Due to boredom, I decided to start a Shakespeare thread.

I've seen and read a few of his plays (Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, King Lear, and Twelfth Night). My favorites of the ones I've seen are King Lear and Twelfth Night. Anyone else like Shakespeare? And if so, what's your favorite of his works?

I enjoyed reading MacBeth. Romeo and Juliet less so, but the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio was pretty good.

I'm not particularly familiar with MacBeth. I know the whole plot summary, but I've never seen or read it.

And Romeo and Juliet is probably my least favorite of the ones I'm familiar with.

I love Shakespeare. I took two semesters of an English class dedicated to Shakespeare when I was in University. We read and studied five plays each semester. I've read: Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo and Juliet (my least favorite), Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, All's Well That Ends Well, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Merchant of Venice (one of my favorites), Measure for Measure (Another favorite), Titus Andronicus (his bloodiest play, and a good one), Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night (another favorite), As You Like It, The Tempest...ok, I read a lot...lol. I think there's even a few more than those I listed, and I've seen a production of every single one I've mentioned...plus I've been to his birthplace in Stratford-on-Avon, nice place, the town definitely.

I've read Romeo and Juliet and coherently understood it. This guy makes more esoteric cultural references than Dennis Miller (which ironically sounds like a Dennis Miller joke when phrased like that :P).

I only enjoyed Hamlet myself. I thought the story in that one was actually interesting.

I despise Romeo and Juliet though. I think it is the most overrated turd of a play/story ever written. Completely cheesy and god awful boring....

I think he's a brilliant writer...I just find it hard to enjoy because I have to read the same lines five times to understand them. I'm not too bright. :?

Tragedies brilliant

Histories very good

Comodies oh God no.

Seriously, Shakespeare couldn't wrote a comody to save his life. Much Ado About Nothing is consistently atrocious, despite Shakespeare stealing the plot. I can't be bothered to find a link, but just look it up if you care that much. A Midsummer's Night Dream is alright, but its very much the execption. Don't blame the language barrier; Chaucer is hilarious, yet was writing centuaries earlier than Shakespeare.

Great comedy has lasting appeal. Duck Soup is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen and that came out in the 1930's!

I like Goethe better. Though, Shakespeare was more strictly playwright.

Some of his lesser known plays are pretty good but his more popular ones such as Romeo and Juliet suck.

Also, I don't seem to have any trouble understanding the dialogue.

I was confused as heck though in King Lear, when the Fool just stops being in the play. Aside from that, King Lear is probably my all-time favorite piece of theatre.

And yeah. Romeo and Juliet is way overrated.

I'm not a fan. And yet everyone seems to think of Shakespeare as the greatest play-write. Me no likee.
