I don't have the skills to make games, I would like to do work like Michael Pachter does and comment on the economics of the industry because that is my passion. I wouldn't mind marketing either, or even journalism as I can write quite well.

Always. I'm either gonna inherit my family company, or if I decide that I'm not capable enough to know what to do, i'll hand it to my sister and work in the game industry.

Not really, I was looking more into electronic engineering. Seems my kind of thing. I repair ps3s and 360s at my parents' Play N Trade for a small fee. Its a small town so its more of a favor than a service. Im only 17....I think it'll work out for me.

Plus, I would much rather play a game than make it. Have you ever looked at the process to make a video game? It looks a little tedious and monotonous....and its a lot of work. But thats just my opinion.

Well.....I have been wondering if there's any game companies that need voice-overs. Also would like to give a shot at story-writing for video games.

I did consider becoming a character designer at one point in my life. But seeing how competitive the industry probably is now, I didn't bother to pursue it and majored in history instead.

I never considered the idea seriously. I thought about it once or twice, but like singing or acting it's just seemed like a pipe dream, albeit a little easier to obtain. I like playing video games, but making them doesn't appeal to me and would take the fun out of playing them, since it would be a career and not a hobby. I decided to join the armed forces and become a cop instead.

I would love to. I'd like to be a writer. I've got one idea for a game - and all the cutscenes are in opera. Or they would be, if I could get around to writing the blasted thing. I've also got another idea. Not programming or level design or anything like that. Just writing.

Nope, making video games is not the same as playing and it's very tedious and can be also very frustrating. I hope to join something in government after I finish my IR degree.

I'm going to UMass Amherst in the fall, and while I have yet to pick a major, I'm leaning towards Computer Engineering. I also took some basic programming claases in high school. So I don't know, I might become a video programmer some day.

Very nice! That's awesome guys. For those of you who have thought about it or are pursuing it.. what colleges work best for ya? Standardized or tech or specialty? Also for those of you who are just being rude about it.. I just asked haha. I understand supporting your family is important.. but a decent programmer can start at 60K that's a good start! Thanks for the responses guys!

Electrical engineering has notthing to do with repairing things. Its more of, designing circuits and hardware, things of that nature. A high level of math and science love is required as well.

So recently I've decided I wanted to push towards the gaming industry as a career, and with that in mind, I changed my major over to Computer Sciene in the area of programming. Now, another thing I've noticed is that Google is littered with ads for Devry and ITT tech and all those other tech. colleges, and this seems like a marketing suck hole for people trying to get into it all. I've come to you guys to ask if you, or anyone else you may know, has experience in this industry? I want to take the idea seriously and want to pursue it, and I want to make sure that going to Computer Science is a good idea. I also made sure my minor was Graphic design for right now. I can't claim to have done any research on the game development courses offered by DeVry, ITT Tech, etc. In general, I'd be wary of any game development course that didn't require a solid foundation in computer programming as a prerequisite.

I think your current path is the best one: With a major in Computer Science, you'll be able to try your hand at game development and fall back on a more traditional software-engineering career if you find that the game industry isn't to your liking.

Hrm fair enough.. I just didn't know how to get my feet on the ground with the whole idea.. Haven't even thought about where to go.. I start my programming classes this semester.. and hoping to see how that goes.. Wanting to get a solid foundation with that first. I wouldn't enjoy the idea of a tech college based solely on those sort of majors.. because they seem sort of open ended.. and tunneled towards low end jobs.. but maybe I'm wrong! Hopefully I can figure some more info out

I've recently started working towards becoming a composer and/or sound designer for games.

Mainly because music is really the only thing I'm good at. I wish it wasn't, because it makes looking for a job that much harder.

I would strongly recommend against it.... Push aside these notions of working in hi tech facilities for Capcom or Ubisoft. About 90% of game designers go into making these mediocre games from mediocre devs such as:

I thought about it once at some point I guess, but I can't be bothered because I have no desire to learn anything to work my way up to the top. I just want to run my own gaming company--I want my own gaming company with like, "25" to "50" extremely talented people to pay off who will do anything and everything I tell them too within a certain budget. I have lots of ideas, but I can't be bothered with actually learning how to create character models, program, beta test, and all that other mess. All I want is 100% control and support over everything.

I just want to bring the mediocre games I envision into reality for some easy cash.

" Ex: Ok you guys, I want you to create a game for me called explosions for the masses. Guy number 1--at the begining of the game...I want this puppy walking up the street..and then KABOOM!..this building explodes with awesome graphics. Then guy number 2, you're gonna make the sound effects sound all realistic and stuff, and guy number 3, you get me Micheal Bay on the phone for more inspiration, and etc. "

I did think about it, but I have no interest in programming, have no experience in graphic design, and have no experience in project management. That leaves working in the infrastructure of the company, which wouldn't be bad, but there aren't a lot of game studios in TN. :(

Computer Science is good, but you'll need to do extracurricular work as well. You need good samples showing competence with some sort of engine work. I've interviewed at SCEA and Volition, and my lack of polished samples shot me down in both cases.
