Ive heard various cyberbullying stories online and on TV and Im sorry but I dont feel sorry for these people.

They talk about mean messages online and phone calls that make them miserable but its so ridiculous. First if you dont know theyre only doing it to get to you and should be ignored, you have selfesteem issues. Everyone gets teased or made fun in school and such.

Second, it amazes me, in all these stories no one ever mentions CHANGING PHONE NUMBERS or BLOCKING people online. Seriously, there are block/remove/delete buttons on social sites for a reason.

Obviously If things get to the point of personal safety you need to call the police.

Thing is when you are belittled constantly by all your peers it really does get to you. Sure everyone gets bullied in school but in smaller communities it can feel like everyone in the town hates you. It really is an issue :P Plus seeing as anyone anywhere can see anything on the internet it makes it worse because not only are strangers seeing the Cyberbully's content but it's also shared and spread to everyone else the victim knows.

Blocking or changing phone numbers really wouldn't help because then they would just face the torment at school, and it would probably worsen once the bullies realized they have been blocked :P How do I know? I speak from experience I was the biggest loser ever when I was little <3 But at some point you grow up and tell em to screw off xD and suddenly everyone is your friend

HOnestly though ather than press chargers I think measures should be taken to help the victims with their self esteem as that is the root cause of the bullying, the whole feeling sorry for youself so ask mommy for help thing is as stupid as it sounds :P The victims must take matters into their own hands and stop it.

When I was a kid, if you were bullied you could go home to escape it. These days every kid has a cellphone or facebook or whatever, which makes escaping bullies a lot more difficult. Especially when it's so easy to find out someone's phone number even after they've changed it.

I classify cyber bulling like I do racist speech.

Yup. People are so damn sensitive today and probably even a bigger issue is that they don't take matters into their own hands.

It's one of those problems that doesn't sound like an actual problem. Then you start hearing stories about the consequences of that fake sounding problem, and you slowly realize how wrong you were.

The consequences of bullying is on the victims, they can choose to let it affect them or not. In a land where this is freedom of speech (if you live in the US), you have to take the good with the bad, otherwise that prilevage will not last.

I used to get bullied all the time, I did the whole crying to teacher and mommy thing. It made the matters worse. After so many years of it I decided to not take anyone's shi- anymore, suddenly I have friends in every group of the school, while I still get to be my strange self. Until I took it in my own hands to better my social life well life sucked XD Once people understand they can't walk on you, they tend to find another beating post. It's unfortunate it works that way, but people are so insecure that to feel good they must beat up someone else, but it's a part of life we all have to deal with it :P That does NOT mean that it's ok for others to talk down though to insecure people though. I don't know what kids just don't fight, no one is going to bully you if you fight them. Regardless if you lose, people won't bother you if you're more trouble then what you're worth. And if fighting is a no go, just take your clothes off, no one fights a naked man.

Depends.

If it has to do with people you actually know, spreading rumors over the Internet about you, harrassing you etc. , then no.

If you consider getting called a dirty name by some random anon on the Internet "cyber-bullying" then you are pathetic.

I do as well if I think they are actually be bullied bad. Sometimes somebody will get bullied because somebody else is messing with them, not realizing that it is just that persons sense of humor and not meaning any harm, and I'll tell them to stop being sensitive.

I learned this too, sometimes they really are just mindless jokes, but after being put down for years and years, they really can't tell the difference anymore. Sometimes it's best for the person to just come back to reality and realize oh hey all friends call each other Dickfaces :P
And if fighting is a no go, just take your clothes off, no one fights a naked man.Fightingfan

Except cyber bullying leads to the real world, turning someone into a laughing stock who is bullied in real life, or causing them to commit suicide.

So it is a real problem, and treating it like it's a nonexistant problem will just encourage the bullies who do it. For a recent example, there is Amanda Todd, who was stalked and harassed through the internet and eventually killed herself after trying to move away.

