I was never too sure where I should have made this thread, but anyway. I need a new antivirus. I want to know what great antivirus should I get, and if it is better to get just antivirus or just internet security and what are the differences. Thanks.

Most free anti-virus programs, from what I've heard, only prevent and detect viruses. If you actually get them on the computer then there's little it can do to actually remove them. That said, Avast! seems to be the more popular one. I use Norton but thats a bit unreliable (though effective) so I have to manually scan everyone now and then.

Norton All-In-One. May be expensive but has huge advantages.

As long as you stay away from porn-sites and file-sharing/torrent downloadingprograms, you really don't even need anti-virus software.

How much do you want to spend and do you have a real firewall not that microsoft one. Also are you using windows and if so I hope you are on a standard user account unless you are installing programs from a trusted source.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, it seems good, though it's hard to say because I haven't had a virus in years. Just be careful what you do online and you shouldn't even need an anti virus program.

This naivete is why people get viruses. Go on the net for 30 seconds without virus protection and your machine will be infected.

@TC: You will need a program that can both intercept incoming viruses and scrub ones you may already have. Just be aware that the best antivirus will only capture 60% of viruses in the best of cases. Download torrents or browse illicit sites and you will be infected with computer STDs regardless.

Anything but Norton. Try avast or something. But to have a virus would be better than Norton.

I use Prevx 3.0, and I prefer it due to features.

Once installed, it goes through your entire hard drive, and authenticates all executable files (including .DLL files) against a huge database of good/bad files. Once authenticated, it's allowed to execute...and Prevx also detects when one of those files has been updated with a patch (such as Windows files) and will immediately re-authenticate it prior to allowing it to execute.

Prevx protects without needing virus signatures, which means you get full protection without having to wait for new signature files to be made/posted/downloaded.

Yup, and includes a free trial of SafeOnline (which I use to protect Gamespot URLs at the moment). Prevx is only $24.95 per year, and I also like that it has three levels of self-protection against malware that would attempt to do a shutdown of it.

I have McAfee and I've been fine even with my daily porn viewing and torrent download habits. wstfld

I really liked McAfee for years, until it started doing false detections of casual games as "malware".

Couldn't even run a scan because it would delete valid game files.

Went through the whole process of reporting this to McAfee on their reporting website...uploaded files too, and they refused to fix the problem so I uninstalled McAfee and told them to close my account.

I wouldn't go quite that far, but good habits will make AV software nothing more than a reassuring safety net, rather than something that is absolutely integral to your survival out on the internets (as a lot of people perceive it.)

I have used all of these in the past or am currently and they are great 1.Microsoft security essestials - everyone seems to love this 2.Eset nod32 - My favorite 3.AVG free - FREE 4.Zonealarm - Great firewall, but somewhat annoying. HEY CAN FIREFOX ACCESS THE INTERNET?? lol 5.Malwarebytes anti malware 6.Advanced systemcare - some people don't like this. Hit or miss I don't like norton or prevx, but that's just my personal preference
