Not very nice imo, then again neither are insults and abuse hurled at Christians and Jews.

That being said, this is why we have the First Amendment; to protect speech even if, or I should say "especially if" we find it offensive.

And last I checked, these Muslim extremists do have a choice to protest peacefully, or discredit their very message with violence. So instead of attacking the people who are exercising their constitutional right to speech, we instead focus our ridicule on those who use violence to try to suppress it?

How is this good at all? There's a difference between what you are saying and abusing your rights. Insulting Arabs and Muslims is pretty low.OB-47
Are lives, livelihoods or private property being threatened by this ad? No? Then I don't see the problem. An insult is just a word or gesture. Sticks and stones...

That's beside the point. It seems because it's directed at Muslims that you are adopting the "sticks and stones" idea.

I would imagine an advertisement making fun of homosexuals would get your jimmies rustled for example.

Anti Muslim? Are you saying all Muslims are terrorists? Because thats whom this ad is directed against, those who actively commit Jihad.

Not in the slightest. But it would certainly rustle the jimmies of the PC crowd. Depending on the ad, I might find it amusing (I love gay jokes, and have a couple gay friends who tell some of the most offensive ones you'll ever hear). People need to toughen the f*ck up. Until there is a threat against life, health, livelihood or property... something physical, something that can be damaged (feelings don't count), then it's covered by the freedom of speech. I have a really hard time accepting the concept of "hate speech" as well, unless there are tangible threat against those things listed above.

I'm a fan of all sorts of jokes. I usually make jokes about my self first so that people feel comfortable to say anything really. But there is a time and place for everything. And this example doesn't look like the right time and place, regardless of "Freedom of Speech"

eh, just my say.

It is in public. The subway authority (I assume the civil government, or the office they put in charge of handling advertisements on pubic transportation) allowed this ad to be published. If they felt it could cause them legal problems (i.e. libel, or hate-speech inciting violence, damage to property, etc) then I doubt they would have allowed it. My point is that the freedom of speech that we uphold in the West is something "sacred" to our way of life. If Muslims, or any group for that matter, feels "offended" then, under the freedom of speech, they can express themselves, either by reciprocating, indifference, or attempting peaceful dialogue and mutual understanding. How extremist Muslim groups respond is not anything of the sort, and is far outside the context of such ads (or films, satirical comics, artistic exhibits, etc). For it actually violates the rights and freedoms of other people (for f*cks sakes, they get so hysterical, they kill other people around them in riots). Then, you have p*ssy groups coming forward and saying; "We must protect the Muslimz from offense!" Well, no, we don't. Not if it infringes on OUR rights to do so. Muslim extremism is bringing out a lot of interesting people these days, that think the cultural values we hold so near and dear to ourselves and or livelihoods, should just be thrown out because a bunch of hysterical, violent, medieval f*ckwits threaten to kill them. Do you know what we should do? Keep on doing what we are doing, and defend our rights and freedoms as first-world, 21st century nations. Either they can adapt to democracy and the freedom of speech, or they can go live in tents in the desert nailing their pre-pubescent female children. Christianity and Judaism both adapted to change and the advent of science and equality. 'Bout time Islam follows suit.

Well said. Islam really is quite stubborn towards change. I do wish the more normal Muslims in America would attempt peaceful dialogue, but rather they stay silent. And then they let the extremists represent them. It's about time they used FoS wisely to show that there are indeed Islams who are not compelled to strap on a bomb everytime someone doesn't agree with them

BTW for context: I'm Agnostic

Allow me to clarify my statement in the second-to-last paragraph. Throughout my rants about Islam, I merely target the religion as a criticism, and it's extremist, literalist supporters as insult (they deserve only the best). I recognize that there are decent, freedom-loving, moderate, non-literalist, Westernized Muslims out there (and here on GS) that hold onto their religion because they wish to remain part of their cultural heritage, and can easily let go of certain aspects of their faith that are deplorable by modern standards (i.e. Muhammad being referred to as a "beacon of prefect morality" while raping his 9 year-old child-wife) or merely defunct (i.e. clothing requirements that weight heavily against women expressing their individuality/sexuality)... but they have never been, nor ever will be a target for my criticisms and insults. They are a testament to the idea that Islam can adapt and modernize, and give me hope that they soon become the voice and face of Islam around the world... rather than their violent, oppressive, freedom-hating contemporaries. And despite my criticism of the religion, I do recognize there are laudable moral teachings in the text (such as forgiving loans, and encouraging the community to help the poor if they are able). The unfortunate part is that they are often lost among the grand sea of violent, intolerant sludge that is the rest. And even more unfortunately, the theology of the religion (that the Qur'an is the "perfect" and "unchanged" Word of God malarky) will be an imposing roadblock for the modernized religion's future.

Islam is a terrible religion and it needs to be the first religion to be abolished. Followed by the other milder ones.