It is bullying, so it is a problem. And when it's cyber-bullying, the bully's target can't fight back with a well-deserved suckerpunch to the face or rage-induced piledriver. I had a friend who was constantly bullied til the day he snapped. He pinned the bully down from behind and looped and tightened a leather belt over the bully's neck. Luckily he didn't kill the guy or cause permanent damage, and the bullying did stop after that.

Cyber bullying can be a real problem if it's from people you actually know. Like, say for example, someone manages to get hold of a few particular photos and starts spreading them around. Or if they start spinning some nasty rumours to your friends or whoever. It can be really quite upsetting for a person.

However.....having said that......if anonymous users are trying to give you a hard time, it is extremely easy to just simply ignore them.

@TrainerCeleste, I think changing numbers and blocking would help. You can choose who you give your number too and like I said, online blocks exist for a reason. It may not stop the problem immediately if you know them from school or something but theres no reason to let nasty calls and online messages continue.

I know some people have committed suicide but I still think some self esteem issues played a part. You cant let name calling and such get to you. If its more like stalking and your afraid for your well being, thats different. You need to call the cops.

I know some people have committed suicide but I still think some self esteem issues played a part. You cant let name calling and such get to you. If its more like stalking and your afraid for your well being, thats different. You need to call the cops.

wildcat2000
Well you can of course get rid of it online, but it won't stop in the school environment then. LIke I said people would probably just get more shi- for blocking the people, and to get around a block, all you have to do is make a new account we see bots do it on here all the time :P If someone wants to cyber bully you, it's going to happen :P And yes like we said above it is a big self esteem issue but that doesn't give someone the right to take advantage of it online or in real life.

Ya people can create new accounts and stuff like bots but I still wouldn't just give up and let it continue. Id block everytime.

If people tease you for blocking...comes down to the same thing, ignore them. Like said before, once bullys know they dont bother you they move on cause they know youre not worth the effort.

[QUOTE="TrainerCeleste"][QUOTE="sherman-tank1"]Yup. People are so damn sensitive today and probably even a bigger issue is that they don't take matters into their own hands.

Fightingfan

I stand up for people IRL when I can now, it means the world to some people or at least it did to me when I was at that stage :P

I don't know what kids just don't fight, no one is going to bully you if you fight them. Regardless if you lose, people won't bother you if you're more trouble then what you're worth. And if fighting is a no go, just take your clothes off, no one fights a naked man.

Genius!

Amanda Todd also flashed herself on the internet multiple times and fvcked someone's boyfriend (and that person retaliated), so not a good example to use. How about instead of killing yourself you take responsibility for what you did and wait it out, it wouldn't have lasted.

And I kind of think people that don't think it is a problem are part of the problem.

The problems seems to be taking care of themselves well enough. Wouldn't be too worried.

Obviously If things get to the point of personal safety you need to call the police.

wildcat2000
A lot of it has to do with who doing it a stranger I would put on block list so incoming email goes to the trash folder a co worker or friend I would report to the police if it got big. But really most of time I don't have time to read my e-mail and go month some times with out reading it. A facebook or myspace I would block the person.

[QUOTE="bobcheeseball"]as an ex-Gamespot cyber-bully I am atoning for my sins. its very badsherman-tank1

It is only as bad as the receiver makes it out to be.

If you've been bullied before, and you managed to handle it okay, that's good and more power to you. What you don't seem to understand is that there are people who aren't as able to cope with things being said about/to them. There are people who can't just choose to shrug that shlt off and go about their day.

Having a social life is overrated. It's too bad so few people realize the value of remaining transparent.

[QUOTE="Serraph105"]

It's one of those problems that doesn't sound like an actual problem. Then you start hearing stories about the consequences of that fake sounding problem, and you slowly realize how wrong you were.

sherman-tank1

The consequences of bullying is on the victims, they can choose to let it affect them or not. In a land where this is freedom of speech (if you live in the US), you have to take the good with the bad, otherwise that prilevage will not last.

Comparing bullying with free speech.... just wtf are you on?

Yeah, I also think the whole idea of pressing charges due to non-physical bullying is really stupid.

sherman-tank1

Somebody making you think that they might hit you can be worse than being hit.

The way I see it bullying is entirely psychological... physical violence is a byproduct.
