Currently I'm in day 4 of kidney stone. The pain is quite astounding, at times leaving you doubled over and throwing up. I haven't eaten in 3 days because of my stomach won't hold anything down, I assume cause of the pain. Has anyone else suffered from this? If so do you have any tips to speed up the process, or how long it can take? I got a doctor's note for 7 days off work but I can't imagine going that long.

And yes, having this was my worst nightmare, I'm terrified of passing it.

No, but I heard if you drink three 32oz Gatorades a day for a while you can get them.

I feel sorry for you my friend. You will get through it strong. My Dad once told me this "It's the most painful experience you will ever have in your life" after he had one. Im sorry to tell you that but you will come out stronger than ever.

Had one last December. Not sure whether I'd rather go through bilateral Achilles tendon tears again or go through those 13 hours of horror again. The pain according to the doctor was the pressure build up inside the kidney, not the passing of it. Once is hit my bladder it zoomed right on out.

Oh god, don't remind me. I feel your pain, man :( I've gone through three of them. Both my parents have had them several times, so I got it from them I suppose. Terrible pain. Just be sure and rest and pee as much as you can as silly as that sounds. That's the way i've passed them.

All I can say is that you need to get rest, drink water, and grit through it, hoping it passes quick. I've been lucky enough to only have 2. Both passed in just under 3 days. Consider yourself lucky. My friend gets kidney stones pretty much every week(albeit smaller, but can get 0-3 a week, taking a few hours or up to a day for each). He's had his kidneys examined and lasered or something to break the stones into smaller, easier to pass shards, but it's pretty much hell for him. He's almost always on some form of painkiller.

For all you guys getting kidney stones, how old are you? I thought it was something only 40+ year olds are at real risk of getting.

Also, so OP has something to visualize the next time he's hunched over:

I never did, but I heard it's very painful. During my sophomore year of high school, a girl in my honors biology had kidney stones. A majority of the people in the high school section knew about it. Granted, it was a new school so there were only freshman and sophomores as well as middle schoolers, but a lot of people knowing? That's rough.

No, but considering that woman say they'd rather go through the pain of childbirth x 10 rather than have another kidney stone, I'd hope to avoid one.

I'm a nurse in an ER, and I can tell you it's the one thing that seems to hurt the most that I've seen so far... I've personnally had kidney stones 3 times, hurt like a *****, but apparently kidney ones are even a bit worse. If you haven't, you need to go to the ER/see your doctor to get some real painkillers (such as morphine, oxycodone or dilaudid), and you need to drink a lot. The more you drink, the more you'll pee, the faster it'll get out. More often than not, doctors recommend that your filter your urine to see if it passes/you catched it... although I'm not sure of the benifit: when it passes, you should be relieved, and it's not like you need to see that thing.

The pain was over after 10 hours or so, but I was given medication for it anyway.

Yeah I've had them a couple of times. The first was when I first moved to Florida, when I was like 23, and I wasn't getting enough fluid intake. That one was the most painful. It felt like someone was jamming a knife into my kidneys over and over. I've also had a couple since then because of a medicine I was put on. It kept drying out my system.

The best advice I can give you is get some good meds. Percocet is your friend with stones. Drink lots of fluids..stuff like cranberry juice and orange juice works wonders. If you can handle it drinking lemon juice seems to do a great job in dissolving stones. If all else fails they can break them up with ultra-sound now. My friend had it done and it's a real quick in office procedure.

To keep them away, just remember drink lots of fluids. Never pass a water fountain without getting a drink even if you are not thirsty yet. The Urologist told me by the time you feel thirsty you are already starting to get dehydrated.

And btw, I've heard that carrot juice is apparently really good for passing stones.

YES!

Worst pain I've ever felt!!! I woke up in the middle of the night with discomfort in my stomach. I thought I just needed to relieve myself in the bathroom. Then I started throwing up. Figuring it was just a stomach virus I tried going back to sleep. But then the pain continued getting worse and I couldn't sleep at all or even lay still. After the pain got worse I went to the bathroom and threw up more. There was no way I could go to sleep with the growing pain in my stomach and I couldn't even lay down, I was standing up and crouching down trying to alleviate the pain. For about 2 hours I was doing this while the pain got worse and I was freaking out, debating whether I should wake up my parents about this.

During those few hours I threw up about 6 times and as the pain got worse I was convinced I was dying, so I finally woke up my parents. They probably thought I was on drugs when I was trying to tell them what was going on, I was shaking from the horrible pain and threw up shortly after waking them. FINALLY they decide to take me to the ER. On the way there I was crying and blacking out because the pain was so unbearable, I had to ask my mom to pull over so I could vomit. I really thought I was dying. When at the ER they gave me a shot of morphine but that didn't help much so they had to give me another full shot! I was at the ER for about 6 hours getting bloodwork and a MRI. The scans didn't show a stone so the doctors figured I passed it while there. The female doctor said kidney stones can be as painful as giving birth and I believe it.

BTW I'm 25, and I believe it's from drinking four lokos almost daily. I definitley stopped after that. Stay away from that crap!

I think mine was from drinking a lot of powerade.

One summer (when I had the kidney stone) I was drinking 2 or 3 blue powerade bottles a day.

I had a big one that required quite a bit of surgery. The pain beforehand stopped me from walking, and I couldn't walk for about two days after the operation. It ended up doing a lot of damage to my kidney, which left me needing even more surgery to fix things. Easily the worst pain I've ever been in.

Sorry to hear dude, get well soon... I never had one in my life thankfully. well, I drink lots of water daily all my life, less soda, I avoid dark soda as much as I can. I drink orange juice mixed 50% water alot too. and once in a while cranberry juice cuz it cleans out your systems. .. In the meantime as everyone said drink lots of water, drink a big jug of it.. just so you pee it all out.

Thankfully I have never had one. I have read that some women think that they can be worse than child birth. :| I still have no idea how Mark Recchi played in 3 playoff games with kidney stones before having them removed on the morning of Game 7. He played that night too.

I've heard that drinking lots of soda and eating a crap diet (like lots of fast food) can cause them. I don't know for sure if that's true though. I never had them I don't think but yeah every person I've talked to who has says the pain is horrible. I've had gallstones, which are pretty sucky and at their worst are supposed to be very comparable to kidney stones. They put me in the hospital a couple of times; one time they mistakenly thought I had food poisoning and jammed two tubes in my nostrils and back down my throat and sucked the contents of my stomach out my nose. The second time I was in pain for a good 36+ hours. Morphine didn't do anything to kill the pain; they had to give me something beyond morphine to diminish the pain (I forget the name of it, but it was some goooood stuff  ). I was actually scheduled to get my gall bladder removed in five days but the trip to the hospital caused the surgery to get pushed up.

I had one once, but nothing as bad as you TC. It was just some mild discomfort, occassinally had some sharp, stabbing pains. I'd rather not have them again, though.
