To start off, I'm white. I prefer music of most every classification. I have quite a collection of Hip-Hop, Varieties of Rock, some old time Country, a bit of Classical, maybe a Hint of R&B, little bit of Motown, Techno-styles of all sorts and plenty more.

Most white folks my age usually have atleast half of my music list - mostly Hip Hop, Rock, Pop and probably some R&B.

My point is, most white folks, also Asians and Latins that I've ever known - share my variety of music preferences.

Trying to be as delicate as I can, I don't know of many Black People - possible a rare couple - that listen to anything else other than African-American Derived music. Primarily - Hip Hop, R&B, etc... Why not any other variety?

Never have I seen a black person listen to .. Say . .. Metallica, Enya, George Jones...

Further, I suppose this could be my lack of aquaintances of black folks? Im sure there are some African Americans that listen to a broad spectrum of music, not many. And I'm sure some blacks think the same about whites or other races, with thier musci tastes..?

So how bout it? Is there any truth to Black people not really in to other than Black cultural music?

I knew one black guy that I would always run into at every rock/metal show that I went to. Always. That said, I go to a lot of indie/alternative shows in predominantly black areas of DC, and yes, it is often a room full of 1000 white people.

Right - if you were to YouTube 50cent Live or any other popular Rap Artists - you'd see plenty of white folks...Now - if you were to YouTube TooL or Garth Brooks - Good Luck even finding one Black person..Probably not many other races either?

I think that it is more cultual, less racial...how you were raised, friends, commuinity etc. I am at least 4 races that I know of and my preferences have a lot do with my development...obviously can't pin it to a particular race ;)

Depends where you live i lived in CT. before moving to NYC and in CT. (connecticut) there was plenty of latino and black people who liked rock of all type. Not really in NYC, so i guess it is where you live.

I'm in the same boat as you TC, i listen to anything i like, i have my favorites but everyone does.

DMX,Nickelback,Ludacris, and the fray are my favorites.

HUGE generalization...

My band's singer is black, loves metal and classic rock, and I stood in front of two black guys waiting to get into a Nine Inch Nails show.

You are saying that, for the most part, race determines what music you listen to. I am saying it has nothing to do with race/color. I am saying that it comes from how you were raised, your family, your culture, your friends/social groups...those are the things that make you who you are. I am at least 4 races (most Americans are mutts)...you can not pin what I listen to on race...it has to do with the factors I listed.

Im not saying that someone's skin tone determinesa genetic exposition to music - i'm saying that, I feel that Mostblacks arent as diversed to listen to other gernres - IE Rock, country, Folk, Classical, easy listening - etc..

Must be miscommunication then...which happens when people have to be PC on a site like this But it sounds to me like you are saying that Black people listen to Black music because they are Black...which I disagre with (I think that a white person would be the same if raised in the exact same situation) But if you are not saying that, then I appologize...miscommunication

I'm sorry to say - that I was raised in a prodominately racist environment - Missouri..Mostly my family - Father and grandparents.

But---I went to a well diversed school of Blacks and Whites. Rap/hip-hop was really blowin up back then, and most of us really liked it. Bel Biv Devoe, Ghetto Boys, Ice Cube, - - so on. . .My point here is, even though I would go home and hear the N word every time the Cosby Show came on. But I was still a fan of music - regardless of my background.

Now, All of you can nit pick small-tiny disputes of some person you knew back when? Listened to Rock or Country....But, Im sure most black people know what Im talking about wehn I say - Blacks have a cultural preference. I grew up on Honky Tonk and Westerns...I'm not much of a fan of that anymore..If I were, I'd still be listening to Merle Haggard or Don Williams.. I guarantee, that not one black person on this site will have a clue who either of them are.

And there is nothing wrong with this either...Im just curious why blacks don't really like non-black styles of music..?

I'm guilty of this, I only listen to hip-hop. I've tried other genres just so I could say I have diverse musical taste, but nothing else really gets me like hip-hop.

You do know rock & roll is derived of African American music right? If it wasn't for ragtime and the blues, we most likely wouldn't have rock or the genre dervied from it, metal. Therefore, from your point of view, African Americans should have no problem with listening to it because it is derived from their race's musical accomplishments. So either many African Americans do indeed listen to genres like rock and you haven't noticed, or your theory is completely false. It doesn't matter what your race is, what matters is where you grew up, how you were raised, and who you spent time with.

Dawg-WOW, Hey thanks for that History lesson!!! I never new Elvis adopted his music from black folks ! ! !

Why do people think they know something that others dont about this??

What you've just stated about my theory is false about African Americans listen to Rock-due to history is -- well, Goofey. No, blacks don't listen most Rock, nor most country, nor a lot of other things.

I've never mentioned through any of my posts that there's anything wrong with that...It's just an observation. I also couldn't see why a Black person would feel offended what my comments are either? Country singers nor Hard Rock musicians sure wouldn't care if I said - White Rockers don't listen to anything else ! ! That's just obvious...

I used to see some black people at metal shows when I used to go to them back in junior high.
