which has been going on for years. People saying that this picture is great because you can zoom in a lot is just sort of a sad validation that camera manufacturers have managed to convince the general public that technology is more important than technique and vision. It a sad validation of current manufacturer's strategies of pushing forth new cameras on the the basis that more pixels will mean better pictures. It's a sad validation of the idea that the 5x7 inch view camera photographer is better than the 35mm SLR photographer (or the 18 megapixel DSLR owner being a better photographer than the 10 megapixel DSLR owner) just because one produces higher resolution pictures. And that's just technological fluffery which reinforces the idea that you need to buy the newest and best **** if you want better pictures. It's a sad validation that people really ARE more concerned with technology more than stuff like composition and technique.
Sure...there might be a naked lady somewhere in there. But a photographer who WANTED a naked lady in his picture could do better with a freaking 4 megapixel cell phone camera.
