Atleast thats what Jim Greer(R) thinks

-

WASHINGTON (CNN) – The chairman of the Republican Party of Florida on Tuesday issued a statement to "condemn President Obama's use of taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America's children to his socialist agenda."

Jim Greer also accused President Obama of "using our children as tools to spread liberal propaganda."

The state party chair issued the statement in response to a White House announcement that Obama would appear in a nationally broadcast address to primary school students around the country. The White House has said the president would be urging students to "(take) responsibility for their success in school."

"As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama's socialist ideology," Greer said.

The Department of Education has released documents that list suggested questions for students to consider during the speech, and activities that teachers can use to guide discussion afterward. Activities listed include creating posters outlining their personal and academic goals, and "(writing) letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president."

Anybody else find this somewhat ridiculous?

Obama is a socialist, but I mean the country is already a mess, I don't see how his "socialist ideology" is gonna make it any worse.

I find it ridiculous how people throw the word "socialism" around and then scare everyone else because they think that socialism is the worst thing that could happen to their country.

I think they are more concerened with this line... "(writing) letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president." republican or democrat...I don't want the state to get involved with telling children how they can serve it better in elementary school.....

Everything that Obama does is socialism according to the Republicans, even though I have my doubts on what some of them would define socialism as.

Long live the USSA!

Meh, not like our primary schools aren't already bastions of government propaganda. How many of us got it drilled into our heads during elementary school that the US is the best country ever, the founding fathers were all great chaps, George Washington was a god among men, and that all Americans should love the US because if you aren't patriot then you're a traitor.

I'm not arguing that at all...but when it can be defeated it should.....general Go America! Propoganda can be bad...but not nearly as bad as setting up allegiances to particular politicians and ideas.....

What this guy thinks is socialism because its like he is hinting that the government should be responsible for kids' education. If the kid doesn't want to get an education, thats his own damn fault and there's nothing you can do about it. Whoever works hard for their education are going to succeed a lot of times in life

You need to be more worldly. Compared to all of Western Europe, Obama actually looks slightly right-of-center. Obama isn't even a liberal.

Socialism actually includes a massive swath of political and economic systems. Socialism can be everything from Hitler's economci policies to those of current-day Scandinavia (which is supposed to be the best place to live in the entire world).

Writing letters about they can do to help the president? Uh...excuse me but the president shouldn't be involved in that. Wouldn't call it socialist though...indoctrination may be the better word.

despit your sig? lol :P

Anyway, I think it's ideal to have a market-based economy that's heavily regulated by a Federal Reserve style agency. What they've got in Europe is optimum.

Reminds me of last year when the Bamster bought up a 30 minute slot on all the major networks for a huge campaign commercial. Seriously creeped me out. I'm so sick of his face.

Besides the fact that it can not work.

Several social democratic governments exist around the world and have done relatively well for themselves. Norway and Sweden probably being good examples of such a thing.

Greer hyperbole aside, I really think President Obama is overstepping his bounds here. He may have a good and worthwhile message for the children of America. But using the platform of the public school system and his position as president to talk directly to the nation's children is inappropriate at best and a misuse of power at worst. This is a needless incursion by the executive branch and far outside the realm of duty for the President. Even if his motives are pure and well intentioned this sets a bad precedent going forward. We've seen numerous dictators utilize school systems to control the rising generation and create cults of personality. While this speach seems relatively harmless in itself it is still a bad step in the wrong direction; One that could be abused by a future president.

Indeed, they aren't, but Norway especially has quite the robust welfare system and state ownership in certain areas are very strong key areas like the petroleum sector. Quite socialistic compared to the third way approach of my own country. Though I doubt they'll stay like that for a long while.

In any case, sorry for the tangent I have caused.

Perhaps....but it doesn't mean socialism works if it's mixed. And that was the initial comment made by someone.

It seems that the definition of a liberal in North America is different than the definition in Europe.
I'm very sure most Americans think that all liberals are left winged.
Most republicans also seem to think that anything that is Obama's policy = socialism. Tis indeed very sad.

It appears that you are correct, but I don't think that socialism exists if not "mixed" in a market economy. Otherwise it seems to be to be pushing onto communism, that's a whole other debate though, I shall bow out here.

This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the U.S. Department of Energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by a municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC-regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like, using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of U.S. Department of Agriculture-inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. At the appropriate time, as regulated by the U.S. Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the U.S. Naval Observatory, I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration-approved automobile and set out to work on the roads build by the local, state, and federal Departments of Transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve Bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the U.S. Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school. After spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health administration, enjoying another two meals which again do not kill me because of the USDA, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to my house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and Fire Marshal's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police department. And then I log on to the internet -- which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration -- and post on Freerepublic.com and Fox News forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right.
