It may have been a good idea. But after 2013, the whole part of north american continent just have pillow worship and masturbates, drawing out the most pathetic part of humanity into this bad toxic environment. This is not to say i am anti comedy.

In either case, what i love is this more conservative guy Hayao Miyazaki hates the anime industry due to Otakus who dont care to actually study real people, and that the over-sexualization of underaged girls is something that bothers him. A sane person!!! And how did the anime community react? Well they called him a reactionary old trash and other mean spirited stuff..

This is what garbage does to you, it makes you lose respect for real effort, or actually care about humanity in general. Thats why fans of anime are 90% losers.

It sounds like he's complaining that anime is made by Otaku, rather than just watched by Otaku.

And to be honest, I think there's something to it. The way people act in anime is governed more by tropes than by observation of real people. I mean, think about it. How many "tsunderes" do you know in real life? Maybe one? I've never met one myself. How many "kuuderes"? Probably none. It only makes sense to compare those character to other anime characters, because there's no analogue in real life.

Even the more true-to-life tropes have a tendency to dominate characters more than they do real people.

Think about it, In a lot of popular anime (particularly moe stuff), you can pidgeonhole most of the characters into an archetype, or in some cases a twist on an archetype. And sure, there are some people in real life who you can give an archetype to, but by and large even those people won't fit it all that well, because real people tend to be more complicated than that

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of anime myself, I'm an Otaku in case you didn't know. I love moe shows. The formulas work for me. The fact that moe shows tend to be full of references to other moe shows works for me, for whatever reason. But on the other hand, the truly stand out shows are the ones where the characters act like real people (and yes, there are some moe shows where this is the case, although they're comparatively rare).

Take something like Stand Alone Complex. Sure, there are character tropes, but the characters aren't dominated by those tropes. There isn't that temptation to label all of the characters, because they just don't categorize that well, and that is a sign of good characterization. Contrast that with, say, your average harem show, and there's just no comparison.

Anyway, my point is, a lot of anime really is just made by anime geeks for anime geeks. In absence of known anime tropes, it would just seem really weird and nonsensical; whether you can understand the plot rests very heavily on how much similar anime you've seen in the past. It doesn't really stand on it's own, and I can see where that might bother someone like Miyazaki.

Tsundere is such a dumb word. It doesn't exist. What people means is a thing called emotion, anger is normal if you have hurt or angered someone. This thing called tsundere is just for losers who fetishizes over people being in anger mood.

the important thing to remember is, at the end of the day, they're just cartoons. And the more serious you take them, the more laughable you become.

With that said, I do have a great appreciation for animation, anime, cartoons, comics, and all that stuff...I'm just saying c'mon people, if some people are trying to ruin your craft, it's totally within your power whether they actually do or do not ruin your craft.

Anime is awesome, but there are some anime that are full of shit and weird in which I can acknowledge Miyazaki's views.

I watched a video where Miyazaki says "Otakus don't ever learn anything". That was quite harsh.

Who's the main target audience for these anime shows?

Except there are many different forms of anime...not just Hayao Miyazaki ones. Was he trying to dictate where anime goes?... I don't watch certain animes..especially the ecchi mechs ones, harem ones which are usually ecchi etc...that doesn't mean I am gonna prevent someone or anyone else from watching it. :P

The anime industry has become like Hollywood. Like 90% of it is useless crap but the other 10% is worthy.

no the topic is all right, it's just disappointing to not see Miyazaki sticking to his guns, or maybe something is being lost in translation or tone? What he really should be saying is "**** y'all, you ruined anime, not me, go masturbate to your half-animal, half-child, half-angel-demon-whatever cartoon porn, you creeps; me and the rest of the industry are going to keep making legit art".

I'd like to see him make a movie that more or less is social commentary on the cliches and stereotypes of the aspects of the industry he hates. I imagine it would get pretty dark :)

This post hits all the points perfectly. It is a pretty great post. I'd also like to add to it that all of this cyclical. The abundance of ecchi and moe tropes are just a trend. Anime goes through trends every 10 years or so. This is just the latest one.

Like another poster said. This is just like Hollywood or any other media-making industry. It is the same, in that 90% of everything made is just pure unadulterated crap.

@jorzorz: Why would you call your teacher senpai? That is definitely weird unless you are trying to hit on them in a weird way. You should call them sensei.

Sturgeon's law: "ninety percent of everything is crap"

This is true for anime, and Hollywood, and video games, and almost every other entertainment industry.

There is no mistake. This is the nature of the entertainment business, where most products are designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I don't see anime fans that are out of control everywhere on the streets. Yeah they get really into their cosplay and stuff like that, but I think the crazies are in the minority. And those crazies probably keep mostly to themselves anyway.

I have enjoyed some anime over the years, but I think the thing is I will always be more interested in the anime from my generation than the stuff out now. I haven't actually sat and really deeply watched a lot of anime from the 80s/90s/early 2000's anyway, so I wouldn't mind getting into some great anime that already exists. I have been meaning to check out a couple of newer ones, like Attack on Titan and One-Punch Man. But I think I'll always be more interested in the classics I grew up with.

@frenud02: Totally agree. I've never known a "normal" person by any meaning of that word who was into anime.
