Just wondering if anyone on OT has any tips on how to reduce jet lag?

In a couple of months I'm flying from Sydney to Los Angeles direct, leaving at 10:00am and arriving at Los Angeles at 6:45am the same day (it's a 14 hour flight). I then have another flight departing Los Angeles at 3:45pm and arriving at Toronto at 11:18pm (another 4 hour, 30 minute flight). It's a total of 18 and a half hours of flights.

Also, on the way home I'm leaving Rome at 5:20pm and arriving at London at 7:00pm (flight duration of 2 hours, 40 minutes), then leaving London at 9:30pm and arriving at Singapore at 5:30pm (Saturday), and again leaving Singapore at 7:55pm and arriving at Syndey at 5:05am (Sunday). It's a total of 25 hours and 10 minutes in the air.

So OT, it would be great if you know anything that might be of use. I've done google searches but I value your input

most important for me is always to force myself onto the new day cycle. you can slowly start doing this even before the flight. so if you're dead tired and it's still somewhere in the afternoon, don't sleep but fight it as long as you can. and if it's night time and you're fully awake, just rest with your eyes closed, don't get up and do something.

Alter your sleep cycle to a point where you would be waking up a comfortable time before you leave, enough time to get dressed, grab something to eat, drive there, etc. I did this during a trip to Japan a few years ago, and after one night sleep there, no jet lag at all.

Sleep deprivation is the best way to acclimate quickly going from the west to east because you will be able to fall asleep when you need to in the new timezone. Going from east to west isn't quite as hard on the body because staying up later is usually easier than going to bed early. Our body's circadian rhythm is partially based on sunlight and other external zeitgebers, so make sure when you get up in the new timezone you see sunlight so the body can start calibrating to a new timezone.

Unfortunately there isn't really a way to negate jet lag. Some people might adjust better than others but the general rule of thumb when traveling more than 1 time zone away is 1 day of acclimation per hour of difference, sleep deprivation and sunlight can reduce this amount, but your body will not enjoy the changes.

Try to switch to local time as much as possible. So if for you LAX flight I would try to sleep only during the second half of the flight. Once on the ground I would try to get sunlight to ensure that my body thought it was daytime. Also don't drink too much booze.

I thought that was Jet lag...

Googled it.

Can someone explain this ****?

"Jet lag, medically referred to asdesynchronosis, is aphysiologicalcondition which results from alterations to the body'scircadian rhythmsresulting from rapid long-distance transmeridian (east–west or west–east) travel on a jet airplane."

Once in a while, my job would require me to change shifts and thats changing hours. The only way to help is stay awake until the time you need to go to sleep to yourself use to that pattern. Also I recommend you stand up every two hours on your flight, just use the the bathroom if you dont need to. Sitting in your seat for 14 hours can be very hazardous for your health.

Extra rest, make sure you are hydrated, and make sure you aren't running on just caffeine and carbs.
