Really, I hope you can answer me this one. I was watching it and I didn't like it at all; it was such a pain but I tried and continued until episode 18 and then I dropped it. The anime isn't bad but I don't understand why people like it so much. Can someone explaing me why alot of people like it?

It's just a nice slow anime. It doesn't have a ton of action, it doesn't rely on an overly complex story, and it doesn't have a billion characters that need memorising. I can watch Lucky Star almost anytime, compared to something like Fullmetal Alchemist or Clannad.

There is basically no story besides back story, so you can watch and not have to worry about all the crappy/good elements of a anime; it's like neutral.

Yeah, it is simple but at the same time boring for me. The jokes that are supposed to appear don't appeal to me and the characters are like boring; there isn't any character development. The only thing I like a little is the relationship between Konata and Kagami.

After watching a few episodes, I concluded that the show is popular because the people who watch it can relate to the characters (Mainly blue-haired Wendee Lee) or it's very abundant in modern Japanese-lifestyle, but that just me and I haven't seen an episode of that in months...

I watched 9 episodes or so and I can understand why it is so popular in Japan. It features an anime gaming nerd as a main character who is on top of that extremely moe. The whole Anime is extremely moe. Bind these 2 facts and some jokes which only 50 % of the non-japanese audience will get together and you got your top otaku anime. But you also shouldn't miss on the sexual references, so you can get a ton of hentai out of this.

I didn't like Lucky Star that much. It's meant to be funny but I found myself not laughing way too often. The drawing style is cute and the main character is something special (and she reminds me a bit of my nerdyness :3), but all in all it simply can't compare to comedy kings like School Rumble, Full Metal Panic or Gintama (it's also very hard to get all the jokes here, but the comedy is on a whole different level).

Yeah, Konata is the only character that alot of people here in Gamespot may relate and perhaps Kagami (both love videogames) but after all, I think only the japanese love more the anime than in the western.

I have seen 20 episodes so far so I am nearing the end of the series. I like the show alot but I really could not tell you exactly why. I love the japanese culture and anything that shows that is something I will enjoy regardless of plot. Of course this show does not have much of a plot but o well.

Same. I though it was boring and unfunny.

It's not that I dislike comedy or even parody anime ('Hayate no Gotoku' is great, for example) ..it's just that Lucky Star is..well..bland. Never understood why so many people like it.

Lucky Star is average. I liked Azumanga Daioh better.ghoklebutter

Yeah, certainly better imo, but I wasn't a big on Azumanga either.

T_P_O

Good call..wish I had dropped it at that point.

I continued despite the terrible first episode. It improves marginally, but it was still well in the zone of "boring" when I dropped it (can't recall how far I was.)

It's a hit or miss anime. Some people are attracted to the art style and non-existent story. Plus like a user above said, most of it is references to other anime or lifestyles found in Japan, so Western viewers won't understand some of the jokes. And definitely if you hated the first 2 episodes, you won't enjoy watching the whole series.

I thought it was cute and I didn't have to concentrate much to watch it :) It didn't hold my interest for more than a few episodes but it's something I could just tune into every so often

I dunno, I honestly think the first episode was the weakest. That talk about the chocolate cornet went on far too long.

it's subjective. For some people mediocore to you is great to them and vice versa. There's no right or wrong answer on what is good or not.

Eh..I wouldn't say that. I wouldn't compare Lucky Star to Minami-ke, either. I understand how they're similar in format (though there are some differences there), but Minami-ke is a much more enjoyable show. Better characters, dialogue, more interesting situations..probably fewer attempts at "humor" ..yet it still manages to be much more amusing.

I'll second your recommendation, though. Loved each season.

People like it because:

  • Has underage school girls
  • Drawn in a very moe fashion
  • Very unique OP song + dance
  • Konata - female otaku that most viewers can relate to in terms of personality
  • Includes a ton of otaku fetishes

I think its pretty bad as a series by itself though.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt considering you've got a Clannad avatar and After Story is your favourite ever (want proof of my love for Clannad? bam!)

Anyway, it's just an enjoyable show with a lot of inside humor if you are well versed in the world of Anime. Perhaps Azumanga Daioh is up your alley for SoL? Or even K-On!.

Although from the recent earnings reports and what not, it seems like the industry realizes that moe is over saturated, and might be on it's way out. Good riddance too.

Lucky Star is so famous because first of all, it's created by my most favorite anime dev, Kyoto Animation, who've produced

Haruhi Suzumiya, Air TV, Kanon 2006, PRIOR to lucky star comming out. and now, clannad as well but.

so, 1. lucky star was created by one of most beloved anime dev, so widely publicized.

2. it satisfies otaku very much. all those lolicon lovers = lucky star = heaven

I think it's because the series is just flat-out wacky. Also I think no one needs to watch every single episode to appreciate the humor. Parodies are also fan pleasers.

It's like Keroro with cute schoolgirls.
