I finally braved the crowds and saw Avatar today. The tech behind the show was amazing, but in an understated kind of way. Sure there were lots of shots that showed off what the 3D could do, but there was none of the usual in your face kind of 3D. The last thing I need is a projectile flying into my face to remind me that this is a 3D movie. This 3D was used to give the movie depth. It was as if I was actually sitting where the camera was, watching the action with my own eyes.

None of this means anything if there wasn't a story though, and Cameron delivered there too. Sure, it's basically "Dances with Wolves" in space, but Cameron makes it work. He spends a lot of time building up the characters. By the time the humans make their push on the Navi, I had come to know them and I cared for their plight.

Finally, if it's action that you're looking for, Cameron doesn't disappoint on this front either. The fight between the humans and Navi is pretty intense. I'm sure that the fact that I sympathised with the Navi made it feel even more intense.

I just heard on the BBC, that Avatar is the fastest movie to $1 Billion. I know I'll be getting the DVD when it comes out.

I'm suprised OT didn't have one of those sticky threads for this film like they did for other popular blockbusters. Anyone, I liked it a lot.

Excellent movie. I was hearing on the news this morning that the movie has hit the 1 billion dollar mark in revenue.

can we stop with the avatar topics, honestly it's the same thing over and over again. The movie was good but it's not worthy of 50 topics in the course of a week. Can we atleast just sticky this one with the hope that no other topics will be created wasting more space on the front page of the board?

Thats what I liked about the 3D in this movie... There is no shrapnel flying at the screen or nothing to make it pop out like those other 3d movies.

I nearly choked on my pop when you said awesome characters, that was easily the worst thing about Avatar, I couldn't are less about the characters and the character development was horrendous.

I nearly choked on my pepsi when you said horrible characters, that was easily the best thing about Avatar, I couldn't care more about the characters and the character development was truly amazing.

The only person that 'developed' was the main character when he fell in love with the girl and decided to stay in Pandora. And, anyone who has ever seem a movie before could see that happening from a mile away. The aliens were just Native American rehashes from any given film about American Indians, and the military and corporate antagonists were as one-dimensional as movie characters get.

As did I. People complain too much when comparing it to other films. Chances are, if you like it, it's been done before.

Be prepared to find out how lame this movie is without the 3D effects....

See, unlike other films that blew us away with Special Effects, ie Lord of the Rings, Avatar is just a nice gloss of paint with mediocrity...

I'm really curious about the "home" experience with Avatar. I'm convinced that at least 80% of its splendour comes from viewing it in the theatre and since the story is so "bleh", I can't see the superficial elements holding up on DVD/Blu Ray.

I think that peer-reviewed studies have shown that 83% of Avatar's splendor comes from viewing it in the theatre. So, you were close. :P