Shia Islam. they have the leader of the largest shia Islam sec as a part of the government they choose to be Islamic because that way they can have the support of those shia which make up 80% of thier population. People think that Iran is stupid, they master minded the entire middle east. They play on the emotions of everyone and are trying to become the defacto regional super power. Don't talk about Iran they are not Islamic they are power hungry monsters that use everything they have rather well to manipulate the region. If Israel doesn't strike them bey the time the get to the final stages of thier nuke then seriously the entire ME will change. For the worst possible scenario. Arms races, cold war between saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, and Iran. Possibly sparking another gulf war.

there is alot of dislike between the Sunni and Shia, some don't really like to be associated with the Shia (and vice versa) oh and Iran's status as a Shia Muslim state , is very different to Israel's status as a Jewish state, Iran uses it in a purely religious form , and thus has a theocratic form of government, In Israel , the term Jewish state has partly ethnic, and partly religious meanings, so its a democracy with some theocratic elements.

stupid ad, that's only going to alienate the moderates, strengthen those with the opposite view, and preaches to the choir to the demographics who think the situation is purely that.

stupid ad. could cry foul, but i wouldn't.

I would however... if it becomes something all over the place that it's simply acceptable to dehumanize, blindly hatefully attack Muslims/Palestinians/Arabs/whatever.

Because i could post some pics of posters, and books from 1920-1930's Europe about a certain racial/religious group....

but even the loud obnoxious simple-minded black-n-white world lensed borderline (or outright) racist bigotted folks can have a voice too...

OB-47

it's not their fault an extremist wants to blow something up...it's called freedom of speech, like it or not. if you don't want freedom of speech, move to Iran.

That's a pretty stupid thing to say.

Extremists have no logical thinking. Everyone knows they want to blow everything up. Why would you provoke a reaction from them? Do you think the extremists will say "Oh it's freedom of speech it's alright"?

Last I checked the extremists are burning American flags already.. Who gives a fvck what the extremists think in these situations.

Other than the mentally handicrapped babies that are responding to it. We need to get rid of this ad so they stop acting hysterical. All those women interviewed had very annoying tones, the man was more rational. Then again, if this pisses those women off, that is kind of funny.

It's funny when someone posts disagreeing with the ad some other dumbass replies with "FREEDOM OF SPEECH HURRDURR" as if no one knew that.

I am from europe so perhaps my concept of free speech differs from the american one. Is it ok to say something that could result in the death of others and still be covered under 'Free Speach'?

freedom of speech my ass , freedom of speed as long as there is mutual respect , so stop offending people in the name of freedm of speechMAZ85
Nobody has an entitlement to respect. That is a privilege afforded people that deserve it. Your mindset that you (as a Muslim) somehow "deserve" respect of your religion is exactly why we have people discussing anti-blasphemy laws, and undermining the freedom of speech. If you can't take the heat, get out of the fire. A forum (public space) where the freedom to say anything is respected, is not a place to go to expect non-offensive things from being said. The solution to offensive things? Tougher skin and indifference. If you can resist the urge to explode in frustration over what someone says, and just say "whatever" then you will be much better off in life. Respect and the avoidance of offense are not protected rights. But the freedom to say and express one's opinions is. Don't ever get them mixed up. The beauty of the freedom of speech, is that if someone says something you don't like, you can respond without fear of reprisal.

[QUOTE="HoolaHoopMan"][QUOTE="kingkong0124"] it's a privilege to go the White House..you have to be classy when you go somewhere like that. Some things you don't do there. This is similar to how your right to bear arms is violated when you visit the White House....kingkong0124

That's for security reasons. People flicking off a painting poses no such risk. If this is the argument you're going to make I can only lol.

You should be kicked out for flicking off paintings of presidents. It's a privilege to visit the White House, which is my point. They got invited to the White House. Invited. When someone invites you, you don't go and start flicking off random sh*t in their house. Even the Log Cabin Republicans (who are also gay activists) condemned this...

Invited or not it doesn't matter. You're doing nothing but setting a double standard. The White House is the seat for our government that prides itself on freedom of expression, if you want to void that freedom in this one place I can only fvcking laugh at fascist butt holes like yourself. Its hypocrites like you that are an utter embarrassment for our country.

What do you mean? KKK member says "all blacks should die" and one ends up killing a black person? Or are you talking about some kind of indirect connection (i.e. this ad inspires a Muslim extremist to bomb a subway, killing 10 people)? The former is not protected because it is a direct threat to the lives of others. The latter is protected because it does not threaten anyone, and the person who chose a bomb as opposed to a retaliatory ad, or speaking out against it, is wholly responsible.

Did anyone read the ad? It says that jihad supporters are savages and that Israel is not. I think almost all people would agree with one of those points and most people would agree with the other.
