I've had blood drawn numerous times... more than the average person, but I passed out for the first time. She stuck me once in my left arm but blood was coming out super slow which she was commenting on so I looked at it and told her to stick my other arm. That arm went fine but I started feeling really woozy then I fainted for a second before they started waking me up and all that. I was sweating a lot and they told me I was super pale and I had to lay down and felt dizzy for about 10 minutes then all was well. They gave me a nice juicebox at least.

Anyone else ever had this happen? Why exactly do people pass out when getting blood drawn? I'm assuming for me it was because I looked at the needle which I never do.

I've had blood taken on quite a few occasions, myself. Never passed out. And I almost always looked at the needle and watched vials fill up.

I had blood drawn weekly for about two years and I never had this problem. Sometimes they took 10+ vials of blood and that made me want to sit down for a few minutes but I never passed out. I don't like looking at the needle either.

I fainted when they were drawing blood for a blood test, once. But I have hypotension, so I just assumed it was from a drop in blood pressure.

I've never passed out but sometimes I get sick because I'm anemic.

I almost fainted once about 30 seconds after the vial was drawn. I think it must have a been a blood pressure drop or from not eating, because I've had plenty of blood taken without problems.

I use to get alot of shots when I was little so I never really had a fear of needles or blood. I have no problem with blood.

ive given blood plenty of times, but i only passed out once. i was racing somebody next to me to fill up the bag so i was losing blood faster than normal. apparently passing out is a DQ though.

I fell pretty hard on my knee at school years ago, used my blood to draw a nice picture on the wall and got into trouble for it when I got caught.

Sounds like you have a very low hemoglobin or RBC count or you're simply not eating healthy.. you should get yourself checked for anemia just in case.

Since your blood was coming out slow you're hypotensive, which is also a sign of anemia.

If you're not eating healthy, then you seriously lack nutrients in your diet, B12 and folate deficency usually cause pernicious anemia.

Your blood test result should tell you more...

I've never passed out when I've given blood. I just make sure to eat a decent meal a few hours before going in. And I always look at the needle, I'd rather know exactly when they're going to put it in.

People generally lose consciousness because of a lack of oxygen to the brain which during normal conditions is sent through the bloodstream to the brain. A deficit of iron in blood cells can also cause faintness. If an individual feels anxious from seeing a needle but there is no blood being drawn, they may have trypanophobia.

I don't pass out but I get quite woozy and light headed, just from the shear fear of the needle and so on. For me I don't know it's just seeing the needle mostly, but it's just the thought their going to have to suck blood out of me using it.

My diet is actually fairly healthy, however the last time I had blood drawn I was borderline anemic. So, that is possible.

I should probably get my blood pressure checked as well I guess. Hypotension would explain the blood coming out slow, unless she just sucked and missed my bulging vein somehow. I also had a medication change which has hypotension as a side effect as well. Hmm.

It's not necessarily a physiological thing. I'm in above-average health and totally not squeamish, but for whatever reason if I catch a look at the needle going in or a vial being filled I get light-headed to the verge of passing out. It's essentially a mild dissociation.

I am guessing thats the case as well. If that is the case then your doc will most probably prescribe you multi vitamins, since anemia has much more complications such as hair loss, fatigue etc... your test should tell you if you're anemic or not.

Make sure to tell your doc about your medication, you could be hypotensive or maybe just a little dehydrated.

He felt dizzy and looked pale which are physiological signs of not recieveing enough oxygen.

Yours is most probably a little nervousness and anxiety associated with the needle.

I've nearly passed out twice. Lack of balance, narrowing vision, and nausea. I have low MCH or MCV (something like that), basically means by red blood cells don't carry a lot of oxygen so when I get a lot of blood drawn, I can feel pretty **** Best thing to do is eat and get a lot of fluids in you before you get your blood drawn ...... closing your eyes may help as well.

Same thing happened to me when I had my blood drawn right after a long drive. I didn't have anything to drink during that drive so you can imagine it didn't go so well for me. Every other time was fine. I've seen some people have extreme reactions to getting their blood taken though and an explanation would be nice. The guy was donating blood just like me on the Big Red Bus and he was perfectly fine for the first five minutes. For some reason though, his eyes started rolling back and his entire body shook like crazy! Took about 3 minutes to calm his body down and the guy didn't even remember a thing. What the hell happened? Oh, I forgot to mention. Donated blood a month back by some new "Alice" procedure where they pump fresh platelets back into my blood stream after blood has been taken out. The stuff coming in felt so damn strange and made me uncomfortable.

Doesn't bother me, I've freaked nurses out before because I like to watch myself get stuck and drawn. Growing up my aunt was training to be a phlebotomist so my cousin and I got to be the Guinea pigs.
