well..in stand up comedy, american. i watched a uk comic once and i could only relate so much to what he was talking about because i do not live in the UK. but some of what he said was funny. so i guess it depends on where you're from.

"them UK people" lmao I like both for the most part. The US has the worst so-called comedy sitcoms, though.

The sarcastic and nonsensical humor of Americans is better than British humor imo.

But UK humor will always be great.

I find most British humour to be funnier, most of the time when I see American comedy shows/films/stand uppers on telly, they're not really funny, they just make unintelligent jokes. This is not to say Americans are stupid, please don't think that, but I think it's just a poor choice of shows that the Danish media tend to make, instead of buying the rights for good stuff.

Indeed. Irony and sarcasm is pretty much a universal language, despite how much I feel that most american comedians fail at it, you can still appreciate it if you're not british. It's really a shame though, because some of the funniest comedians (to me) are Danish and you can't translate half of the jokes, the sarcasm or the wordplays into English. It makes me sad, because we're a really funny people and I wish I could share it

I prefer UK humour, it's more intelligently produced.

I like The Simpsons and Scrubs but that's about it.

I'm not American :| I'm talking about the best of the best mah friend, like daily show, conan, and a few stand ups. UK humour just has some really memorable things like blackadder, mr.bean, the thin blue line and Allo Allo, and stand up of course. I think, as you've said, your country hasn't chosen the right stuff. :P

Yeah John Stewart is great but I was referring to American sitcoms which, for the most part, are tragically awful

Both have its great representatives like Bill Hicks for the US and Monty Python for the UK but in the end the UK takes the cake for brilliant masterpieces like Monty Python and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

British sitcoms tend to be less generic, though that dosn't make them better, there are great and terrible British sitcoms, American ones tend to be just average. British standup comedians are pretty much all leagues above American ones, far too many of them rely on sterotypes and a lot of the political ones seem to just say "Bush was dumb" and leave it at that.

Considering both american and british humor is varied, both.

For instance, Shows like Everybody loves Raymond, Reba, Drew Carrey show, Full House, Coach, I don't find particulary funny among the american humor shows, however I do find shows like Big Bang Theory, Fresh prince of Bel-air, Seinfeld, King of Queens, The Simpsons, Family Guy, quite funny.

As for british humor, Monty pytons flying circus has on rare occassions made me chuckle, The young ones haven't really made me laugh, however Mr. Bean, Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, Allò Allò, Keeping up apperances, I do find quite funny.

People only think that British people are naturally smarter because their accents. But they can't annunciate! So why call them smarter?

Row up dem biscuits air en pu' em ona shelf yea?

Like wtf are you making noise about? No one understands you...

ANYWAY, after Two And A Half Men became super popular, British comedy wins by default.

The Office BBC

Extras

Mighty Boosh

Da Ali G Show

Garth Marenghis Darkplace

Peep Show

Ricky Gervais Show (HBO)

Spaced

Those are what I consider the best UK comedy shows, in no particular order.

The Office on NBC (first 3 seasons)

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job (first 3 seasons)

Space Ghost Coast to Coast

Aqua Teen Hunger Force (first few seasons)

Mystery Science Theater 3000

Arrested Development

Eastbound & Down

Those are what I consider the best American comedy shows, in no particular order. I Can't Choose!!!!

BBC Office beats the NBC version. It's obvious why these two are compared, and the original is where all the genious really is.

Extras beats Curb. Gervais has talked about how Curb has influenced him, and IMO he bested Larry David.

Mighty Boosh loses to Tim and Eric. Two really weird psychedelic comedy shows, Tim and Eric are (were?) the masters though.

Ali G loses to Space Ghost. Two interview shows where the guest has no idea what they are in for. Space Ghost is so quotable though.

The rest are too different to compare.

American humor- I AM GONNA DO SOMETHING SO STUPID THATS NOT FUNNY BUT I HAVE A LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE SO YOU HAVE TO LAUGH!
British humor- I am gonna tell a funny joke, but do it in such a dry, emotionless, way that it sucks all the humor right out of it.

I liked Lock Stock and Snatch a lot, but outside of those, I'm pretty much all for American humor. It's not a national pride thing, but more of a cultural thing. I can't relate as well to British situational humor or contexts as I can to things I see or have heard of. For instance, my favorite comedies are Big Bang, Eureka, Blue Mountain State, and Rules of Engagement. They're all from the U.S., but I found Coupling from England to have its moments. Like a better version of Friends.

I like how he picks out a Cockney dialect and uses that to represent all English speakers. What about the other major proportion of people that speak the traditional proper accent?

Well I'd probably choose UK humour since I'm British and all and biased. Though both nations have produced comedy that has both left me cold and made me bellow with laughter. I like a tasty sarcastic twinge so anything that hits that nail on the head will do. I think UK comedy relies on sarcasm more frequently.

While we're on the topic of british and american comedies, I thought of one joke each of the 2 countries has overdone (idk if anyone else has noticed this)

in american comedies this ALWAYS gets a laugh and idk why: *cough* "Furball, yuck!"

why is that funny? why do we feel compelled to laugh at this? I don't find it funny, do you?

In British comedies they have really overused this joke: *Clive gives exhilarating speech about a task he is about to persue, enters the door that is behind him and slams it shut. Then there is a pause.* "That's the closet, Clive"

I've seen it done so many times, what's with that?

British Comedy by far in my opinion,

Just look at argueable the King of Comedy Ricky Gervais,

I dont think there has ever been a stand up comedian or comedian in general with as much guts and bravery as him, just look at the Golden Globes this year that was hilarious and by far extremely brave.

Why does everyone love him so much? He's pretty boring. I mean, he's made me laugh, but he's very average. Probably the most overrated thing in comedy.

It's hard to pinpoint what *exactly* American humour is, since there it's such wide sprectrum. Especially when you've got Arrested Development (my ultimate favourite) which manages to be outrageous and over the top yet subtle/dry at the same time. On hand, I'm going to say I like American humour more, just due to the comedies I tune into (Parks and Rec, Eastbound and Down, Modern Family...) but the Ricky Gervais show is pretty damn good. And from what I've seen of his standup I thought it was really funny.

Wow. People on OT really are touchy. Look, I understand his jokes, they're just extremely dry to the point where it's not funny. He prides himself on being smarter than everyone else with his little quips and "witty" observations. Plus he's kind of a jerk, look him up on YouTube interacting with some fans. Anyway you don't need to get on me for that post that was obviously a joke. No one is that close-minded...

British humor is the best, I'm sure the britain's worst comedian or comedy show will still be better than most of the American comedies out.

I never got UK comedy. I watched Monty Python and nothing made me chuckle, or even crack a smile. The sarcasm and irony just seems too easy and predictable at times. Some people find it genius. I find it lazy.

I like the American stuff a litle more...but i can see why people do not like American TV. Some of these top rated comedies are terrible particulary the CBS stuff. King of Queens is garbage, if I get stuck watching it I just sit there and wonder who would ever believe that fat loser could get that woman. Two and a half men is beyond stupid bottom of the barrel nonsense that I just can't believe is popular.

I do like the Office (yes I know it's a remake of a british show, but having seen thier version I think it is terrible, not a fan of Gervais)but I haven't watched it in years and Parks and Recreation was pretty good when I caught it on Netflix. Stil the "tops" in American comedy for me are the Seinfelds, early to mid Simpsons, and Arrested Devolpment. Nothing I have caught on BBC or the other channels that show British based comedies comes close.

Forgot to mention that British stand up is also lacking to me. I do like the guy that wears the female clothes/makeup, he's pretty funny, but that's it. I see that new guy Brand and just wonder why so many think English comedy is more refined than the American counterpart.

Monty Python is the only thing I find funny on a regular basis from the British
